Advantages Advantages Nice level design, stylish presentation, bullet-time concept, weapons, story

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some tricky sections, horrible slow-down at times, unskippable cut-scenes, short

Flashback to 2001, less than a year after the launch of the PlayStation2 and a crucial time in determining how successful Sony's next-generation console may ultimately become. But Sony had a bit of a problem on their hands, and it lay in the shoot 'em up genre. Blasters had for a long-time been a favourite amongst gamers, but despite solid PC-ports of older classics Unreal Tournament and Quake III, the PS2 still didn't really have a shoot 'em up to turn heads and shift consoles - would Max Payne come to Sony's rescue? Rescue is perhaps too strong a word, though Max Payne certainly had the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Innovitive gameplay

Disadvantages Disadvantages a bit repetitive to begin with

I think it’s safe to say that Max Payne is one of the most atmospheric games I’ve ever played. Set in a cold, dark and rather grim world Max Payne employs a whole new approach to gaming. This isn’t just your average shooter, this is a game that you’ll never forget and that’s a guarantee. Max Payne is essentially story based although the gameplay is nothing short of revolutionary. The game starts with Max standing on top of a skyscraper holding a sniper rifle and looking rather pleased with himself. At first you think; what's going on here then. Then you realise ... more

Advantages Advantages GOOD FUN MESSING AROUND, GOOD RANGE OF WEAPONS

Disadvantages Disadvantages SHORT GAME, VERY POOR CONTROLS

If you are an avid game player who will buy games and complete them in a few days you are just like me. So now I rent games and pay the extra pound so that I get an extra day of play, that’s if I need it. Graphics This is a great game with equally impressive graphics. As you may have seen in other games there are very in depth colours and details on walls, some may say over the top and not needed. Max Payne adds just enough background detail to class it as more realistic than other games. There are things like a simple poster or a phone box in rooms or outside unlike other games that ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages controls slightly tricky at first

Max Payne is a now classic PS2 game that plays as a third-person shooter and is one of my favourite console games of all time. Recently made into a film starring Mark Walbherg to very mixed reviews, the game sees you playing the part of a cop who returns home to discover his wife and child brutally killed by junkies in what is essentially a flashback and preliminary level of the game. Following his family's death, he transfers to the DEA and goes undercover in order to prosecute the people responsible for the manufacture and distribution of the drugs that created his wife and child's killers ... more

Advantages Advantages Good gameplay, original concepts

Disadvantages Disadvantages too easy, repetitive at times

Max Payne is certainly a very unique game with lots of unique characteristics. The game is centered around a man trying to uncover a bent police and mafia operation who have killed his wife and child. The storyline aspect keeps you interested in what the whole point of the game is and allows for certain characters to be introduced. Certain aspects of the game such as the bullet dodge and the sound effects give the game a real edge at times which can become very intense and gripping. However the game was all too easy, fairly long but levels can be sped through and some parts are just ... more

Advantages Advantages Like being in a john Woo film

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes difficult to control

Ill start with the bad points first, firstly the control system can be a little difficult, movements sometimes feeling a little unatural. the story line is very linear you have to go the way they decide which in buildings is not so bad but once out dors it is a lot more noticable. There are certain dream sequence levels which seriously irtate you and at some points make you want to stop playing, these levels can also be a little disturbing especially the one where the soundtrack is of a baby constantly crying. Good points the storyline for this game is superb and it plays out just like a film ... more

Advantages Advantages easy , not alot of problem solving.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages a short game.

When I first started the game I was shocked how good it was.I mean it had a huge arsenal of weaponary like handguns,Machine guns like Uzis and such.I really liked the shotgun and the granade luncher. One of the features of this game was the slo-motion mode where you could DODGE BULLETTS !!! Honestly if you havn't played this your missing out on alot of fun. I could not stop playing this game and I loved the whole storyline: Max has to revenge his wife and son so he sets off on a one-men war. The only bad thing about this game was that it finished earlyer than I expected. But it has about 4 ... more

    Advantages Advantages great game

Disadvantages Disadvantages if only there was more levels! there's loads anyway!

Really enjoyable game and I was able to complete it in a weekend, because it was so addictive and wanted to find out what happens! The story line is great and brings a new way of playing console games. It is action packed and keeps you wanting more. The graphics are great. It’s one them games that you can work through it without getting stuck on one part that ends up so frustrating that you put the game away and never play it again. (the last level is great, took a little while to work out what to do, but is very satisfying once you’ve done it) I had seen the great reviews this game had ... more

Advantages Advantages A darkly funny plot with original gameplay

Disadvantages Disadvantages Run, shoot. Run, shoot. Run, shoot. Gets a bit boring in the end.

Don't get me wrong, Max Payne is an amazing game. The graphics are sharp with a hint of gritty realism. The sound is cool from the gravelly voiced Max to the throaty roar of the shotguns. And to cap it all the game has a killer plot. Plot is an underrated quality in computer games wether it be the rambling twaddle of the Final Fantasy series or the sport sims which invariably have none. A good plot can draw you into even the most clumsy of games and compell you to persevere. Max Payne's seemingly endless routine of run and kill, run and kill is helped by the clever use of bullet time (ah la ... more
