MSR - No Pandemic But Still Worth Catching

Advantages: Looks gorgeous, three huge cities, near-endless challenges, 'Kudos'
Disadvantages: Unforgiving, difficult, uninspiring cars, 'Kudos'

...fun. To a large degree, Metropolis Street Racer attempts to replicate the formula, but in a much more extreme fashion. You want super-cars, insane speeds and real-life circuits recreated down to the last bump, right? Well, you've come to the wrong place. Whilst Gran Turismo proudly proclaimed that it was the 'Real Driving Simulator', the term is perhaps more befitting of MSR, which features relatively little in the way of actual racing (at least ...
...had reached Chapter 13. Metropolis Street Racer can be immensely satisfying, though you have to be prepared for a long slog in order to conquer it. At first, the tight, winding circuits seem at odds with the encouragement of powerslides and you'll end up hitting lots of barriers and other cars (lucky there are no damage parameters), but gradually as you grow in confidence, discover the fastest lines and shave tenths of your lap-times, you find the ...

You Only Get What You Give

Advantages: Graphics, Handling, Nice range of cars
Disadvantages: Silly Kudos system

When this monster of a game was released back last year, it was heralded as the Dreamcasts make or break game. It had been years in the making, and delayed more than British Rail services, but this could only make it a better game, surely? Well... no. This game has been over produced. It has been killed by the developers over-ambition. It has had so many good ideas pumped into it that none of them have been implemented as well as they could have ...
...selling point of MSR is the tracks you race on. You race around parts of three major cities – London, San Francisco and Japan – which have been designed to be as close as possible to real life. To give you some example of the authenticity and detail, Bizarre Creations, who made the game, took it upon themselves to go out and photograph every object over 1 meter tall, just so it would be in the game. In theory, great. You get to whiz about ...

Faster than a speeding Skoda.

Advantages: Quick and addictive.
Disadvantages: When it rains.

Having just bought myself a Dreamcast I have been addicted to this game recently, hence my lack of Ciao time over the past few days. The package is very slick indeed from the introductory video clips to the level of detail within the game itself. There are hundreds of races to take part in and dozens of different cars to drive. You can take part in individual races or time trials or the centrepiece of the game, the street racing itself which involves ...
...ultimate skill level. There are a total of 25 chapters of racing each with 10 events. These events are split into categories such as hot laps where you have to try to complete a lap within a set time, timed events where you have to complete a certain number of laps within a time, challenges where you have to drive to a set criteria and of course actual races. After finishing an event you are given "kudos" points depending on how well you did. Gaining ...

THE driving game

Advantages: Original driving game and fantastic looking
Disadvantages: nothing major!

...the other platforms and yet Metropolis Street Racer is still the one that I would choose above any other. MSR is all about driving. Well, for a car game that sounds pretty obvious, but it's the way the game is designed to reward how you drive as well as how fast you can get from A to B. Most of the time you'll find yourself trying to impress the game with the style of your cornering and the fact that you don't actually scrape the walls every time ...
...beat the clock or another car. The graphics really do make this game stand out from the crowd. Excellent light sourcing and some fantastic attention to detail mean that MSR really is one of the best looking racers around, and with lovely soft top convertables, you even have the choice of how you want the roof to look during the differing weather conditions and times of day. Ah, yes, the time of day is an important factor in this game, you'll be ...

A modern classic

Advantages: Great gameplay, loads of cars, good challenge.
Disadvantages: A game you 'complete'.

I LOVE driving games. They are without a doubt my favourite genre when it comes to gaming. I’ve loved and played the best: Grand Prix 3, Toca 2, Gran Turismo, Sega Rally......the list goes on and on. Then came this. If you’re a Dreamcast owner it’s very unlikely that you’ve been able to escape the publicity (I don’t want to use the word ‘hype’ here) surrounding this title. In fact, this game was supposed ...
...It was originally going to be out just after the Dreamcast’s October ’99 launch date but it didn’t happen. Months went by and still nothing happened. There were fears at one point that the game would never be released but behind closed doors the creators (Bizarre Creations) were making sure that this game was the best of its kind. Boy were they right to do so. This is without a doubt THE BEST driving game I have ever played and ...

You'll want to take it a step further.

Advantages: Excellent graphics, detail, options, handling, gameplay and just a perfect game apart from one or two slightly bad points.
Disadvantages: Very dark in a few small areas, too many options sometimes get annoying.

This game was a second-hand deely, so i thought it'd probably be a bit off, with some scratches, crash afew times maybe. But it DIDN'T! And i would've been able to tell, because the game is just so perfect, any bit wrong and you'd tell in a flash. The graphics are gorgeous, i cant imagine how much work must've gone into them, but mark my words, it's ALOT! The detail on the graphics and cities is astounding, i own a flat in london and part of the ...

In driving games there isnt usually alot of stuff you can do to the appearance of the car, you can only change the internal parts, but you can have light windows, dark windows, blacked out windows, hard top, soft top and lots more. You can EVEN personalise the numberplate, which comes in handy if you are very cocky like me. You can write 34T T4R and 5UCK ...

the best driving game around

Advantages: Great gameplay and graphics, great game.
Disadvantages: Your social life will competely stop for a few months

Where do I start with Metropolis Street Racer? It's hard to decide as there are so many good points to begin with. Forget the Gran Turismo series on the Playstation. I've played them, then I played this and realised that I had to get a Dreamcast, if only to play this amazing game. At first it seems a simple concept, race around the circuit in a certain time to progress. Then you look at the idea of kudos and all of the possibilities it offers. ...
...imaginary cash or even points for a high score table. You gain kudos by racing fast and driving skillfully around the circuit. The more kudos you accrue, the more circuits you can unlock and newer cars will become available to you. And that's another thing. The difference between the cars in this game are amazing. It's not just that some cars have a higher top speed or accelerate quicker, handling is equally important. It's no good having a big ...

Metropolis Street Racer is probably the best racing game that I have ever played on. It is the most addictive game I have ever played on. Like most other sim-based racers, MSR places an emphasis on real-world cars and realistic driving physics. The graphics are simply superb and contribute to a major part of the quality of the game. You drive around London, Tokyo and San Francisco with each city having three distinctly different areas for its’ ...
...The main mode in Metropolis Street Racer is the aptly named street-racing mode. Kudos (points) are awarded at the end of each race based on your driving skill and style. Being quick to the finish accumulates skill points, and style points are awarded for sliding around corners using the hand brake. Following each race, points are calculated and deductions are made for any collisions with walls or cars. As you accumulate kudos, new races are opened ...

...patterns. It's that good. Metropolis Street Racer, or M-SR, challenges you to drive some of over 40 vehicles through 3 of the worlds most famous cities - San Francisco, London, and Tokoyo. Each city has 3 seperate sections, such as Fishermans Wharf in San Francisco, Trafalgar Square In London, or the fashionable Shibuya in Tokoyo. Each City has been painstakingly reproduced to the most minute of detail. The developers have taken thousands of photographs, ...

Krazy Kudos

Advantages: The "Kudos" system.
Disadvantages: Ordinary music, can be completed easily.

the_junker now has Kudos coming out of his ears... Never before has any game used the word "kudos" so much, if at all. But it is kudos (which, by the way, is described in the game at several points) that goes to Bizarre Creations for making a driving game that melds genres seamlessly, a feat that many attempt, but few successfully pull off. MSR is an innovative little title. With most other racing games, the task is to simply accumulate money until ...
...show off to your friends how incredibly talented you are. With MSR, money is no object. The only currency here is your Kudos, which is calculated to give a numerical value as to how good the unseen crowd thinks you are. More Kudos means more challenges, or chapters (of which there are 25, and contain 10 challenges to, ahh, challenge you) and more cars to attain. And the only way to boost your Kudos is to do exceedingly well in the aforementioned ...

Finally A racing game with glamour and style

Advantages: Great Graphics and Sound, unsurpassed playability, Great Multiplayer
Disadvantages: Doesn't work as well as it should with the offical Racing Wheel

Having played this for a good half-hour, wrestling with children half my age, in HMV I have spent yet more money on Dreamcast games! However, this is the 1st Dreamcast game I have bought which has been a snip at the price. I picked this up for the bargain price of £29.99 from my local HMV (Sunderland Bridges) and from the moment I loaded it up, I realised what a quality purchase this was. This game is structured in a very similar way to Gran Turismo, ...
...by passing tests and increasing your driving skills. All the tracks in this game are based either in San Francisco, Tokyo & London. Although I cannot comment on the authenticity of the San Francisco and Tokyo tracks, the tracks in London are so realistic it's silly! The first few races in London see you race round St James Park and the houses of parliament. The graphics on the scenery are beautifully rendered and really have to be seen to be believed. ...

But anyone will appreciate the graphics and all new features to hit the game. IT has over 250 tracks and some great cars so read on. MSR is amazing

Advantages: Amazing game
Disadvantages: 2 player slight slowdown

MSR is a very impressive game and, from what I've heard, it's selling like nobody's business the game is massively huge and really shows off the dedication of the Bizarre people at BC. The game has its faults - yes it does, but this are outnumbered by the good points by at least 1000 to 1. I'm sure you all know this (but just in case), the game is set in 3 real cities! Tokyo, London and San Francisco, and you actually drive in REAL TIME, which is ...
...now who said the game gives you no sensation of speed? I think it was that Gameplay review - they also said that the lack of a living city (i.e. Pigeons) down graded the game - but to be honest you don't even notice if there are any people or pigeons BECAUSE the game has a fantastic sensation of speed! I bet they only played the game with an above car view - as that makes the game have a much slower feel then when you are right down low close to ...

An indepth view of MSR

Advantages: Graphics, relaism, EVERYTHING
Disadvantages: A few bugs int he initial release, all ironed out now

Bizarre creations, better known for their playstation debut of driving hits such as Destruction Derby among many others made their way over to the Dreamcast console with much support from Sega. Their prospects seemed unimaginable and in comparison to what they had achieved, even on the playstation it was almost considered as a joke. The project of `Metropolis Street Racer` or `MSR` as it is now better known as was only believed when the first screenshots ...
...that they would map every street in Tokyo out as it is in real life, even inserting pictures that they had taken into the final game. Not only that but san Francisco and London were both also promised to look almost identical to their real life counterparts. Rumours started to spawn that if you know your way around London’s busy streets then it would be possible to navigate around the streets in the game, with each mile mapped out perfectly. ...
