SMILE!!!!!!! *** History ***** "Chips glorious Chips!!!!" ( I know your sining the song from the advert now ) The McCain business started way back in 1957 in Canada with a small work force of 30 people. There products didn't hit the British market till 1965. It was throughout the 1970's that the company spread itself out and set up factories in Scarborough (72), Netherland (73), Australia (75) and from then on till the present date they have expanded there factories. The McCain business also has factories for different types of foods they produce, potato factories and Pizza factories. Today ... more

My son at the moment is a very fussy eater and refuses to eat any sort of potato, but the one thing he does love is McCain Smiles. Packaging On the front of the red plastic packaging is a picture of a sunflower, when you look closely you can see that it is actually sunflower petals and in the middle is a smile which I think is very clever! When I took the smiles out of the bag they looked very pale in colour, they are round with of course a smiley face, there are holes for the eyes and a big smiley mouth. Cooking Instructions You can either grill or oven cook the smiles, I use the oven at gas ... more

I've been eating these McCain Smiles every since I can remember an till this day I still love them. These smiles are potato and shapes like smiley faces . The smiles have a crispy coating and the potato in the centre is soft when cooked. They are about 1.5-2 inches long and about 1 centimetre thick. -------Taste,Smell,Quality-------- These potato smiley's taste very much like chips just in a different shape and these have a slightly crispier coating than oven chips. They have a very soft potato centre with a crispy coating. I like when they cooked slightly over the recommended time of 12-15 ... more

Advantages Advantages Fun and exciting potatoes, quick to cook

Disadvantages Disadvantages May be a little to childish for grown ups although I don't care!

One of every child's favourite potatoes have to be McCain's Smiles. The smiley faces were always my favourites to accompany any meal and, even though I don't eat them very often now I'm all grown up, I do occasionally get pulled back to my youth and chuck a pack in my shopping trolley. Smiles come in a red plastic 454g bag packaging with a picture of one of the smiles on the front looking rather happy surrounded by sunflower petals. A bag usually costs around £1.30 but I often see them on special offer in Asda and Iceland for only £1. Smiles are a frozen potato product made from fluffy mashed ... more

Advantages Advantages taste nice, good for kids

    Disadvantages Disadvantages a bit expensive

What are they? McCain smiles are a frozen potato product aimed at children. They are basically mashed poato made into the shape of a smiley face, and I think they are meant to be a fun alternative to chips. The description the packet gives is as follows 'McCain smiles are bite sized fun faces made from fresh mashed poato. You're guaranteed smiles all round!' Price These cost £1.09 for a 454g bag at my local Bell's store. Personally I think that's expensive, but I got them on a buy one get one free offer, which I think makes them slightly better value for money. I have since seen them in ASDA ... more

So, after the dissapointment of the Asda stars version of these (see earlier review), I wanted to replace the horrible memory with the warm and fun one from when I was little, so when I came home for the holdiays and found my sister had bought some of these, I jumped at them! These are little (about 2 inches in diameter) round circles of mashed potato covered in a breadcrumb sort of coating which goes crispy when you cook it. And every circle has a little smile and 2 eyes punched out of them. I cooked mine in the oven because it's healthier however you can also fry these. In the oven they only ... more

Advantages Advantages fun, taste great and really do put a smile on your face

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none.

McCains make a great range of products and one that's a very big hit with my daughter is the smiles. These cute 2 inch smiley faces are a great fun way for your children to eat good food. I picked these up from my local Tesco when they were on offer for only £1. They are usually priced at around the £1.50 mark. Each packet contains 454grams which works out to be around 30 faces. This is great at 3 or 4 is more than enough to add to a meal. So a packet will last you for ages! These smiles last for ages, being a freezer food they aren't something that will go out of date any time soon which is ... more

Who cares if this product was designed for kids, as I love these. You can buy these in 454g bags and they cost approx £1.20. They are made by mcCain's What are they? They are mashed potato's with a golden crispy outside and they are round and have a face on the front. Since they have the face on it, the 2 circular eyes and smiley mouth are holes in the circle. The bag is a bright red and has a big yellow sunflower on the front and a picture of the item in the centre of the sunflower. The reason there is a sunflower on the front is because they are made with 100% sunflower oil. This product is ... more

Advantages Advantages Soft on the inside, slightly crisp on the outside, delicious potato taste

Disadvantages Disadvantages Requires fairly careful grilling

McCain have been producing chips and potato products for a long time now and have become extremely popular. Smiles are simply potato made into smiley faces :o) I love these because sometimes usual chips can lie a bit heavily in my stomach and these are quite light and fluffy, and cheer you up when you look at them smiling back at you on your plate. The new 'bigger' bag of smiles is 600g and costs £1.56 in Tesco. A portion is roughly 75g/6 smiles, which may not sound like much but they're a decent size. Each portion contains 231 calories and 9.8g fat, so as far as chips go they're not too bad ... more

Although we normally have Chips in our house, the occassional Wedges, and sometimes Curly Fries, the wife likes to buy things like these. PErhaps she's a big kid, but she likes Potato products. I admit i'm not that fussed about "novelty" things like this, but I had a couple the other week and I have to say these were pretty nice. You get these in the freezer and they cost about £1 a bag. The bag size is 750g and to look in here it doesn't look like you get many for the money. They are quite large though, so I would say you get 2 generous portions out of this bag, or I would say 3 more standard ... more
