Advantages Advantages Added interest, and an incentive of sorts….

Disadvantages Disadvantages ….even if it's an irrational and unrewarding sort

For my 200th review, in the absence of any more inspirational ideas, I've decided to follow the round-number tradition and write an inward-looking review about Ciao itself. My subject is an aspect of Ciao some members feel strongly about: the community points system and the related scale of coloured dots. I'm not one of those members. I don't feel strongly about it, neither for nor against, though on balance I am mildly in favour for reasons explained below. Apart from that, it seems worth writing about because I find its effect on the behaviour of the Ciao community, myself included, very ... more

Advantages Advantages For Ciao loads, for us none

Disadvantages Disadvantages Encourage abuse and strange behaviour. Oh and did I mention they're pointless

*I originally wrote this review over five years ago in 2006, when I was feeling particularly disillusioned, but I do feel it's as pertinent now as it was then. I'm going to make no apologies here, this is going to be a rant, so if you love community points (CPs) then I suggest you skim down to the bottom, give me a token rate, maybe leave a token comment and get a few precious points to add to your total. In case you haven't guessed I don't like the point system, I think it's stupid and encourages some very strange behaviour. Right that's my opinion, so now I'd better justify myself…. I didn't ... more

Maybe it's just me as a new member, but ciao community points strike me as a complete waste of time. What are they exactly? No one seems to know; apart from they give you a pretty coloured dot once you start accumulating them (apart from bronze dots, which frankly my dears look like poo). And why do people take the community points/dot colour thing so seriously. They don't make you rich, they don't make you popular, and they don't give you sexual pleasure (unless you're very very sad indeed) Now, until last week I was white dot, strugglinf (despite reading and rating others) to get any reads ... more

    3 Stars Dots 22/06/2002
    User doesn't recommend the product

Advantages Advantages You can be violet.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You can't stay violet forever.

You know, my mother really wouldn't like these dots. Her name is Dorothy (her middle name is "even worse" but I shan't embarrass her by mentioning it here). Her most hated diminution is Dot or Dotty. She really, really, really wouldn't like these dots. You mustn't tell her but I think they're super. Or rather, I do now I have a violet one. The violet one is by the far the nicest colour, don't you think? I'd like to stay pretty violet for always. I should be serious. If you're new, you may not have a clue what I'm talking about. (You're probably not new, you're almost certainly less new than me ... more

1 Star My Ops Aren't Red, But By Golly My Dot Is! Review with images 12/08/2003

Advantages Advantages Greatly simplifies the process of determining whether or not a writer merits being read.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages I'm a writer

. •@•@•@•@ INTRO: ISSUE SPOTLIGHT •@•@•@•@ After carefully considering the seemingly endless variety of problems currently confronting us, oh my fellow Earthlings; finding alternative energy forms, the rising cost of living, government corruption and oppression, the unrest in the Middle East and the Far East, finding a cure for cancer and various other diseases, squalor, famine, Ciao addiction, etc., I decided to discuss the issue that weighed heaviest on my soul: "WHAT ARE THE PRO'S AND CONS OF CIAO'S COLOURED-DOT COMMUNITY CASTE SYSTEM?" Due to previous derogatory comments I may have made ... more

Advantages Advantages No longer getting paid - some advantage

Disadvantages Disadvantages No longer getting paid

I was going to refrain from commenting on Ciao's changing pricing structure, but after reading (and commenting) on some I decided that I should get my 2p's worth (0p actually). It was astute of Ciao to give very short notice of the new policy so that all the ops of complaint (or support) of which there seems to be many, are now unpaid. I have a few points to make 1 I have been a member of both Ciao and DooYoo for some time now. 2 DooYoo pays better than Ciao 3 Even so I've always preferred Ciao to DooYoo, I have written 44 ops on Ciao (with 758 reads on these), and earned £26.08. I have ... more

Advantages Advantages well I suppose it cheers the place up a bit

Disadvantages Disadvantages far more than 255 characters worth.

It was with great excitment that I read the email ciao delivered to my inbox last week. It said they were reorganising the payment system, making it harder for churners to churn and stopping the clicking cartels. Yipee, I said. At last ciao was going to get even better. Then I read the next paragraph and I don't think I'm exagerating if I say that my heart sank. I was so disappointed. Can't Ciao see that the only people they are hurting are the people that really care about the community. I have a lot of grieveances about the new structure and I know that this category is only meant to be ... more

Advantages Advantages Erm...it helps older and wiser members spot newcomers.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Everything else. I seriously do NOT see the point behind the little dots in front of our usernames.

Oh, aren’t these Community Points delightful? Some of us have tens of thousands of points in our accounts, and some of us have but a few hundred. Depending on the number of points in our accounts, we have different colored dots in front of our nicknames – anything from white (the lowest) to gold (the highest at 500,000 Community Points). We earn points, of course, by actively participating here at Ciao. Read, write, rate, comment, add to trusted lists, et cetera – it all earns points for yourself or the people that you trust. Thirty points just for writing a review – ... more

Advantages Advantages A Boost to the writer

    Disadvantages Disadvantages But......

Look around you, look at the people who've rated your last opinion and the people you trust and occasionally talk to via your Ciao Guestbooks - whats the one thing you notice first? Well to me - its those ickle dots next to the persons name, and personally I'd prefer it to be the name I notice, not how well they've done community wise. Dots then.... or Points...... or whatever it is you prefer to call them - basically, that little score on your profile that sits there slowly going up and up - unless you have a revenge rater on your hands...... in which case the score will be going all the way ... more

~ ~ Ciao have given a new slant to the old “Dire Straits” song “Money For Nothing”. They have invented a whole new song called “Write Here For Nothing, Give Your Ops For Free”. I know this Category is to comment on the new Community Points “coloured dot” system they have recently introduced, and anyone of you who have read much of my previous work here at Ciao will know that I am a strong supporter of this, and have been calling for Ciao to introduce it here at the UK site almost right from the time it was first introduced on their other sites on ... more
