Total War Games ----------------------------- For those of you that don't know I'll do a little explaining about the Total War games. Total War is a hugely successful series of war games by the Creative Assembly. Their first game was released in 1999/2000 (depending on where in the world you live), it was called: -- Shogun:Total War -- Shogun: Total War and was set in the turmoil that was 16th Century Japan and it pretty much revolutionised war games as we knew them over night with it's fantastic mix of real-time battles, diplomacy, conquest and economy building. The follow up to Shogun was ... more

Advantages Advantages Solid gameplay with interesting features, brilliant graphics and cinematics.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Little original content compared to previous game, AI not great.

'Medieval 2: Total War' is a PC game that came out in 2006, as part of the successful strategy series, 'Total War', by developers Creative Assembly. This game is essentially a remake of 'Medieval: Total War', the second game in the series, but updated with the game engine used in 'Rome: Total War' (which I have previously reviewed and enjoyed a lot, along with the original 'Medieval'). As with the other titles, 'Medieval 2' combines a hybrid style of gameplay with a 'Risk'-style, turn-based campaign where you conquer the known map with your military prowess and real-time battle scenes that pit ... more

    Advantages Advantages Excellent addictive game

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some new aditions useless

After becoming totally adicted to this series back with the original 'Medieval Total War' (MTW), and only feeding this love with 'Rome Total War' (RTW) the run up to Christmas and this game was a frustrating time for me, although I can now say it was well worth it. The game follows the style and standards set by the earlier games. You are given control of a faction living within the time period and the long term aim is to expand your borders and become the dominant power in the world. The methods of achieving this vary from faction to faction and player to player and this is what makes the ... more

Advantages Advantages Brilliant concept & graphics, good gameplay

Disadvantages Disadvantages Many pointless and inexcusable problems

When looking at other reviews of this game, I was somewhat surprised to see how everyone seems to think it's so fantastic. Don't get me wrong - Medieval 2 is good, but considering how good it could potentially be... But firstly, some basics. If you don't already know about the Total War series, you've really missed out on some great games. What they (at least aim to) do is combine the realism and depth of games like Civilisation with the fast-paced action of RTS games like Command & Conquer - it's a sound principle, giving you control over what happens in your battles and of the greater ... more

Advantages Advantages Graphiccally stunning (provided you have a powerful pc) and plenty of replay value

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too similar to the earlier games and not as challenging

As the latest game in the Total War Series, medieval: Total War II has a tough act to follow. This time the game is set in Medieval Europe, just after the Norman Invasion of England, and at the time of the crusades. The Total War franchise is a known quantity, and you generally understand what you are going to receive. The pedigree of the series is very good, with a good blend of strategic management and tactical conflict. First, the good points. If you have sufficiently powerful pc, the graphics are awesome. The detail and the effects are excellent, when the settings are ramped up to full ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Graphics, Gameplay and Freedom.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Takes up a lot of memory, sometimes too easy

The Gold Editions includes the 2 most recent instalments of the Total War franchise. Medieval II Total War and Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms. Based in and around Europe from 1080 and 1530, you have the chance to take control of a mediocre faction and turn it into the greatest faction of their time. For all those who have played on Rome Total War you can expect very similar gameplay, so you needn't worry about having to learn something completely new. But for all those who haven't there is the option to leave 'advice' on, so you will both learn how to play the game aswell as picking up hints ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages In game bugs and flaws make you lose patience

Those already familiar with Creative Assembly and their award winning trilogy of RTS dominating games: Shogun:Total War, Medieval: Total War & the critically acclaimed Rome:Total War, will not be dissapointed by this revisited time scale in history. During the Medieval period, the world was experiencing ground breaking advancements in technology, sciences and empire building. With many kingdoms vying to stretch their borders to enviable distances, the stage is set for an inevitable showdown of the worlds largest and brutal armies pitting their strengths against one another. The choice for ... more

Advantages Advantages Immense graphics and gameplay

Disadvantages Disadvantages Requires a very fast computer

The first game in the total war series brought a new age to strategy gaming. Shogun total war brought a new level of strategy gaming to the computer world. The graphics were shoddy and the game play was full of glitches but none the less it showed the world the true capability of computer programmers. Several years later, and after thousands of technilogical advances, the total war team bring us this new far improved world. Medieval Total War 2 focuses on the european medieval world. An age full of war, fear and destruction. The likes of which have never been seen in a game. The game provides ... more

Advantages Advantages Deep, Immersive, Polished, Excellent replay value, Historically accurate, Good value

Disadvantages Disadvantages Difficult to begin with, demanding system requirements

The Total War series provides a unique genre in the strategy gaming scene, with its dynamic blend of turn-based campaigning and real time 3D battles. Of the six existing titles, Medieval 2 remains by far the best and the greatest value for money, for its range of features, graphics, immersive nature and durability. Medieval 2 builds on what already made Rome: Total War a classic - the ability to support thousands of 3D soldiers on screen, a rich, deep, 3D campaign map, multiple playable factions in an epic campaign across Europe, a complex technology tree and varied weapon types, and excellent ... more
