Advantages Advantages Makes you see things differently

Disadvantages Disadvantages Its hurts, but not for long

If you have read my previous ops you would understand why I am going through with counselling. A lot of us are fighting the demons in our past, its actually coming to terms, speaking to someone, and beating or controlling them that makes us a better person. After so many years living as an abused child, you forget who you really are and start to think that everybody else is right and you are wrong. Until you deal with these thoughts and extinguish them you will never move on. I had heard so many good comments about ASOCA (adult survivors of child abuse) that I thought I would look into it ... more

    Advantages Advantages Can be helpful.

Disadvantages Disadvantages So many different types to choose from.

Introduction: I have thought pretty long and hard about writing a review on therapy/counselling/psychotherapy, not least because I recognise that if I do write a review and let members here know what I do for a living I might get a lot of people contacting me via the guestbook, with questions that I can't or would not be prepared to answer. Also, I can only 'touch' on the subject here. However, I also recognise that a lot of people have a lot of misconceptions about the therapeutic world, as portrayed by TV therapists, and the constant reporting on celebrities 'in therapy'. So I guess I see ... more

Advantages Advantages Freedom to be yourself, healing.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Depends on the price.

It's quite rare for me to write or post two reviews so closely together but the last few weeks have been a time of certain changes for me and this topic seems to be a natural progression from one way of thinking to another. I don't like going over old ground but I'm always conscious that I may get reads from people that don't know me, so here's a bit of my background in a very short summary. ♠ I'm fifty-three years old, a mother of one daughter and a new grandmother. I was a single parent for most of my life and survived two bad marriages going back to full-time work when my daughter was ... more

Advantages Advantages Can help you work through your problems

Disadvantages Disadvantages Talking to a stranger about your innermost feelings is very emotionally draining!!!

People seek counselling for all sorts of personal reasons. Some have had a personal trauma of some sort, some just need a helping hand to find the direction they want to take in life. Others just need someone to listen to them. I have been seeing my counsellor, Kirsten, for 2 years now. If you have read my previous review you will know that the reason for this is because my mum commited suicide. At the time my family and friends all told me to go and see a counsellor. I refused, mainly because I didnt feel the need to speak to a total stranger about my problems and didnt feel it would do me ... more

Advantages Advantages You might like yourself more!

Disadvantages Disadvantages You will only change if you want to and the time is right

**Counselling - what is it?** Counselling is there to give a person the chance to explore, discover and clarify ways to live more happily and resourcefully while working towards a greater sence of well being. It should help you to identify the thoughts, behaviour and emotions that when they are explored will allow you to gain a greater sense of self and enable change if this is what you wish. **Why would i need counselling?** For most of us we toddle through life dealing with most things that are thrown at us. We have our ups and down but on the whole we manage. And then out of the blue ... more

    Advantages Advantages Can work

Disadvantages Disadvantages The gap between sessions

"I've just about reached breaking point", he snapped. Adrian Henri summed up in his one line poem, the irony in everyday relationship problems. Most people wait until critical melting point has been reached before deciding to do anything about it. Maybe it’s because any sort of counselling or therapy was seen as a very ‘American’ thing to do. All that primal-screaming, soul searching and delving into emotionally personal depths seemed distasteful to the English stiff upper lip. It appeared terribly gauche to our reserved nature; acutely embarrassing our private sensitivities ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None for me

I would ask you here to bear with me on this one. I am writing it from personal experiences, some of which are a little hard to confront again. I hope that I will be articulate enough in this opinion? And I think that it is going to be a long opinion too, thank you to those of you who will want to stay with me the whole way through. I have always considered myself to be a good listener, I now know that I could never be a counsellor. Not only do they have to be able to do the above but they also have to “hear” as well, some things that are not said are more relevant than those that ... more

Advantages Advantages An advantage to the individual in every way

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none at present

There is no stigma attached to seeing a qualified counsellor or should I say there should be no stigma!! I am writing this to give you the reader a small insight of what it is like to make the first phone call, to my first visit and how I felt. I hope it will give those people who may feel intimidated, the confidence to pick up the phone and make that all important first phone call. I am just your average person, not extremely outgoing, in fact rather shy but leading what I presume is a normal life! It had become apparent that it was time to seek some professional help, as I had been carrying ... more

Advantages Advantages can help you to take control of your life and change bad situations

Disadvantages Disadvantages lack of regulation, can be costly, and not a 'magic wand!'

There are occasional times in most of our lives when our usual coping mechanisms fail us – perhaps they get overloaded when life seems to treat us particularly harshly for a while, perhaps they are inappropriate for a current crisis, or even simply inadequate. There are lots of situations where counselling can be a way forward, and help you through the difficult times. I am not a counsellor, although I feel qualified to write this opinion as I have worked alongside counsellors in support services, trained as a volunteer supervisor and mediator and have extensively studied the counselling ... more

Advantages Advantages Its like having a dark heavy cloud lifted off your shoulders

Disadvantages Disadvantages might be a little embaressing to begin with

Hi, firstly in writing this I am talking about Counselling in general, and why am I writing about this subject, because it is a subject of mystery to most people, and stigma to others, and its about time the mystery was cracked and opened up a little.. Where do I fit in to all this...? well I have spent the last 12 years counselling Children and young teens who have been abused or who have behaviour problems, in addition to which for the last 6 years I have been Counselling all ages groups who have been bereaved, but specialising in Children when ever there is a need for a specialist Counsellor ... more
