What to look for and What to avoid

AdvantagesGood Bargins

DisadvantagesDodgy traders

"At a computer fair you are likely to see lots of type of stall, some of these you have to watch out for some of them you have to look for, others I cant say either way. Lets start at the places to avoid. Firstly there is nearly allway someone there claiming to sell untested goods at a fraction of the cost. These people claim they do not know whether or not the pieces will actually work. Well I tell you the chances are slim to none. If you think ..." Read review

Fair do

AdvantagesCheap parts can be found, Allsorts on offer

DisadvantagesDodgy dealers

"When I went to my first computer fair It was in Middlesborough and that is where my experience of fairs lies. Ive been to them a few times and each time I pick something or somethings up for good prices. There is some dodgy folk around trying to sell stuff but I rely on my judgement I stood at one stall looking at processor prices, then my g/friend said to me about needing a m/board. Then I was pulled to one side by the stallholder. He told ..." Read review

Abacus computer fairs, NW England

AdvantagesFun, friendly, fast, reliable, relatively cheap

DisadvantagesNone

"I've been going to the Abacus comptuer fairs for quite a while now, and I've got to say they are pretty damned good! They operater right through the North West of England, from Llandudno (Okay, so that's Wales, but only just) right up to Blackpool! The fairs are well organised, and you don't find any of the cowboy traders that you'll get elsewhere. I've not had any trouble with one piece of hardware / software I've bought from these fairs. In ..." Read review

Computer fairs Good and bad

Advantagescheaper than high street, meet with people who know what they are talking about

Disadvantagescan sometimes get crowded, sometimes get dodgy products

"Many people nowadays go to computer fairs to get those bargains on computer hardware since more and more people are becoming computer literate and competant. Computer fairs are a great place to go to get cheap products for your computer and also loads of other stuff like consoles, mobile phones, lava lamps and other such articles. When you buy from the vendors at computer fairs, many of them are computer businesses trying to get in some extra dosh ..." Read review

How to use the fairs

AdvantagesYou can save lots of money

DisadvantagesYou can lose lots of money

"These fairs are growing in popularity so get there early or you'll be waiting for ages and all the bargains will go! Try "Bowlers" in Manchester, it's an indoor cricket ground that everyone knows well. Golden rule is CAVEAT EMPTOR (let the buyer beware). If you are buying something small it could be a gamble, if you are buying something larger make sure you know who you are dealing with and if possible test it yourself or get a good demonstration. Here's ..." Read review

Bartering the Way to Go!

AdvantagesCheap deals

DisadvantagesToo many people, can get crowed

"Computer fairs are a great place to go if you know what your talking about and know what you want. Most charge and entrance fee, but it's normally made up for in the savings that you make when buying your hardware. Look aroung, get price lists and if you buy in twos or bulk you can normally knock a few pounds off. If youy looking for those odd bits for the computer too, like a PS/2 mouse to 15pin mouse convertor you will find one at a computer fair. Just ..." Read review

they're great

Advantagescheap and good

Disadvantagesgot to find them

"I think that computer fairs are great. They sell good quality hardware as well as software as well as a whole range of computer related media, from a three and a half inch floppy disk to eighty minute compact disk recordables. There is always a large range of everything at sometimes fifty percent off recommended retail prices, what more could you ask for? There is only one catch, sometimes you may need to pay an entry fee, notice I say sometimes, ..." Read review

Computer fair prices...

AdvantagesYou get some great bargains.

DisadvantagesYou cant be sure you will be able to get hold of a person for a refund.

"I have been to computer fairs several times, I think they are the best places to buy anything for your computer, be it hardware or software. These places are where you will get real value for money. The idea is that the general public can come along to these computer fairs and get anything for your computer at trade prices, cant say fairer than that. If you haven't been to a computer fair before and you are thinking about it, stop thinking and just ..." Read review

How good are they?

AdvantagesCheap, Wide Selection

DisadvantagesOEM, second hand being sold as new, not always cheaper than retail shops

"My experience of computer fairs is a mixed one. They tend to charge you a small token entrance fee £1.50 to £3. Once inside you can find everything from a mouse to a full multimedia system at a bargin price. I tend to go for well known brands at computer fairs, they are useally £5 to £10 more than the generic items, the only reason i do this is the first time i bought something from a computer fair it didn't have any drivers, it was a bargin, ..." Beware when spending!!

AdvantagesCheap and good bargains to be found

Disadvantages60% fail rate in my opinion

"I've been to many computer fairs in the last 3 years, and also know many people who also use them regularily. It is true that there are quite a few bargains to be found, although all I can say is good luck. I can give you examples were people have bought motherboards and processors of 'companies', who appeared to be genuine with business cards and the like. Paying by credit card, and finding the goods faulty, we tried to contact the sellers by a variety ..." Read review

You've got to be careful

AdvantagesVery cheap prices, good quality hardware

DisadvantagesEasy to get ripped off, or buy knocked off goods

"I am pretty much a veteran of computer fairs, and I must say that I personaly have never had any problems. I have picked up many good parts and software at great prices. The only problem you MAY have at a computer fair arises if you are inexperienced. I have a few mates who went down to a local computer fair, they hadn't been to one before. The first thing you do if you are about to buy anything is check in the box/static bag as to whether what is ..." Read review

Northern computer markets

Advantagesbrilliant for consumables like cdrs

Disadvantagesif things go wrong

"this fair comes to edgbaston cricket club a couple of times a week and I often go to check out the prices. The best things on sale are the blank CD-Rs where you can pick up one for as little as 25p and 100 for £18. They are very good for consumables like this and printer cartrages but for other things like big name graphics cards there arnt much difference in price unless it comes without a box. The problem with fairs is if you get a dodgy bit of ..." Read review

Buyer BEWARE

AdvantagesCheap and no waiting for delivery

DisadvantagesTo many Cowboys

"I have been visiting Fairs for 2-3years, My own experience is that the old addage 'Buyer Beware' should be kept in mind all the time. I have built up my own System for parts bought mainly from Fairs. All of my accesories (disks, disk storage, speakers,cd boxes & etc) have been purchased from fairs, in this area you can usually get the kind of bargains we only dream of. Like most others I have made so bad purchases, being in to much of a rush or ..." Read review

"News yesterday that Nokia (NOK) expects to see a decline in earnings in the third quarter wiped some 20% off its Helsinki-listed shares and 25% of its New York-listed ADRs. US trading in the stock was so high -- 121m ADRs exchanged hands -- that Nokia became the ninth-most traded stock in one day in US history. Finland's jewel in the crown traded up slightly today, gaining 5.5% to €47.50 in Helsinki and 6% to $43.563 in New York. But analysts expect ..." Read review

computer fairs-Pros and cons

Advantages

Disadvantages

"It is now 5 years since I have been in and out of computer fairs in London that I know and can express an honest opinion how the vendors operate and how the buyers can exploit these shows to pick up a bargain. The computer buyer would go to a computer fair hoping to pick a cheap purchase and where can have a choice of products and also to see for himself what is buying. At all times the buyer must remember that it only gets what it pays ..." Read review
