They should recover your data also Free of Charge 17/11/2009

Advantages backs up all your familly stuff
Disadvantages If it breaks you maybe can lose all your memories or it will cost you

I bought one of these recently to put all my familly Data , Photo's Video's etc on, thought great if my PC needs re-formatting i can have peace of mind that all my treasured memories are safe. That was until a week ago "Maxtor" has now changed its name to "Seagate" well one minute the external harddrive was ok next the green light was flashing i have bene told its an electrical fault. Here's my problem i have i took it back to argos and they said they would be happy to replace or re-fund the product onto a voucher as its still under guarentee but they would not and cannot do anything about the ... more

Maxtor 500GB EXTERNAL 24/07/2008

Advantages Maximizes the amount of data vs the cost of the product
Disadvantages heat issues, cord connectivity, and small installation problems.

Some people call me ignorant for using Maxtor, but I honestly only order Maxtor for my hard drives. Now the only downside to the Maxtor 500 GB is that it is an external drive that, if not careful, can overheat and cause connectivity problems, transfer speed issues, or just annoyance from when the usb gets knocked out. That being said, if you can get past the downside of have an external I would recommend this product to anyone not using a Mac. The only reason I do not recommend this to Mac owners is because Mac is the only type of computer that I myself will not touch. I have filled this thing ... more

Advantages Simple design, technically up to date,
Disadvantages Could have 5 years of warranty

I bought it 3 days ago for a quite reasonable price in Argos-60ł(+2GB usb stick free). I did not experienced the overheating issues. I was copying 250GB data from an internal drive for more than 2 hours. At the end the internal drive was really hot but the maxtor was just warm. Luckily I did not go for the more expensive brother (onetouch 4) for further details read CNET reviews I think as it is an external drive it should NOT be on constantly, I generally eject the hardware from th pc and it simply turns itself off (completely) ... more

Good for small data chunks 14/07/2009

Advantages Fast when copy 4 - 5 GB of data at a time
Disadvantages Heating and crashes

I bought this hard drive couple of weeks back to replace my 80 GB hard drive. It is alot cheaper than other brands and gives a lot of extra space to copy your data. This product is amazingly fast when you copy small chunks of data (about 4 to 5 gb). It is very fast. But when you copy huge data, it heats up and crashes. I was copying over 70 GB of data from my old hard drive and I was unable to do it. I failed several time but when i did it in small chunks, it was fast and easy and infact it took less time then copying all that data in a single attempt.
