★ Introduction ★ This review is based on my experience of owning and using a Mercedes A Class Classic 140 over the past 5 years. This review may not be lacking a little in terms of technical specs, since I do not really know much more about cars than being able to open the bonnet, girly girl that I am! However, I passed my driving test many moons ago and have had plenty of time behind the wheel. Therefore, this review may be of interest to those considering purchasing a second hand A Class or one of the slightly different new ones which I think start with the A150. ★ My Cars ... more

    Advantages Advantages it's small

    Disadvantages Disadvantages it's small!

The car is distinctive with it's mini-MPV looks, the only other car in its class is the Audi A2 which in my view is perhaps the more solid car. Having considered this car in my recent quest for a new car, I have run my eyes over the car and played around with the various twiddly bits for a critical assessment. One of the primary reasons for it's consideration is of course it's badge sitting proudly on the bonnet and the steering wheel. The other reason is that sitting in this vehicle gives you a semi 4x4 view of the road and feeling of 'superiority' ...king of the road and all that....However ... more

Advantages Advantages It's a mercedes! Easy to drive and park

Disadvantages Disadvantages Small boot, service costs.

It may seem a strange time to write a review about the original Mercedes A Class considering that the revised model is now available. However, I guess there's still a good second hand market for the original A Class, so if you're thinking of buying one now, this is for you. I'd always wanted an A Class since they first came out. The shape just appealed to me, and I imagined that as it was a Mercedes this would be a quality car. My model is a year 2000, A140 Classic. The number is the models refer to the engine size, i.e. 140 is a 1.4 engine, 160 is a 1.6 engine, and the 170 is a 1.7 diesel ... more

Advantages Advantages Small but big(!?), Stylish (front view!), Flat floor, Large driver's footwell

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rear end chatter, Useless traction control, Gutless engine (overweight chassis?)

This is obviously a vehicle that cannot make up its mind as to what it's supposed to do or be. Is it a car, a very small truck, or an MPV that's been concertina'd in a crash? Many people have asked why Mercedes built this thing but, as (unexpectedly) many drivers have bought one, something about it must be right .One such driver was my wife who bought a new A140 (against my advice) so it it might help to note her reasons for doing so. Firstly, it has the obvious high driving position and the adjustable seat and steering column - the latter being a boon for the missus because she's got very ... more

I purchased my Merc A140 from Mercedes Direct in August 2004, it was a green one and had 17k on the clock, on an Avantgarde trim. Recently though I've sold it and now feel its appropriate to list the pros and cons of this particular model Size & Space For a start, I bought the long-wheel base version, this gave it approximately 20cm extra space, yeah I know doesn't sound like much but compared with the short-wheel base (which i also drove) there is a sense of more space. I'd recommend anyone to go for the long-base one. I easily managed to get 5 adults in the car (including me) numerous times ... more

Since passing my driving test 2 years ago, I have been cruising around in my parents A class, and my mk3 Fiesta. The first thing to stike you when driving an A Class is how refined it is. Sure its the size of a fiesta, and in some cases its cheaper, but you can really appreciate the quality! Sitting in the drivers seat, you can adjust it to almost any position, to ensure a comfortable driving position. This coupled with the high driving position, you really feel at ease on the road. The engine and gearbox are increadibly smooth, and for a 1.4 litre engine, it can move (although, with a load ... more

This is my first review, and had never planned to do one until the Mercede Benz A-Class moved me to writing about it. I purchased a A140 Avangarde in December of last year. I have to say I am completely bowled over by what a complete car it is. It may be as short as a Ford KA, but there is space and quality a plenty. Ride - 1400cc, this is ideal for city life, however when cruising on the motorway, it has a presence, and there is always enough power when you need it. The handling and control is nothing less than you might expect from a Mercedes. It is very responsive despite being such a ... more

I bought this car after having my third child. It was to be our family second car so that I could transport three children about safely when my husband was at work. Our main car is an Alfa Romeo 156 however the baby merc has taken over. We use it all the time as a family car. All the children fit nicely in the back (and they are not small by any means - we have one 17year old, one 12 year old and a baby - car seat and all.) The children say that the space and comfort in the back is better than the Alfa. The air conditioning works well in the rear too. (Again better than the Alfa). The car has ... more

What a car. It has a list price of around £14000 but it is readily available at car supermarkets for just £12,000. What a bargain. For the same price as a Ford Focus you can have a MERCEDES. Not only does the A class combine style, space and value it also offers a great drive. The 1.4 litre engine is a superb unit providing around 40mpg without compromising on performance. 0-60 is knocked up in around 12 seconds and a top speed of 110mph is more than enough. This care really does feel faster and sporties than the figures suggest. The sharp brakes and suspension make driving around town a ... more

Purchased from a Mercedes Dealership in France and personally imported, the buying experience lived up to the name A Class. Using the French luxury option, a leather interior and sunroof were added above the UK elegance spec, at a competitive price. The chrome accents fit well with the silver paint work and the cream leather fits well with the wood trim, making the dash much improved on pre face lift model. Easy to drive, with good visibility from the large glass area and high seating level. This also makes entry and exit easy. The rear and front passenger seats can be removed, to give an ... more
