Advantages: Lots of admiring glances Disadvantages: People don't let you out of junctions !
...many trips to the local Mercedes garage and after test driving a few CLKs and the new Coupe. The SLK was the only one I got out of with a smile on my face, and it was a big one! So rather than buy one big CLK to load up with miles I bought a 1.2 Corsa for running around and an SLK for nice days.

All in all a fantastic second car. If you don't need more than 2 seats and can live with the running costs it's all you need.
PS - In response to Steve's questions: You don't fall into the passenger seat when cornering, nice semi-bucket seats see to that (although my mum's head hit me on the shoulder when i pulled into the doctor's - for her flu jab - but that was more to do with her undoing her seatbelt and bending ...

Advantages: looks good- sporty image Disadvantages: very small only two seats
...Mercedes-Benz has really surprised me. Mercedes are world-renowned for their brilliant build quality and brilliant cars. The S-class and the CL coupe are terrific cars and can the SLK continue this feat? The SLK two-seater sits slightly lower than before and certainly looks a bit meaner too. However, the car remains very small and a little toy like. Newer engines have been introduced including a wonderful 3.2-lite V6 214 BHP! The old four-cylinder ... ...than in manual! However, the difference is very little. The Mercedes SLK is a tremendous car with a stunning interior, sweet sounding V6 engine and stunning sharp looks. Highly recommended

...reliability, more to do with Mercedes lack of thought when designing the car, I think that they probably blew the budget on designing the clever roof which they co-developed with Porsche. I have a '97 pre facelift model, I am aware that on the 2000 facelift model some of these design issues have been dealt with so it is good to see that Mercedes have acknowledged some of their design issues. However on a car that costs in the region of £30K new, ... ...within the boot. Mercedes have fitted the tweeters in the door cards facing across the front of the occupants close to the dashboard not at them as they should be, causing poor sound staging. This would help as the higher frequencies require directional alignment. On the motorway it can be difficult to pick out the vocals of a track over the road noise.
When it has been raining it is a slow 2 stage operation to open the boot, otherwise water ends ...

...sitting there in the local Mercedes dealer's showroom and following a test drive we decided to buy it.
At the time, this Mercedes dealership afforded a first class service and was a pleasure to deal with, but more about that in another opinion.
What a brilliant piece of engineering this car was with it's folding roof, watching the whole thing disappear into the boot at the touch of a button.
The bodywork was finished in silver with a black leather ... ...Excellent brakes and the usual Mercedes build-quality. An easy car to drive with it's smooth 5 speed automatic gearbox and improved still further on the facelift models with the 'tip function' which offers semi-manual operation.
When driving with the roof down ensure the wind deflector is fitted across the roll bars if you do not like it too windy.
We had this first SLK 230 just over 2 years. It covered 22,000 miles with no problems. One new set ...

Advantages: It's a hard top, it's a convertable. Disadvantages: Running costs.
This is very much initial thoughts as I have only owned my Merc for 3 weeks.
I did own a new shape Nissan Micra but had yearnings for something a little different. First thoughts were for a Jaguar X-Type but the more I looked at them the less they impressed.
Thoughts then turned to a convertable. Ah you think, a yellow one, but believe me it looks fantastic, well to me and that's what matters. My initial thoughts were 'too expensive' but after doing my sums I thought 'well maybe'.
The next step was a test drive. Setting off from home the skys were grey but as I arrived the sun broke through.
The salesman drove the first few miles and I admired the build and quality of ...

Quick review of Mercedes SLK 230 kompressor
What sheer joy! As a girl, even I can appreciate the sleek lines of the body, the exquisite purring of the engine and the sheer lump under the bonnet!
This is a dream car to drive and so responsive. The roof lowers in just 22 seconds with the press of one button! The amazing airscarf ensures your neck stays warm at all times and the deflector keeps all drafts out of the car.
The average consumption of 40mpg is certainly not a disadvantage.
There is nothing to dislike about ths super car. It is a must-have-accessory for all girls in the 21st century! ...

I'm in a bit of a dilemma - should i buy a new SLK200 form my local dealer in the UK for £27500 or get one from Belgium at £21500.
Has anybody had any experience of privately importing from Belgium to the UK.
My local dealer who is Gorners of Ashton In Makerfield Lancashire tells me that the UK Warranty is 4 years parts and labour, however, the UK brochure advises that it is 1 years parts and labour "from the first to fourth year we will always ...

...bought through an official UK Mercedes dealer). On the day we picked it up the roof went down and back up but the driver's door window wouldn't go back up, and the car had to go back into the workshops. This set the tone for the car - it has been horrendously unreliable, more so than a 14 year old MG Midget I once owned. It has needed a new rear shock absorber, a new air conditioning unit, a new "valve" for the fuel tank (also faulty on the first ... ...sounds like a diesel - Mercedes Benz cannot make 4 cylinder engines.
Having said all that the interior is quite spacious for a two seater (and I'm 6'1" tall!) and the boot is huge with the roof up, and bigger than you expect with the roof down. The handling isn't bad (although a Ford Focus is better), and it is really quite rapid in a straight line (0 - 60 in 7.1 sec, 149 mph flat out).
Whenever I drive it I am always aware of the looks the car ...

My experiences with mercedes have been nothing but fantastic, from the showrooms, to test drives and owning an slk has shown me just how good the mercedes manufacturing is. Their quality of craftsmanshiop is, in my view, second to none and i think that this translates into the effctiveness of the car. It is very smooth and thoroughly reliable, serving to make my driving experience very enjoyable.

...surprised at the amount of Mercedes SLK models that were for sale from between £11000 and £15000. I veiwed a couple and 2 days later, bought a SLK230 Kompressor. What a car!! The performance is amazing and ride and handeling are just about on a par with the £25000 (2nd hand) Boxter. Advantages: Superb looks, styling and British Weather resistant. Disadvantages: Seating slightly hard when you are on a long journey.
We bought this car after much deliberation lasting many months. In the end we decided on the manual gearbox, which is absolutely spot on for smooth changes and the acceleration in all gears is superb - also excellent for doing do-nuts at slow speeds, or the traction comes in and spoils it.
The main reason we chose the SLK over other makes of convertibles, was of course the metal fold away roof, which for us wins hands down over all the others and ... ...when closed.
My friends reckon that it is a real pulling motor, which did not amuse my Partner very much, although if the boot was on the other foot, I would probably not be laughing my head off either, although I have not tried it yet - but who knows, if the weather bucks up.
Anyway, just a short resume of this car - absolutely fabulous. ...

Advantages: Smooth engine, stylish interior and exterior, roof mechanism Disadvantages: seats for the under 5ft 7ins, bootspace when top down
I bought an SLK 230 Auto without really thinking - I had driven a couple on hire in the UK and a 2000 manual in Germany and was seduced by the smooth power delivery and the way that the hood goes up and down. Before that I had never really thought of myself as a convertible type person - they seem to be so noisy when the roof is up ( 75% of the time in the UK ). But the SLK is the best of both worlds - it's a coupe and roadster in one ! It's only ... ...shorter than average ( 5ft 7ins ) driver to 'reach' a bit when requesting full throttle or laying a bit back in the seat. The old style gear shifter on the auto is not too nice either but overall still a great package. Having just driven a new CLK55 with the tiptronic type change ( which is now standard on the SLK ) and sat in the electricv seats (which have a better range of motion ) I would definitely recommend the new SLK ( perhaps the 320 ) and ...

This car looks good and fast, but interior dash rattles at highway speed, wind noise high with top up, rear wheel noise also high. No tilt steering wheel on this high price car.
