Ciao, despite everything we say about it, does sometimes get its categorisation right. At least, that’s the thought that struck me when I found this topic listed under “Member Advice on Relationships and Family” rather than under “Member Advice on Pets”. A pet is a family member and the effect of a pet’s death on a family can be profound. I approach the writing of an opinion on this topic with some trepidation. In the first place, I am far from sure that I have any useful advice to offer others on how to cope with the death of a pet; I can only relate how our family is currently coping with ... more

Advantages Advantages The joy your pet brought just from having had them

Disadvantages Disadvantages The end of a precious life

A year ago I sat and wrote about the death of my cat Shadow. It wasn't by any means a conventional opinion, or a well-planned piece of writing; it was an expression of emotion straight from the heart because that's all I could manage at that time. A year on, now, I smile when I think of her. That's not to say it doesn't make me sad too, but she lived a good and happy, albeit brief, life as part of our family. On the 10th of December 2002, Shadow had her breakfast, and sat a while with Paul on the settee. She then climbed the stairs to her favourite spot on the landing and lay down alongside ... more

Pet Bereavement All seasoned pet owners are only too familiar with the strong, emotional responses suffered, upon the loss of their pet, be it mouse, dog, cat or donkey. This review is mainly about those responses and how we deal with them; and may well be more useful to none-pet owners, in that they may understand the exceptionally strong emotional reaction to a beloved pet's death. I shall not be describing the demises of my own dear, faithful ones - so put those tissues back in the box and save another tree. Because my episodes of bereavement were over the losses of my dogs, I will be ... more

Advantages Advantages The love the faithfulness. The good times.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The pain the wretched suffering ...the loss.

Today we had to do one of the hardest things we have as a family have ever done. We decided to let our pet go. We only knew on the same day he was put to sleep. Forgive me for plonking this here as this isn't strictly in the right catagory but not knowing where else to put it -my view is one that is emphatically humanly selfish but- that is definately the right view for the ANIMAL. FOR anesthesia when an animal a beloved pet has passed the point of return is the kindest thing in the long run. But that's my opinion. You are entitled to yours but- It is selfish to keep an animal alive when their ... more

13 July 2004 I started to write this at 5.30 am this morning, I feel sick, miserable beyond belief in fact I am finding it very difficult to put how I feel into words. The thing is you see we are going to lose a treasured member of our family today and it is our own choice that we are letting this happen. I should tell you that the family member is an animal but to us it makes no difference, it literally means as much as a loss of a child to all of us. Koko is a Siberian Husky cross and is very large and very white, the problem is she thinks she is still a young thing and yet she is nearly 15 ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages The experience will be traumatic for a dog left on its own for the first time.

It’s a year ago this weekend that our dog, Lady Lucy Magee died. It was hard for us to cope with, but harder still for the dog that Luce left behind. This is what she had to say at the time. ******* Hi! My name’s Rosie O’Hooligan Magee and I’m a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog. I was so pleased when I saw this category because I’d like to tell you about what’s happened to me. Some of you may have read about my big sister, Luce. She was a rescue dog who’d been very badly treated before she came to live here. That’s her picture on the “Member Advice On Rescue Dogs” category. Luce wasn’t really my big ... more

While scuba-diving off of Virgin Gorda, (one of the British Virgin Islands) a couple of years ago, I happened upon a colony of beautiful and exotic looking "Conch" shells, one of which I wanted to take home with me. When I picked it up, I thought its previous owner had abandoned it for larger quarters. After taking my boat back to the dock, while rinsing my gear, I noticed movement in the shell. The little conch inhabitant must have suddenly become aware of his strange new surroundings, and had shuffled to the front entrance of his dry-docked, concentric-spiral of a home to advise me of his ... more

Advantages Advantages Pets are wonderful companions

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pets don't last forever

Emma was my first 'real' cat - I had done cat sitting prior to this, but Emma was the first. I had been raised with dogs and other pets, but never a cat. But, as I was a student and didn't have time for 'doggy duties', I thought a cat would be more self-reliant. Neighbours had several cats, and a cat-flap door which enabled their cats indoor/outdoor access. Emma was a stray, and wandered through their door looking for food. My friends would have loved to keep her (she had a light brown cream colour fur coat, very soft, and she was very gentle) but they had their requisite number of cats. So, I ... more

I started thinking about someone I haven't thought of in quite some time. Forgive me if I sniffle, it's ok, I brought some tissues. I knew this would be the case you see. Ben was my Mam's dog, who lived to the ripe old age of sixteen. He was a Heinz 57 type of mix, with his little legs and his thin tail, he wasn't anything special. Or at least that's what you'd think at first sight. Ben was there all the way through my childhood. He used to have is own red dummy and I had my pink ones. He used to let me put him in my pram and he never made a fuss. The only time he ever got upset was when Jim ... more

Its a hard thing to deal with, as a pet is a memory of your family. When your pet dies it affects everyone in your family and it was left to my daughter to explain to my grandchildren and she coped very well. The eldest took it very hard and the youngest asked so many questions and after that she wanted to come see us and give us both cuddles, which she did, she is a very thoughtful and caring 6yrs old. Benji had a heart attack away back in February and was put on heart and water pills and was doing great, he seemed back to his old self until wednesday the 11th june when my daughter was in we ... more
