    Disadvantages Disadvantages slow and expensive

This is a basic review on WAP itself, this was the only category that I could find to place it in, if anyone knows where else let me know. Enjoy! WAP is this year's biggest hype, with mobile phone companies and shops bragging that it's the "hippest" way of getting the Internet on the move. However, WAP has not lived up to its debut and it is now being billed as a poor relation interim to second-generation mobile phone technology that will rapidly put it in the retirement home. WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol and is basically a way of transmitting data to a mobile device. The big ... more

Advantages Advantages Highly convinient, very powerful if used in conjunction with PC based Internet

Disadvantages Disadvantages Calls very expensive, some services such as banking and sharedeling only available on certain models of WAP phone

WAP, in my view, has been hard done by in its initial reviews. The main reason for this was critics putting it down for not being the mobile Internet it was never cracked up to be. Once you strip away the false expectations, it becomes a very useful tool. There have been a number of times where I’ve been in situations, wondered about sports results and had no way of finding them out. In the old days I would have had to wait till I got access to the news, teletext or a PC Internet connection. Then, when I got a mobile, I would resort to ringing a mate. Now, with WAP, I don’t even need to ring ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages I can't really comment on the disadvantages as it is not yet released in the U. K. I will update this opinion when it is realesed.

[*UPDATED] WAP phones (Wireless Application Protocol) may be the latest craze to hit the U. K but the latest craze in Japan is the “I-mode”. I-mode has been in Japan for about a year now and it is already making waves over there. About I-mode ************ Mari Matsunaga an ex-journalist created the I-mode. DoCoMo currently owns the i-mode. It is also part of the NTT, which is the equivalent to BT. in May 1999; the company predicted that it might reach 3 million users in that year. By March 2000, they had attracted 5 million users and are currently attracting well over 10 million ... more

Being a web developer, I thought I should experiment with the world of WAP phones. I can tell you, I was dissapointed. The concept is a great Idea. Making the internet come to life in your phone. The trouble is, technology is not yet advanced enough to make this practical. You can only access certain web sites, you will not be able to recieve pictures on the 2 tone screen, and the speed is very slow indeed. I think The internet should stay on computers where it can be handled. After all, that is where it was intended to be used. Computers can handle all of this because they are huge things that ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Very expensive, in excess of 50p a minute

When you think of WAP (wireless application protocol), you think of a really slow internet connection via a mobile which cost a bomb. Well, that, in short, is right. So I am about to inform you who don't already know about GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). It is basically using a high speed modem on a WAP platform using GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and TDMA (time devision multiple access) operators. GPRS is just a simplified version of a very advanced technology called EDGE (enhanced data for global evolution). WAP is very slow as a wireless communicator, but GPRS is double ... more

WAP is the biggest disaster to hit the mobile phone market since the Snake game! On todays phones, WAP really is cr*p, with little information available apart from news, sport, weather and horoscopes. The service is EXTREMELY slow, and expensive. WAP is short for Wireless Application Protocol, although SUW would be a better name for it…Slow, Unreliable and Worthless. I have split the elements of WAP into sections, se below…. *WHAT CAN YOU SEE ON WAP Very little of use is the basic answer to that question. On my Trium Mars, I can get access to news, weather, sport, horoscopes and ... more

Advantages Advantages offers elementary mobile internet provision

Disadvantages Disadvantages painfully slow, limited content

WAP is the current buzzword, with all the m-commerce possibles that are opened up by WAP enabled phones. However the fact of the matter is that WAP is a definite underperformer, not least becasue of the dirth of good WAP content that was available when WAP was first launched. Effectively it was little more than an a slight advancement over the operator services offered over SMS by Orange and Vodafone on phones such as the 3210. The puny Data Transfer Rate was clearly a stumbling block, and even GPRS in its first incarnation doesn't look to have really made the mobile internet experience ... more

    Advantages Advantages Not many

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad quality, small screen

WAP phones were one of the most hyped products to be brought out but when they first came out they were extremely expensive and most people could not afford them. They have since become less pricy but it is still expensive to connect to the net. Once of the internet the quality is poor and some people cannot even tell what website they are even on. The fact that they are black and white makes it boring to visit a site. Why bother to go to all the trouble of connecting on a phone to see a website on a tiny screen when most people have the internet at home anyway and those who do now would be ... more

WAP phones...what a great gimic...the ability to check sports results play online hangman and send emails on the go....it make s a great present for the first few weeks..then the novelty wears off...then once every few weeks you may need to use the highly overpriced increadibly slow access to the WWW. A pointless exercise....DO NOT BUY THE BORING WAP PHONES...if you want to buy a phone that is stylish with WAP cabilities for infrequent use buy the Nokia 7110 or the new Sony mobile..they are stylish, and can use WAP. the other wap phones look like bricks, feel like a bricks and are not greatly ... more

Advantages Advantages being able to check email

Disadvantages Disadvantages lack of wap sites (information) at the moment

I bought a war phone back in April of 2000, but I didn't start using it until late 2000. At first I was impressed by the fact that you could get some information through your phone, but that soon wore off. The information you can get is very basic. Searches only return pages that are of course wap enabled (ie written in .wml), this is not many at the moment, but of course may grow in number in time. You can however get brief news stories, and sport results (ideal if you're down the pub during an important football match!) The one thing I have found useful is the ability to check email. On my ... more
