    I remember the days when visiting an internet chatroom was about the geekiest thing you could possibly do, short of going to a Games Workshop in a Red Dwarf T-shirt clutching a copy of The Legend of the Lord Wizard of Zarquathor Part IX.     I have been using the internet chat rooms for years and years now. I remember the first time I ever entered a chat room, I was absolutely terrified of making a complete plonker of myself and I spent what seemed like forever on the outskirts of everyone's conversations. Back then I think most people were as nervous as myself, apart from the odd one or two who thought they were the dog's wotsits.     Internet chat rooms… are they the places people surf to, to make an online community of friends or are they an easy way to meet your next one nightstand???     If anyone had told us twenty years ago that in order to use a computer, we would have to learn a completely new language, do you really think we would all be sitting at home using computers...the answer is probably not.... However, somewhere along the way, after the days of ms dos, hated by all of us who had to use it, a completely new language emerged.     The Internet is a very exciting place to be, with endless possibilities to explore. A very small part of the internet are those rooms where hours and hours of fun can be spent, flirting and chatting with different people. When I first started using the Internet 4 years ago, it was the most amazing thing to have all this information at my fingertips.     I have been in some chat rooms and very seldom go in anymore unless I know the group and it is a chat room set up for writers or other things of interest to me or where I already know some people. To me you get in a chat room and there are so many people talking it is hard to keep track of who is taking to who and things go shooting by so fast you have to type your fingers off to keep up. I prefer e-mail chats, or the regular chat services such as yahoo messenger, msn, aol or icq. Each have there own features some more than others.     The press seem to condemn them. TV soaps have used them as a subject to improve storylines. I hear friends who totally refute them. They’re called CHATROOMS Following a rather heated debate with people who I will leave nameless on this occasion, I decided it was about time to try and put a little bit of perspective, and hopefully enlightenment on the computerised taboo subject of chatrooms.     "They" really can find out who you are. If you are using chatrooms, be very careful and very aware of the realities of the internet. Firstly, you can be traced. Ok, so you are in a chatroom with an anonymous email address and a fancy nickname haveing a bit of fun with someone you will never hear from again. It ain't necessarily so. How do you know that the other chatter hasn't set up the room just to trace people. If so, then they could find your IP address.
