This is cheap but very useful
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by janharper

Advantages: cheap versatile cleaner
Disadvantages: sticks in your fingers

I always keep a roll of fine steel wool available in the kitchen cupboard. (Make sure it can't get wet or it will rust.) This is useful for cleaning pans, removing rust and general scouring jobs. All you need to dop is add a few drops of washing up liquid, or dry soap powder depending on the job. (Remember Brillo Pads? This does the same job for less money and you don't have to have that pink smelly soap.) Steel wool can be used for cleaning ... Read review

Dirt be gone
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by Rosie6349

Advantages: keep the house clean
Disadvantages: none

I just read another op on this and decided to stop and write one myself. Her idea was a great one using a mop and a bucket of bleach and water to wash walls down. More ideas for the mop I have found. It's great on ceilings too. If you have panelling you can polish your panelling in no time. I keep a seperate mop for doing things without the use of water. I also use a mop in my bath tub. Because of having a bad back I can't bend well and if I ... Read review

OMG Just look at that water
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by sue26

Advantages: Cleans walls in a jiffy
Disadvantages: Shows up the damages

Well, I`ve been shopping again. This time the reason for my shopping trip was because I woke up with the urge to clean. No, I`ve not been taking drugs, I do clean sometimes you know. Even though I`ve just done a fairly big spring clean, and yes, I do know it`s November, I thought the house was still looking a bit grubby. You know the kind of grubby I mean, children type grubby. Handprints on the walls, cupboard doors, fridge doors, door frames, ... Read review

Clean your leather suite safely and save money
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by himmelblau

Advantages: Cheaper than leather cleaner, does not leave an oily film like baby wipes
Disadvantages: None recommended by an independant furniture dealer that I trust and have dealt with for years

I bought a leather suite just over a year ago and was advised by the owner of the shop, to clean the suite that I should use soap flakes as wetting the suite would damage it. I recently phoned the shop to assure myself that he had said soap flakes and then went to look for this product. The owner of the shop could have mentioned a brand name such as Lux Flakes which as I am sure the women among us will know are pure soap flakes, for cleaning fragile ... Read review

Top tips for dirt removal
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by sam123

Advantages: clean
Disadvantages: -

I have a few suggestions, which may come in handy when trying to remove dirt, at University I found that tea cups and mugs would get stained easily especially the inner base. This is not due to lack of washing the cups but simply the stains being to hard to remove. Well anyway I have a tip which will stop you from being embarrassed to leave your mugs out the next time someone comes round. Here is what you do, get some baking soda put into a plate ... Handy household tips
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by 3boyz

Advantages: useful to know
Disadvantages: none

I have a few household tips that my mum and nan have told me over the years, some may sound weird but they do work, so here goes: Get the grouting between bathroom tiles clean and white by brushing with an old toothbrush and some toothpaste, no need for any detergents, toothpaste does the trick. Stop bathroom mirrors from steaming up by appling a small amount of shaving foam and rubbing it in until it disappears, your mirrors will stay steam ... Read review

Miraculous Microwave Cleaning
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by Lightpants

Advantages: Quick, easy, no scrubbing
Disadvantages: Nowt

Just an exceptionally quick tip for getting your microwave clear of all those splats and splurts of beans, mushrooms, soup and whatever else gets the chance to dirty it. I got this top tip from my office's housekeeper - top lady.. Place a very small drop of Cif, Flash, kitchen spray (or your other favourite smelling cleaner) into a bowl of water - literally a drip or two to perhaps a 1/2 pint of water. Place the bowl in the microwave and ... Read review

Tight Tip
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by sillygilly

Advantages: Saves money
Disadvantages: None

I have got a great tip for everyone. Do you use your chip pan for cooking lots of fish, chips etc. If you do, you will probably notice that there will be lots of dirty looking pieces of batter left in the pan. A good way to filter the fat, and thus remove the bits is to cover the top of a saucepan (big enough to hold the fat) with the leg of an old pair of tights, secure it round the rim of the saucepan with a piece of elastic. Then pour the ... Read review

how to descale a kettle
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by nikannda

Advantages: cheap and smells nice, no chemicals
Disadvantages: tea may be a bit lemon tasting

This was and idea given to me by my mum, she had just bought one of those glass kettles. She found that she was having to descale it more frequently to keep it looking good as soon as there was any sign of scale you could see it swirling around in the water. She was worried about having to use a chemical descaler frequently so gave this idea a try. She found it works a treat. Cut a lemon into quarters and place in the kettle. Fill the kettle with ... Clean kettles, sinks, toilets effortlessly
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by springer71

Advantages: Clean kettles, sinks, toilets effortlessly!
Disadvantages: None.

I have discovered the best cleaning product with no effort needed! Gives you more time to yourself and the boring jobs take care of themselves. Fill your sink with cold water and add a couple of baby sterilizing tablets, leave to soak, leave as long as possible, maybe an hour, a quick wipe and its like new. Drop a couple in the toilet last thing at night or if you are going shopping etc. when you come back the bottom will be like new. They clean ... Read review

cleaning stainless steel
Review of Member Advice on Dirt Removal by jakey1

Advantages: excellent finish for s/s and chrome
Disadvantages: none

The current fashion for stainless steel and chrome products in the home, particularly cookers, poses the question of how to clean and polish them.I own a Britannia stainless steel range cooker, stunningly beautiful, but an absolute pain to keep a clear mirror finish on it. Products like Homecares Shiny Sinks and Stainless Steel cleaner are excellent, but only if you are using the right type of cloth.I highly recommend Microtex Cloths from Lakeland plastics, the ...
