Advantages: Good for talking obviously Disadvantages: We are still not sure whether it causes cancer but there is a high chance that it does.
What is it all about then?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The controversy involving the use of mobile phones may affect our lives in the days to come. The questions we should be asking ourselves should be “are we in any eminent danger”? In 1999, the U. S Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a statement, which is as follows: “The scientific evidence does not allows us to conclude that mobile phones are absolutely safe… ... ...of research that FDA has conducted, they still have not come up with anything concrete.
The first lawsuit against a mobile phone manufacturer was in 1992, when the wife of a man had died of a brain tumour. Sales have rocketed since then to an estimated 300 million users worldwide.
Last year, the FDA decided to look for more answers. They launched a new study in collaboration with the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), to find ...
The 'Daily Telegraph' produced an article that supports this opinon!
==========================
Apparently rail commuters are at high risk from mobile phone radiation (from voice, texting and internet accessing) which is approaching DANGER LEVELS due to signals bouncing around inside carriages.
==========================
The whole population seems to be using cell phones, well it seems that ... ...problems with using the cell phone I ask myself? More and more scientists are studying cordless and cell-phones for the resultant problems people may encounter when using them. The phone does not have to be against your head to present a health issue. Even on standby, clipped to your belt or clothing, the radiation can penetrate your body.
Having carried out a little research in the subject an example of one such program claims that the radiation ...
I don't really know much about the radiation that mobile phones irradiate, but I don't think that many people REALLY do. I think that no where near enough research has been done to draw valid conclusions. As a scientist, you need some pretty conclusive proof one way or the other, and from what I have seen, there is evidence for and against the case, making it difficult to decide one way or the other.
Sure, mobile phones are probably bad for your ... ...by a bus! Sorry to be a pessimist, but one day, something is going to kill you. It is conclusive that smoking causes cancer and adds to coronary heart disease, but most smokers do not really bother. If they do, they will stop smoking altogether. I think that the public on the whole would rather use phones for their convenience, than worry about the potential problems to their health 20 or 30 years down the line. I am one such people, because it seems ...
Advantages: Latest status on mobile phones and health Disadvantages: still doesn't have the full facts (but is the best source as we can get)
The Carphone Warehouse is currently the only UK site (I can find) which carries a wealth of health information relating to mobile phones.
There are other sources of radation figures from (already mentioned in opinions from ciao):
http://www.cellular.co.za/health/radiation_gsm_phone_a-to-z.htm
and another source from CNET:
The Carphone Warehouse guide is quite impartial (considering this is ... ...and is very comprehensive. But the article is quite tricky to find on the site, and is not displayed that prominently, but it is there.
The main categories are:
Current Guidelines
-Basically the latest guidelines are set by the UK's
National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) and International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)
Both NRPB and ICNRP guidelines incorporate basic restrictions on the Specific Energy Absorption ...
The question of mobile phone safety is going to continue for a long time yet, mainly because no-one knows whether there is a health risk associated with them, or whether they are perfectly safe to use. We have come a long way down the road as to studies into mobile phone safety, and yet most people are none the wiser as to the risks involved. I will hold my hands up straightaway that I have my own mobile phone. I have a mobile for a reason though, ... ...need to have a contact number for people to get hold of me when I am out on jobs or I happen to be out of the office. My business would be cost a lot of money if I didn't have one. It isn't this that I worry about though. There is a big need for the use of mobiles for people like myself with their own businesses, and also no doubt other needs. However I find it disturbing when I see 9 and 10 year old children using mobile phones. It is believed to ...
Being a Teenager myself i know that many people have mobile phones, i have one myself and so do many of my friends. and aspect of the health risks which is not usually brought up is that of how the radiation could affect an adolescent's health. could this radiation damge me? or my younger sister? do i use my mobile enough for there to be a problem. the main thing that bothers me is that even if there isnt a risk (as many people are now saying) i ... ...my mobile phone.
I think that the companies who sell mobile phones should distribute warnings with mobile phones at least saying that the risks are unknown. even if it is found that there are no risks at all it is better to be safe than sorry, and research into this should definatly be continued to find out exactly what the risks are. ...
Advantages: Convenient, cheap, Disadvantages: Poor signal, slight health risk,
Mobile phones like most things in life carry a very small risk. In their case, it is radiation. This risk has to be weighed against the benefits of using mobile phones. As long as each user has the relevant information, they can decide themselves if the "risk" is worth taking. The risk increases depending upon just how much you use the phone. If the industry can think of ways of reducing the risk, then these improvements should be made but it will ...
Advantages: No real conclusive evidence of danger for moderate use Disadvantages: Possibility that heavy use is dangerous
I've yet to hear any convincing evidence proving that mobile phones emit dangerous levels of radiation.
Certainly, we've heard some reports saying there are dangers and some saying they are safe. If there was a convincing body of evidence there would be a consensus amongst the 'experts'. As it stands the findings we've heard so far do suggest that there is a possibility that mobile phone use can be harmful and that further studies should be conducted. ... ...by the hype created by the media, rather than the findings themselves.
At present the best advice I've heard is to limit your use of mobile phones to less than 10 hours per week. If studies can't prove definitively whether heavy mobile phone use is dangerous then surely moderate use must be safe. ...
Advantages: no problems whatsoever Disadvantages: none
I think there will prove to be no problems with radiation from proximaty to mobile phones. It is the common for the public to become worried about such problems. The only health risk possible from mobile phone radiation is the chance that you may get a radiation BURN from the aerial on your phone. This will only happen if the aerial is taken off and the metal piece revealed during a call, or perhaps if the aerial is faulty. The newest mobile phones ...
Advantages: Use a hnads-free headset Disadvantages: don't spend all day with the phone to an ear
I have to say that I think the jury is still out on this topic. THe serious contradictions one sees in the media simply make the decisions even more confusing.
However, taking simple precautions should not be ignored - I do believe that the use of hands-free headsets should be encouraged, if only because they are convenient and mean that your phone can be kept out of sight from the opportunist thief in crowded areas. I also consider that their use ... ...and a deadly instrument together is hardly sensible.
I suppose the chances are if one spends all day with one of the phones glued to an ear, the chances are you are not doing yourself any good - but the Govt and the companies need to get their act together and come up with a coherent statement after properly conducted study ...
...proven'. As a former member of the Armed Forces who instructed in Radio Communications, I KNOW that the majority of the disclaimers are hog wash. Why if it is safe to use these pieces of equipment are the relays aerials so heavily fenced in? Why is it so difficult to obtain information at a local level? Try explaining to local schools etc who are blinded by the offer of cash when a company wants to erect a mast that they are putting their pupils ... ...approve the erection of a mast in the grounds of a local school. The location of the aerials themselves would have placed the radiation pattern directly in line with an important footbridge over a major road. The net result of this plan (had it been approved) would have been to directly aim microwaves at the genitals of every user of the footbridge. The school and the local council claimed that this was scare mongering. However, the plan mysteriously ...
I'm not a mobile phone user on any regular basis but like everyone else I'm constantly in the proximity of those who are. All the experts tend to suggest that cellular radiation is only a problem to the phone user and even then only if the equipment is held too close but wasn't the same type of opinion being ventured about the dangers of lung cancer to smokers decades ago? Passive smoking has only been recognised in comparatively recent times but ...
Advantages: Useful for emergency contact Disadvantages: Usage cand become banal and excessive
As a Physicist I was always uneasy about the prospect of placing a source of microwave radiation next to my skull. My misgivings were amplified by the splendid public relations gaffe by one of the mobile phone companies, when many years ago one of their PR persons said:
"There is no danger to health posed by the usage of mobile phones... and anyway, the radiation from them is very low...".
The fact that they had obviously been measuring the emissions, ... ...to worry, and I decided against buying one.
No one will know the full efects of over-usage for several years yet - we still don't know how many people will die from new variant CJD as a result of the BSE crisis. The Australian melomania epidemic has surfaced 20 years after the "cult of the Australian sun tan".
Mobile phones are a useful technology, but should be used sparingly until the full effect is know. Use a landline if you can. ...
