Excellent Reference Books

Advantages: Detailed, informative, excellent reference books
Disadvantages: Costly at £35 - £ 40

I can highly recommend the BIBLE series of computer reference books. I own 3: Dreamweaver 2 Bible, Access 97 Bible and Windows 98 Bible. They are all in daily use and are invaluable to me as reference tools. They are normally around the £40 ($50) price but are undoubtedly excellent value for money. Each book usually comes with a CD packed with tutorials, help files, examples and other useful programs. As a learning aid to programs they are brilliant ...

Administering Groupwise

Advantages: goes deep into the heart of the system
Disadvantages: you need some knowledge going in

I am a GroupWise Administrator for a large system and needed a book to go deeper into the system. In "Administering GroupWise" I found a book that explains in terms I could understand how it all fits together and gives a number of walkthroughs for common tasks. The book is written by Howard Tayler, Tay Kratzer & Ross Phillips and is pubished by McGraw-hill. The sections cover installation, settings and troubleshooting a system and give suggestions ...
...scratch. it gives a good overview of message flow so you can trace messages through the system to track any problems you encounter. Also it explains the logs (Thanks god as they needed explaining). I think this is the best book available at present on Groupwise and recoomend it greatly. It has alraedy become a first port of call for me when i need info. ...

Perl & CGI for the WWW - A Visual Quickstart Guide

Advantages: Easy, simple explanations
Disadvantages: Sometimes unclear where the author is coming from

This book was leant to me from a friend in school, who had already read it and knew the basics. It's an introduction to perl for programming on the internet. It's very entry level and I managed to get through the first 6 chapters with little or no bother. Although it doesn't require much prior knowledge, I didn't feel this book was all it was cracked up to be. Although it's been very helpful, a lot of the time, the author (one Elizabeth Castro), ...
...comes from. Which can be quite frustrating at times, especially at crucial parts that you need to understand. I'd recommend it as an introduction to anyone trying to learn Perl/CGI but you'll need the patience to work out why some of the parts are where they are etc. I'm sure there are better books out there, but the simplicity of this book makes it ideal for an introduction. ...

Upgrading and Repair your Computer

Advantages: It will save you time and money
Disadvantages: Your friends will be calling for help all the time

6 months ago i decided i wanted to know more about how my computer worked and to upgrade it for example. (new graphics card memory or dvd rom ) So i took the plunge and ordred a book from amazon called UPGRADING AND REPAIRING PCs by SCOTT MULLER for £32.00. It was the best money i have spent on my computer it has every thing a novice to expert needs to know in plain english. I started by just adding a new graphics card but over the months i have ...
...and have just built a second computer out of spare parts and bits bought at computer fairs for a fraction of the price of buying one in the shops. You may not want to go this far but it is worth buying just to know how to solve most problems or just doing a fresh install of your operating system (Windows, linux for example) You will save money in the long run do not be put off by the 1600pages as it is well laid out and as a bonus there are to 2 ...

JavaScript: the Definitive Reference

Advantages: comprehensive, clearly written, well organised
Disadvantages: not recipe book, not for beginners

Perhaps a good book on JavaScript does not exist, or JavaScript sucks, or I've yet to read the Goodman bible but "JavaScript the Definitive Guide" by David Flanagan published by O'Reilly is the clearest and most comprehensive description of the COMPLETE language and its implementation in Netscape and I.E thatI've seen. It is not for beginners. It is not good as a recipe book. The examples need to be worked through and understood. You cannot just ...
...Even so, if you're going to be serious about JavaScript then this book is an essential reference. In my view the dearth of good books on the subject is due to Javascript being a messy language further messed up by fights between the big two browsers providers. For a recipe book I'd try the Visual Quickstart Guide: "JavaScript for the world wide web" by Tom Negrino and Dori Smith. ...

JavaScript pocket reference

Advantages: small , cheap , good for reference
Disadvantages: no examples , no tutorials , not for beginners.

This book is another small reference book of only 89 pages and this and the cheap price of only $8.95 U.S dollars was what primarly interested me . The book is primarly an alphabetib object reference which lists JavaScript's objects this includes their availability(version of JavaScript) , a description of the object , the properties , methods and the event handlers. There is also about 25 pages at the start which briefly cover topics like data types ...
...for and do/while) , list of reserved keywords and a list of events . I bought this book mainly to have a reference book that was easy to use and find information fast , this book is good for this reason . The information at the start is an added bonus and can be used as a quick reminder of something you have forgotten. The negative points are there are no examples to try and of course no real tutorials so this book is not for someone starting to ...

HTML pocket reference

Advantages: small , cheap , useful reference charts.
Disadvantages: not for beginners , no tutorials , no examples.

This is a very useful book covering the HTML 4.0 w3c specification. It has 92 pages which comprise mostly a list of all the HTML tags available .Each tag shows the browser support , the correct syntax for the tag , the attributes associated with the tag (where applicable). There are also lists of tags associated only with Internet Explorer , Netscape Navigator or HTML 4 tags not supported in any browser. Near the back of the book there is a character ...
...a list of web safe colors with their color name , RGB values and also their hexadecimal values. This book is a nice quick ,easy reference guide for anyone interested in HTML 4.0 and the addition of useful charts at the end is also a plus point. One of the most important features is finding out tags and their attributes that are not supported in the major browsers . I would recommend this book to anyone who has a good understanding of HTML 4.0 . ...

County Bookshops

Advantages: Loads of cheap books
Disadvantages: A few of the books are a little out of date .. but not everyone has a P3-1000 either :)

I cannot recommend these shops enough if you want extremely cheap books (especially computing ones) for the programs and operating systems that aren't "today's" .. older versions of Windows, networking topologies, HTML code, old versions of Java. The books start at around £5 and go up to about £15 max .. I recently bought two boxed sets of books from the Microsoft training cirriculum. Windows NT Technical Support and Supporting Windows NT Server ...
...cost over £100 when first issued. Considered out of date because Windows 2000 is now out. My local one is in Llandudno, North Wales. But I've seen them in Watford (the main shopping centre down by Burger King in the food hall) and at the Arndale in Manchester. Also one in Chester, but memory doesn't serve me too well and where exactly it is .. think it's on the same street as the town crier and the posh hotel!! ...

HTML for beginners

Advantages: Clear, well explained, good illustrations
Disadvantages: May be too basic for those with some previous knowledge

HTML for the World Wide Web - Visual Quickstart Guide Author: Elizabeth Castro Peachpit Press ISBN: 0-201-69696-7 Cost: 15.99 from local bookshop I bought this book in order to set up a fairly simple web page quickly and easily. The advantage with this range of books is that each step is illustrated both with the HTML and an image of the result. Clear type and style. Easy to navigate with a good index. Very useful fold out back page with ...
...this book to be exactly what I needed - an introduction to HTML. I'm happy with the web page and will explore other HTML literature to learn some of the finer points, but this book was perfect for getting me started. Having said that, it would be far too basic for anyone with more than a smattering of HTML. You literally can create your first web page in a few minutes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who knows next to nothing about web authorship. ...

Java Foundation Classes In A Nutshell

Advantages: Well Detailed
Disadvantages:

You should buy this book if you wish to write graphic based applications in Java. Java Examples In A Nutshell doesn't cover the foundation classes and concentrates on the actual language itself. The write up is excellent and the class reference guide is up to date. Swing is explained well as are the various layout managers making this a good desktop reference. As with most of the Nutshell series of books this book is for intermediate to advanced ...

Java Enterprise In A Nutshell

Advantages: Good Synposis Of API's
Disadvantages: Doesn't Go Into Much Depth

This is a good title for those wishing to design web based Java apps applications and server programs. The book gives a cursory explanation of each Java API and topics are not covered in great but you are given handy reference points for further study. In my opinion this book is great for IT managers needing to get a elementary grasp of topics such as JBDC, and seeing if a architecture is relevant to their problem in hand. CORBA, JBDC & SQL, RMI ...

Another winner in a Nutshell

Advantages: Comprehensive, Well laid out
Disadvantages: none

Windows 98 in a Nutshell is another of the 'Nutshell' series by O'Reilly. This one is up to the usual high standards and priovides a comprehensive and easy to use reference to the commands and features in windows 98. This book is probably not for the absolute novice but would be suitable for anyone from the nervous beginner to the absolute expert. The book is well laid out with each chapter containing a wealth of useful information, hints and tips. ...

O Reilly DHTML Handbook

Advantages: Comprehensive
Disadvantages: Previous Expertise is necessary

This book is aimmed at fairly experienced HTML programmers who want a quick reference and need to know what tags do. The layout could be improved but the information is there, and which it doesn't act as a teaching aid, it is possible to learn a great deal from this book. It also covers elements of JavaScript, DOM, and CSS and is exceedingly comprehensive. Beginners however will flounder, as a knowledge of HTML coding (not just how to make awebpage ...
