Advantages: A powerful 'wee heavy'
Disadvantages: None, if drunk properly
...I was practically weaned on McEwan's beer and let me tell you, McEwan's cask conditioned 80/- is probably the best beer in the world...forget what Carlsberg say in their ads!
Of course this opinion is about McEwan's Export Ale. And, by a strange co-incidence, this is an ale brewed mainly for export. It is not a widely popular ale in Scotland. Fowler's Wee Heavy would be the most popular in this style.

A Good Wee Heavy from Scotland

Advantages: Full Bodied. Nice rich dark colour
Disadvantages: Does not have youthful image
...producing very good barley. McEwan's Scotch Ale is a splendid example of the Scottish brewing tradition and has a real kick to it,as you would expect from a beer whse alcohol by volume content (ABV) is a hefty 8 %. This is a fine beer to consume on a cold winter evening.It is available in 500 ml cans and in bottles.
McEwans goes well with hearty food. Try it with a good filling Scotch Broth, a Cock'a Leekie, or a traditional Stew or Casserole. ...

Disadvantages: Can dispel prospective partners at much closer quarters.
...to me -
1. Should McEwan's really be categorised under Bitter?
and
2. Doesn't it seem to you that the majority of opinions on alcoholic beverages are positive, and are they being viewed through beer goggles?

Advantages: Tastes of the old times.
Disadvantages: Tastes of the old times.
Heavy has been in decline for twenty years now,
as advertising weens its way into our "drink selection conciousness"
and a new generation of drinkers demand trendy, bottled, foreign lagers served at 10 deg.C, with poor, bland flavour; close to water even, allowing themselves to get pissed while looking trendy.
McEwans Export, hardly the brewery's flagship ale anymore, gets very little TV or pub poster coverage anymore and has therefore slipped ...
