Six months ago I was eventually diagnosed with a Hypothyroidism (in layman's terms Under Active Thyroid and through the rest of this piece I will use UAT ). I say eventually because I have had many of the symptoms for as long as I can remember but my GP's failed to put two and two together or just ignored them. Your Thyroid Your Thyroid is in your neck, under your voice box and Adams Apple and above your windpipe and works in collaboration with your pituitary gland. Your Thyroid together with the pituitary gland produces hormones that regulate how your cells and organs work within your body ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to live with once diagnosed...

Disadvantages Disadvantages They take lots of blood tests...

So little ol’ Kirsty1 is lying in A & E awaiting diagnosis from the “Big Cheese”. She’s been prodded by a houseman, and poked by a Junior doctor, not to mention having been prodded AND poked by the GP why had sent her to A & E in the first bally place. They have all said “It’s Appendicitis” with great aplomb so if the large Edam would just say the same we could all get a move on with cutting the offending organ out of Kirsty1. So out she is stretched, reading Three Men in a Boat, when a nurse comes in to “generally hustle” in the background. Hustle she does indeed until she abruptly stops to ... more

Before my thyroid problem had been diagnosed, I had been feeling unwell for quite a few weeks, not exactly ill but not 100% either. I was very hot all the time day and night and this was late autumn going into early winter and I was still wearing t-shirts! I didn’t seem to need too much in the way of sleep either, (it was nothing unusual to find me ironing or something 2 or 3 in the morning) and I couldn’t bear wearing anything that came round my neck too high, everything had to be either scooped neck or v- necked. The crunch came one day while I was out driving my car, I started to shake ... more

Hands up if you know where your thyroid gland is? Ok you’re right it’s in your neck shaped like the letter ‘H’ it sits in your neck, working its little boots off keeping you fit and well. So now put your hands up if you actually know what the function of the thyroid gland is? (Is this an opinion or lecture?) The reality is that thyroid disease affects 1 in 10 women and 1 in 100 men, and can make you feel absolutely awful. The thyroid gland produces ‘Thyroxine’, and the hormone ‘Thyroxine’ in turn affects every part of your body. There are two ... more

I am writing this on the offchance it may assist others. My daughter has neonatal hypothyroidism...sounds scary doesn't it? well it did the first time we heard it. Anna was just 2 weeks old when we were first sent to Alder Hey. All babies have a hell prick blood test within the first week of life. This test looks for 2 different things...first the PKU (phenoketourin i think but don't quote me) which is an inability to digest milk protein, and thyroid issues. A week after her test and me having forgotten all about it I was shocked to be called to Alder Hey childrens hospital regarding her ... more

Last November all I wanted to do was sleep. It was all I could do to stay awake on my days off caring for my son and once my husband came home I had to go to bed. One weekend I slept for 18 hours each day - my family did not know what was wrong with me. My hair was falling out in clumps and my skin was very dry and flakey. I had put on lots of weight, clocking in at 11 and a half stone on a 5ft 3" frame. I was constantly tired and hardly eating but gaining weight each week. My friends later told me they thought I was preganant and just did not want to tell them. I was constipated and had ... more

It was 1987. My son was about 6 months old, and I felt strange. The feelings I had crept up on me really. At first I put it down to having 2 young children and a marriage that was going badly wrong. But after months of these feelings I knew I had to go to the doctors to find out what was wrong. I was hot all the time, I would wake up at 2 in the morning and want to get up and work, sometimes I would then suddenly tiredness would hit me after a few hours and I had to sleep, but not for long and I would be on the go again. I was always hungry, yet I was losing weight at an alarming pace.My hands ... more

Having read two opinions on the Underactive Thyroid i though i would chuck my lot in. firstly let me dispell the myth that it's a womans problem, it isn't sorry ladies but you have to share. I know it's not a funny subject but for those of us who have it you hav to laugh or you'd cry. Anyway back in the dark dim and distant past i.e 1985 i was a fit young man of the ripe old age of 25, i used to spend 3-4 night a week working out at home on the weights and run 3 miles a night on the nights i wasn't working out. Over a period of a couple of months my girlfriend noticed that i was losing weight ... more

I will start by telling you a bit about hypothyroidism the symptoms and how it is treated I have been taking thyroxin for 11 years now and my levels are never right so I though this would be good review for me to do Some people do not know where the thyroid is located so I have include a diagram for this Hypothyroidism overly know as an under active thyroid (mexoedema and hashimotos disease) is simply when the thyroid gland dose not produce enough thyroxin so the bodies metabolism slows down and can only be treated by the taken of thyroxin tablets which start from 25mcg it will depend on your ... more
