Advantages Advantages Children learn to express themselves freely through creative play

Disadvantages Disadvantages You will have to help clean up

Children learn through playChildren of all ages get bored quickly. Creative play allows them to use their imagination and express themselves freely. You don't need to fill your house with expensive toys to entertain your children. Especially since children's toys seem to be getting more expensive. Children often have more fun with household items, as these are interesting and new to them. Here are some ideas for inexpensive activities: Here are a few things that he likes to do: • Look in the mirror • Play boo • Play with cardboard tubes • Different textured materials • Drawing with wax crayons ... more

Having just planned and managed a six week holiday club for children aged 4-11 years old I thought now would be a good time to record and share the activities which are simplest to prepare and implement and provide some very good entertainment!! ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ SLIME ~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ~*~*~*~*~*~ The following is a recipe to make a washing up bowl full of "slime". Children love it although for some it can take a bit of reassurance to get them to put their hands in it at first as it does look pretty gross!! I have made this for children aged 3 to 14 and they have all loved playing ... more

Advantages Advantages Life-long enjoyment, opens so many doors socially, creative, constructive

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost, discomfort when parents have headaches!

Neither my husband or I are musical. Neither of us were accepted into our school choirs. We both gave up learning the piano after a year or so in our teens, when younger brothers were clearly more talented. We enjoy listening to music, but that's about as far as it goes. When our two children were small, and I talked to parents of musical teenagers, I tended to assume their children showed clear musicality when they were toddlers; hearing about their concerts and practices seemed more like an episode from a soap than a reality we might one day appreciate ourselves. • Our personal experience • ... more

Just over a year ago I filled my days with work and not much else, then our much awaited daughter arrived and changed our lives completely. From the day she was born my life was filled with nappies, food and baby sick, now she has reached a year old and is toddling everywhere, so what do we do with our days now? I am lucky enough to be a full time mum, on the flipside I have plenty of hours to fill with activities that are fun and stimulating, here are some ideas that are great for filling those waking hours, most of them are practically free so you won't be bankrupted! Advantages Advantages Creative fun for your budding artists | Recycle some of that packaging

Disadvantages Disadvantages This WILL get messy

As winter is drawing in and we finding ourselves stuck indoors more and more often as the rain falls outside, my family finds itself partaking in more and more creative activities. And I thought I'd share a few of our favourite projects with you, some of the activities can be produced by the children on their own, others will need lots of adult help. Some of them take a little preparation, some a lot, most use common items you'll find in your kitchen cupboards, but what they all have in common is that they are fun, messy and you child may even be learning something. Before you start any of ... more

Advantages Advantages fun for me too

Disadvantages Disadvantages none I love spending time with my daughter

So many people (not all) spend the early years of parenthood doing the normal things such as the shopping and the odd coffee with friends then spend so much time in the house, but times have now changed. When pregnant with my daughter I made a vow not to be stuck in the house day in day out and spent my pregnancy looking for places that I could go with my little one. I did not start college until my daughter was four months old so needed something to keep me sane away from the four walls of the house. Some of the mother and toddler groups prefer the children to be at least 1 before taking them ... more

Advantages Advantages The smell from the shop brought variety!

Disadvantages Disadvantages No nice smell from the home-made dough, but at least it is cheap!

Sunday saw me in Oxford eating a late lunch of Pizza with other members of the Friendly Opinion Writers. Viki (Karenuk’s daughter) was given a Play-Doh kit (play dough). Well, being a big kid at heart, I too asked for some. I really did not expect to get given any, but Andy (our waiter) took pity on me and hay presto a pack arrived. Now, challenges are the order of the day, when you are in a group like this and not to be left out Wigggly Pufff set me the challenge to write an opinion on Play-Doh. There is no specific category for this product on Ciao, but I feel that it ideal in the ... more

Advantages Advantages For children who like to ride, equestrian camp is fun

Disadvantages Disadvantages Your child may pester you for a pony

My daughter is at summer camp - that traditional American dumping ground for children during the long summer holidays. But she's not at any old camp. She's at an equestrian summer camp in Pennsylvania. Not bad, considering we live in England. Yes, England - as in across that big bit of water. OK, OK, the commute only had to be done once - my daughter flew out to the US in July as an unaccompanied minor (and yes, I've written about that too); we join her in the States next week. This is the fourth year she's been. Every year, they have an end-of-camp horse (well...what else?) show. Boy, did I ... more

This is an article I’ve written for a parenting magazine. It hasn’t yet been published so I’d be interested in your comments, and any advice would be gratefully received. You’ve done it! You’ve given birth and your baby is thriving in his home environment. Your days are settling down and now you want to help your child’s social and physical development. If you are a first time mum it is also important that you build up a support network of other mums with young children. It is very easy to become isolated as your partner and friends continue with their ... more
