Advantages: Easy to use and customize. Lots of options. Disadvantages: none that I know of
I love my Outlook Express! It is the best as far as I'm concerned. I use it at home all the time. It is very user friendly, a big plus for me as I was computer illiterate when I first got connected to the internet. The way the layout can be customised is one of its great features. The menu bar has all the drop-down menus you would expect, allowing you to customise Outlook, export or import mail, and switch between mail accounts. You can customise ... ...You sort how your email is displayed by having emails listed one by one, or listed with the Autopreview so that you can read the first part of the email without opening it. Outlooks option menu lets you deside how Outlook will run. It has different alerts for incoming mail. You can have sound playing or a message flash up on the screen. You have the option to change the size and font type and the color and to change the background color of your emails. ...

Advantages: Lots of features, easy to use Disadvantages: none I have encountered
Outlook Express is an excellent email client. I use it at work all day long and find it extremely user friendly. It is as useful for the home user as the more advanced business user.
It has a nice layout that can be customised to the way that you like it. The mails are listed on one side of the screen and the folders on the other side. The most impressive thing about Outlook is the number of ways in which you can sort and display information and ... ...you can sort how they are displayed in the way that suits you best. You can just have mails listed one by one, or perhaps (as I do) have them listed but with Autopreview so that you can read the first part of the email without opening it. You can sort by sender, so that instead of a list of mails, you get a list of senders and then open them up and it lists the emails from that person.
You can flag messages with notes on them for follow up. The ...

Advantages: Great for keeping email organised. Disadvantages: Has problems with security.
Outlook Express is an ‘Email Client’, this means that it can assist in managing your emails, and is pretty essential is you are planning on reading your email offline, or want to take advantage of POP3 email. (POP means post office protocol)
Outlook Express 5.0 is not the newest version now (Outlook 6 has just been released), however, it is the most popular version as it comes free with Windows 98 and above and has previously been available ... ...of software that allows a user to manage multiple email accounts within one window. It allows the user to ‘download’ their email from the different accounts, to their computer, allowing the user to read and prepare replies offline, not that this matters much now as most have ‘free’ access.
The program offers a wide range of features including; extensive mail filters and message rules, comprehensive automatic organisation ...

Advantages: easyt o use and customise, great help features - comprehensive, easily accessible, office assistant Disadvantages: perhaps the fact that it can keep a copy of all your emails although im sure theres a feature to turn this off
I have been on email since I first went to university in 1998, and Sheffield University use Pegasus Mail client, downloadable from Shareware, ZDNet and such sites for free. Whilst you can download some good quality modern versions of this mail client for free and it serves its purpose very well, it is very grey and boring and when I started using Office 2000 I decided to check out the infamous Outlook 2000 that was included on the CD.
And I have ... ...I had avoided Outlook programs because there had been several computer virus scares which had been associated with Outlook, and I thought it best to avoid using it to avoid the possibility of stumbling over such viruses. But my Outlook program virus-scans my emails as they are received! In this opinion I shall list the features that won me over to Outlook.
Unlike Pegasus, Outlook is easy to customise. At the top of the client is a menu bar with ...

Advantages: Easy to use, Wizards, very customisable indeed. Free! Disadvantages: Insists on whirring with a news server that holds more than about 35,000 groups.
...one of the things that Microsoft insists on installing on every PC whether you want it or not. It's not a bad newsreader, its just there have been so many security holes found in it that swiss cheese looks solid by comparision.
The first thing to do when it's installed and spent a few minutes at reboot configuring and registering itself with the system, is to set your email accounts up with your POP3 and SMTP details so it knows where to go to fetch ... ...is the addition of support for Hotmail addresses (considering there are well over 45 million Hotmail usernames taken, you'll have to plump for something more obscure @hotmail.com). With the Hotmail addition, you can control the contents of your Hotmail inbox from OE and create, delete or move files / folders to your Local Folders disk in OE if you have mail you wish to keep. This drag and drop is quite useful as you only have limited capacity space ...

Advantages: Plenty of features, quick and easy to set up and use Disadvantages: Some improvements could still be made
MS Outlook Express is the standard issue e-mail software these days, and the new version is a vast improvement. It has all the standard features (folders, address lists etc) as well as a few extra usefu features. It also allows you to access newsgroups.
It's now much easier to set up OE for multiple mail accounts, and you can vary the sending account for an email at any point up until it is sent. You can have different 'identities' as well, useful ...

Advantages: Easy to use/understand, pictures/sounds/backgrounds Disadvantages: Not too easy to understand if your ISP doesn't sort out the POP3's and things for you!
Outlook express 5:
Outlook express 5 is one of those email systems that you either love or hate. It all depends on who your ISP is really. If your ISP is one which automatically sets up OE up for you (e.g. BT Internet) then you’ll generally think OE is a great programme. However, if your ISP is some other, lesser popular internet provider then you’ll probably hate OE! We used to be on X-stream at one point and trying to figure out the ... ...understatement either….we never did get our email system to work. The furthest we got was being able to send but not receive emails! Now we’re with BT Internet, the whole email business is far simpler!
I’ll start by explaining how you go about setting up your email account (assuming that your ISP hasn’t done it automatically).
Firstly open OE5 (good start huh!)
You need to open “Tools” then “Accounts” ...

Advantages: Checks Hotmail Mail, Convenient and Quick Disadvantages: None
This is a really useful piece of software, which is really easy to use, as I have some many active email accounts. This must be 1 of the key features of this program, is that I can check a multiple amount of pop accounts and web based Hotmail, all from Outlook. Outlook can be running in the background and every 10 mins of whatever, it checks my mail in all my accounts and notifies me. It's brilliant. It also sorts out which mail, goes into which ... ...Outlook, you can do it offline.
Another Key feature must be Newsgroups. Although I haven't used it much myself, it lists 1000's of different topics to look at and explore.
All in all, this is something everyone should have. (Sorry Netscape users) It's convenient and quick, whatever you are doing. ...

Advantages: So versatile and contains some excellent features if you look Disadvantages: Microsoft have had some security scares in the past
I was particularly impressed with the little picklist that allows you to send e-mail with whichever account you like at the click of a mouse button.
I was also impressed with the MESSAGE RULES which will allow you not only to apply meticulous housekeeping to your e-mails but also to delete undesirable e-mails from a remote server without even downloading it (I put up a full tutorial for deleting spam at http://www.stu-uk.com/blockspam.htm).
I like ... ...e-mail to find out exactly what is going on and you may also cut and paste text from the coding just like you should be able to with a good e-mail program.
The VCF business files are a real treat too - you can attach Virtual business cards to e-mails. All you have to do is to create an entry for yourself in the address book and export as a business card (well cool).
If you have children using the same computer as you, you are also able to assign ...

Advantages: E-mail is surprisingly good considering it's a Microsoft product. Disadvantages: Protocol implementations mean that some services may be rendered useless depending on ISP.
Microsoft have produced another feature-packed piece of software in Outlook Express 5. However, it is not all roses. Outlook Express 5 combines e-mail send (SMTP), e-mail receive (actually collection - POP 3), e-mail storage (IMAP 4), Hotmail integration (MS-owned proprietary web-based e-mail), UseNet news (NNTP), messaging and personality search engine. UseNet news support is very limited. If your ISP has a server that is built to current Internet standards, OE will not connect to it correctly. Outlook Express 5 is an excellent product, it comes free with most new pc's so you don't need to buy it. I use this product at work and at home, at work I have setup stationary that includes our business letter head at the top of every email I send out, this makes my emails look very professional. Outlook seems to come pre-loaded on most pcs these days; it did on mine anyway. I started using it right from the off and its proved to be reliable, quick and easy to use. I still find it puzzling that a number of people that I know who also use a pc, just use web based email instead of this. Sure I also have a few web based email accounts for various stuff like paid emails and the like, but there seems to be some big advantages of using Outlook ... ...1. It readily accepts html emails. Some web based email systems have this facility switched off by default. 2. You don't have to log on to it all the time. 3. Customise all sorts on it for the emails that you send, such as background, music, font, layout etc. 4. It has ready links to your MSN messenger contacts, if you use that as well. 5.
