Further update August 2009: Mileage 26000 (low for age of car) and the service indicator finally said another service was required. This is only the second service. Booked in at 0.5 days notice. Cost of basic service just under £300. I had the brake fluid changed as a precaution as this wasn't included in the service. This was extra. Also had the wiper blades ... ...June. I use the headlamps as day running lights so this wasn't totally surprising. Both bulbs were easy to change. Cost from the Mercedes dealer was around £6 each. Still no faults or rattles. On a 120 mile motorway trip recently the average fuel consumption was just under 62 mpg. ...

Advantages: good in the cities, good fuel consumtion Disadvantages: weak engine over 140 km/h, spaciousness
I got my A 170 CDi in November 1999. Since then, i've driven almost 20000 kilometers. The A-Class, especially the Avantgarde model with AMG-wheels, is a good looking alternative to all the VW Golfs out there. In detail:
-Motor: The 1,7 liter, 90 hp engine isn't the most powerful. It's OK in the city, where its strong momentum really helps to accelerate at low revs. But as soon as you hit the highways, the engine sees its limits. There passes a lot ... ...170 km/h, its highspees, unless you drive downhill with wind from behind.
Grade: city:A- highway: C+
-interior: The front seats are comfortable. Even long trips don't cause back pain. Different the situation in the back: For people over 180 cm travelling in the A-Class could be a tough trip. The seats are pretty uncomfortable and there is not much room for the legs.
Not very Mercedes-like is the plastic atmosphere inside. Grade: B
All in all, ...

Advantages: Comfort, Economy , Practicality Disadvantages: Low profile tyres lead to easy kerb damage.
I was actually looking for an A190, but a very nice A170 Classic came up at a local dealer who persuaded me to overcome my prejudice against diesels & try it. I am very pleased that he did! Power is smooth, impressive enough (90bhp on my model) & is acceptably quiet. There was an issue with wind noise around the drivers door, but this was easily fixed under warranty. Dashboard functions, especially the resetting of the ASSYST service intervals are ... ...an equivalent size petrol engine, the turbo diesel actually encourages a more relaxed drive. In real terms the sacrifice of performance is largely compensated by the excellent economy & low-mid range torque. There are also kits available that release significantly more bhp with a plug in black box. I intend to go that route when out of warranty. We are a family of five, with all the children under eight years old. There is ample space for us & a ...

Advantages: Excellent design and use of space.Great fuel economy. Amazing warranty. Disadvantages: Reversing vision not wonderful, but you get used to it.
This long version had good leg room front and rear, and the economy of the diesel is great, while having plenty of power. The warranty is truly amazing, you get up to thirty years on inside-out corrosion, and the same for roadside breakdown assistance . If they can't start or fix it, you get tranport, accomodation and more. I rang them up to check it was true! I've cancelled my AA subscription.
The one I have has air conditioning, ABS, four air ... ...alarm and immobiliser.
The controls seem simple, direct and effective. The automatic light-on and off functions when entering and leaving are very useful. Driving is a pleasure. The higher than normal position and good forward and sideways vision help, although there can be a blind spot because of the slightly thick pillars either side of the windscreen when turning.
The car is more expensive than others of similar size, but I've found it's like ...

Advantages: Stylish, eye-catching, unusual, good fuel consumption Disadvantages: Not enough storage space
We've had our A-class since it was first launched. It's stylish and comfortable, and really is surprisingly spacious.
It has been very reliable. We have the auto clutch, whcih is good, but I think I'd have an ordinary automatic next time; - it really is just a gimmic, or maybe for those who can't quite bear to give up the gear-shift.
Excellent fuel consumtion from the diesel model.
The main problem with the car is that there just isn't enough ...

Advantages: upto date technology at affordable prices Disadvantages: very very light steering and rough gear changing 1st - 2nd on semiauto models
I brought a semi auto (clutchless) model for my wife.
it was a cheap little car with safety in mind with 4 air bags Traction control, doublefloor pan so in the event of an accident the engine disapears between the floorpans leaving the legs intact.
I find the car is great for pulling power with endless power throughout the range, only little problem is when pulling away between 1st and 2nd you get a little jerk but the rest of the gears are fine.
... ...place when your driving along, and i've had to replace the trailing arms which is very common. But the car does come with an unlimited milage warrenty. Be carefull when reversing as the back view out of the car is very high so if you can get one with reversing sensors which will save you a lot of money in the long run.
The engine is well compact but is noisy when idleing, for the men though, the power steering is very light with almost no feel of ...

Advantages: Extra Legroom, Great design Disadvantages: Bad reputation for falling over
I think the Mercedes-Benz A-class is a cracking wee car. However, I do think it is a bit on the small side. So I'm relieved to tell you that they have just brought a new longer A-class out. This new longer A-class sticks to the clever packaging of the original but it now has seven inches extra. You may be thinking what?s the big deal its only seven inches. However, this now gives the car so much more legroom in the back that it has more legroom than ... ...CDI common rail engine has been up rated from 90 to 95 bhp, improving the acceleration yet keeping the high economy. Petrol engines have remained as before.
To cope with the old problems the car had when it kept toppling over they have improved the electronic stability programme, ESP, has been linked up with the Brake assist system to optimise braking force in emergency situations.
Safety has become a big aspect of the A-class as well as the engine ...

Advantages: Excellent use of the interior space available Disadvantages: Like driving a mobile hammock
Disappointed that the legendary Mercedes Benz build quality has been sorely comprised in this model.
Poor paint quality, peeling on the A pillars, it's only 3 years old!
Creaks, groans and sways about whilst on the move.
Enthusiastic cornering has the central locking mechanism clicking and banging.
Doesn't like a road surface that is not billiard table smooth.
Cornering is always a challenge, roundabouts can induce sea sickness. There's always ... ..."elk test" have not been entirely effective.
Spacious with reasonable load carrying capacity.
Reasonable performance with excellent mpg on a long run.
Needed the rear control arms replaced at 33k miles - outside the warranty. Cost £320.

All in all I will be glad to replace it with diesel VW Golf. ...

Advantages: Good car for getting from A --> B Disadvantages: Not enough leg room in front
After recently riding in an A180 I discovered that there was a lack of leg room in the front seats. The back seats have plenty of leg room but tall people will find sitting in the front hard. However, the A180 is a good whizzy car that gets you from A-->B easily and efficiently, a friends diesel A180 recently reached 60 mpg which is a staggeringly high mpg for a car. Good for short journeys but bad for long distances. Overall, a good looking car ... ...work and back, or to the shops etc. The car has good features; the onboard computer is able to tell you your average fuel consumption and can calculate how far, going an average speed, your remaining fuel can take you, it has the capability to have a built in phone bay with steering mounted controls and radio dialing ability (using the channel buttons to dial and answer calls). The car is well designed and has great aerodynamics, but the diesel models ...

Advantages: Stylish, spacious, fuel efficient Disadvantages: rear view, turning circle
The car has an amazingly spacious interior, especially for the pasengers in the rear seat and it also allows the transportation of sizeable goods. All this is packed in a compact vehicle, easy to park in the city. The look is pretty stylish and the controls are centered on the no-nonsense dashboard. Fuel consumption is fairly low which makes even more fun to drive this car.
The turning circle is disappointingly large for such a small car and the ...
