Advantages Advantages reveals the story behind your family, there's always something unusual to know

Disadvantages Disadvantages it's a seriously addictive hobby, requires time or money or both!

I have a problem that might be verging on the point of becoming an addiction - I spend quite a lot of time learning about dead people! But not just any dead people - this lot are my ancestors, so I hope that gives me some kind of excuse. My head, my notebooks and two separate lever arch files are now full to bursting point with notes, census details, certificates for births, marriages and deaths, little plastic hole-punched pockets containing delicate original items like my grandma's birth certificate and things that can't be hole-punched like photographs of gravestones, I have trawled some ... more

Advantages Advantages Addictive, you'll never know who you might meet, where you might travel

Disadvantages Disadvantages Like any passion can be costly in time and money

There are few of us these days who do not have at least a sneaking curiosity in discovering who we are and where we came from. This interest has been heightened by the exploits and experiences of celebrities in tracing their own family histories in such programmes as BBC Television's "Who do you think you are?". Who knows for certain that there is not a prince or a knight lurking in the distant past? Or deeds of bravery or scandals long forgotten? Or accomplishments in fields unsuspected, acts of kindness gone unrewarded or barbaric punishments meted out for criminal behaviour? What was going ... more

Advantages Advantages THE FEELING OF BELONGING TO SOMETHING IS LIKE NOTHING ELSE

Disadvantages Disadvantages IT'S HARD WORK AND YOU OFTEN UNCOVER THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT EXPECT.

Family History Searching out The Secrets of The Long Ago Folk All the years I was growing up, my aunties and uncles on my dad's side would comment on how much I looked like their mother. I remember being stopped in the street when I was 11 by an old woman who said, rather mysteriously, that I must be one of Isobella's. I was at the age of being desperately shy and embarrassed at being stopped by old ladies in front of my sisters and cousins, and I think I giggled and walked away. As the years when past, I wished I had listened to the woman, and found out what she knew about my grandmother. You ... more

Advantages Advantages Great fun. You never know what you will find!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The cost!

So, you want to research your family history, do you? But, it's a big world out there, and where the hell do you begin? It's not going to be easy, it can be expensive, what websites do you visit? I'll give up now! No! Don't do that! Read on my friends, and hopefully I'll be able to tempt you into tracing your ancestors! There's a difference between 'genealogy' and 'family history'. Genealogy is when you want to do a specific time-line for your ancestors and do a tree. Family history is when you want to do a particular search on a member/s of your family and find out more about their lives ... more

Do you really know where you come from? Just think about that before you embark on the journey back in time and be prepared! It can be a roller coaster ride full of ups and downs and frustrations but at the same time addictive and time consuming. Would I recommend it YES and you've guessed it I'm hooked! Advantages Advantages A great hobby and information for future generations

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be time consuming

People can become interested in the history of their families for many different reasons. Our interest started in a mild way on a very enjoyable caravan holiday in Perth, Scotland. Anyone who has holidayed in Scotland will know that the place is buzzing with people from all over the world trying to trace their Scottish roots. The gift and souvenir shops all cater for this and there is an endless supply of charts and maps Etc. Showing the history of the clans, Scottish names and the various associated tartans along with all types of souvenirs with the family name or coat of arms on them. We ... more

Advantages Advantages Great fun finding everyone

Disadvantages Disadvantages need plenty of time and a fair bit of money

I started doing the Family Tree about 8 years ago as something to do for hubby Pete. He is the fourth of six children. His mother had died when he was 10 and his Dad had died when he was 4 so the only relatives he knew were his three brothers and two sisters and thier children. I don't come from a very big family and my dad had started ours. I didn't want to step on any toes so decided to do Pete's So where did I start? Well at first I kept all the details on paper in separate folders for each section of the family. I got all the details of his brothers and sisters from them and worked ... more

Advantages Advantages very interesting and you get a buzz when you find the ancestor you are looking for

    Disadvantages Disadvantages time consuming

For a number of years we have thought about tracing our family tree and havent done much about it. With another generation arriving in the family we decided that now was the time to do it. I would like to tell you how we did it and some of the "mistakes" we made just incase you are thinking of doing your family tree. We decided to do the male side of my Husbands family. So although I have a 97 year old Mum in Law she didn't have all the details so we basically started from scratch. The first thing to know is that the census' run from 1841 to 1911 although 1911 is not quite complete. These ... more

    Advantages Advantages very interesting

    Disadvantages Disadvantages can be costly

Growing up i had always hear lots of stories about various members of my family. Most of whom were about people who died before i was born. As i got old i wanted to know more things like when and where they were born, who they married how many children they had. However the only people who knew that , had sadly pasted away many years ago. Not knowing how to get the information i wanted i put the idea to one side. Then in 2002 after moving to a new area. I decide that i had to do something to get me out of the house. I found out that the local high school does adult evening classes. So i looked ... more

    Advantages Advantages none

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

I became interested in genealogy a few years ago in my teens when I decided I wanted to start my family tree. I come from a big family, my mum being one of five and my dad one of nine, so I have lots of relations. However, I have to admit there are some that I hardly know as my Dad comes from a little country called Mauritius, so half my relations are spread throughout the world as they have emigrated from there to Canada and France. This made tracking down my family tree somewhat difficult. For my mum's side of the family, I gathered what information I could from my grandma, which was quite a ... more
