The Personal Storage line of external hard drives comes from Maxtor, who were acquired by Seagate last year. As a subsidiary of Seagate, Maxtor is currently the world's third-largest manufacturer of hard disks. What does this mean to the consumer? It means that you're getting a high-quality product supported by a top world leader in computer storage. The Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 is a perfect example of why the Maxtor product line is so popular. Storage with the Maxtor is as simple as it can get - you will be copying files and folders to this drive within minutes of getting it out of ... more

    Advantages Advantages Fast and reliable

Disadvantages Disadvantages Automatic spin-down can be annoying

This hard drive has many things over other drives on the market. Firstly, being made by Maxtor you would be expecting something special. And I can happily say that it does outclass many of the other drives out there. It is a 7200rpm drive, and so file transfers are as quick as on an internal hard disk. While I'm on the topic of performance, there is one little issue. The drive will power itself down after a period of inactivity, which is great if you like to save energy, and probably good for the lifespan of the drive, but upon accessing the powered down drive, you'll need to wait for it to ... more

Advantages Advantages When working - Fast, convenient, massive capacity.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not reliable

Started off very well. Plug and play as promised, via USB. Very easy to use, quick access : very simple to create folders and upload all those things you want to backup (you do keep backups, don't you?!). So on went all my MP3s, pictures, software, in case of a disk crash on my PC No problems for the first 8 months. Then it stopped working. Looked like it just wouldn't power up (green light only faintly flickered). Try to take back to shop under 1 year limited warranty, but would only offer replacement with NO data transfer. The word 'limited' is the key here. Overall very dissatisfied. A so ... more

1 Star Quick review of Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 500 GB by Strangeness 26/09/2008
Take a look at the Seagate forums for the dozens of people with problems with these drives. They tend to need to be powered up separately to the computer on every reboot or the drive is not recognised and wishes to be reformatted. Garbage .. avoid it and all the Maxtor Basics line up. Seagate will ignore complaints about it.
