Advantages: Too numerous to list here if you've got a large PC network. Disadvantages: Requires sys-admins to rethink almost all their ideas of PC OSs.
I could write so much about this operating system that I'd still be going at it tomorrow and the next day, but since I can't spare the time to go into that much detail, let me just make a few key points about Windows 2000.
If you have enough people to look at and take advantage of all the features of Windows 2000, you will be able to reap the benefits immediately; and, although it is not something to be taken lightly, smaller organisations can still ... ...benefit that much will be home users.
The OS has been stable for me from the start (even on a beta release, several months before it was released to manufacture), and back then it was obvious that Windows 2000 provided just what I wanted to run my PC systems on.
This is the way that Client-Server systems should work. The client workstations can be controlled incredibly finely by system administrators, even to the extent that they can rebuild machines ...

Advantages: Stable, reliably, fast and logical to setup. Disadvantages: Client Access Licences!!
At last Microsoft have actually delivered on their promise! Windows 2000 is stable, reliable and works very well, which is quite an achievement for an OS with no service packs.
I had no problems installing it, the only hardware it didn't pick up on its own was my Voodoo 2, which wasn't a problem because I don't play games in Win2000 anyhow.
I had a few problems getting Windows 98 to talk to it but, once i'd realised what the problem was it was ... ...Why, after spending £1,500-3,000 on a piece of server software, should I have to spend another £25 for each computer that needs to access it? Advantages: easy to use, good hardware and software support Disadvantages: not much better than 95, still some bugs
Everyone who had the final versions of windows 95 waited the release of 98 with baited breath. It came out, and everyone rushed right out to buy it. Big mistake. The late versions of 95 had most of the drivers which were shipped with 98, and the early releases of 98 were full of bugs. Sadly, I was one of those people. 98 had a few more features, but most of them you can download as pluggins of the internet. All of the new drivers were freely available ... ...did not crash any where near as much. However, credit where credit is due, the later versions of 98 were much more stable and the system running was smoother. I think microsoft, however, have been just a little unfair. It has released multiple versions of its varying operating systems, still shipping with bugs in the basic software. This is really the problem with buying when it first came out. The ONLY intelligent thing to do with new versions of ...

Windows Whistler is the replacement for Windows 2000. Whistler is to be released in the 3rd to 4th quarter of 2001 (So they say) and is to replace Windows 2000 and Windows ME. This will be a fine day in my opinion to at last get home users off the ageing Win9X DOS core. (A common misconception is that Windows ME is not based on the Win9x core but it is and still has all the flaws that come with it.)
Whistler seems very stable for a BETA version, ... ...redesign like Windows 2000 was. With all the features of Windows ME and 2000 it has become larger and wants a good 1GB of hard disk space to install. Whistler will be released in all the current flavours that Windows 2000 is available in, with the addition of Personal edition. The personal edition is meant for the home user and does not support 3 major things.
1. Personal will only support a single processor where as Professional supports multiple.

A wide misconception of Windows 2000 is that it is the version after Windows 98, but it isn’t. It really is the next version of Windows NT, and it isn’t for home users. It can be used for office networks both large and small, but beware it isn’t for the faint hearted.
You can set up hard disc shares for many users, which can be useful for networks where many users utilise a few computers, making it unwieldy and unsafe for each ... ...also be used to give shares of a fast internet connection to all the other computers from the Network server. But this isn’t very good if there are an awful lot of computer on at once. For your network needs it is fine, but this isn’t for home users, please remember. ...

Microsoft have done it! They have finally released an operating system which meets all the necessities of the everyday user. I used to use Windows 98 for networking/games, then upgraded to Windows NT4.0 (where no games would run), now in Windows 2000 you get the best of both worlds. However if you are upgrading from Windows 9x to Windows 2000 Pro you should be aware of how to secure your system, and how to stop any "hackers" from entering. Many people ... ...and a good setup computer shouldnt need a firewall at all. 1. When installing the OS, make sure that you unplug your network cable for the final section of the install, this is to make sure no hackers can read your data (Windows 2000 doesnt set your security until the very last stages).
2. Make sure the passwords are of at least 6 characters long and consist of both numbers and letters (alphanumeric).

truly the most appealing version yet of Microsoft's operating system. Provided you have the hardware to run it (at least 64 MB of RAM is required), you won't find a better, more serious OS for business computing. If you are upgrading from previous editions, the Windows 2000 wizards are particularly useful; they'll detect all your software and possible compatibility problems before you make the switch. In testing, our upgrade for a laptop was smooth and sure, and all previously installed software was automatically brought onboard to the new version.Previously, Microsoft offered only limited support for notebook users within Windows NT 4.0.Windows 2000, however, allows most recent laptops to take advantage of power-management features, plug-and-play standard, plus recent hardware advances, such as the Universal Serial Bus (USB), IrDA for infrared devices, and FireWire. All these improvements mean that Windows 2000 will run on a greater array of systems. There are some unexpected additions, too. You can also hibernate your Windows 2000 notebook to save and restore your work quickly as you go out on the road. In addition, this new OS adds more support for working offline with data saved from the Internet. (The Windows 2000 version of Internet Explorer 5.0 and Active Desktop, which allows you to access Web content from the desktop, are bundled here too.)Besides support for mobile users, Windows 2000 beefs up reliability and greatly reduces the need to reboot as you update drivers, settings, and the like. Although you can still expect your Linux friends to brag that their favorite OS is even more reliable, the ease of configuration in Windows 2000 and its new-and-improved reliability make for an excellent choice for any serious computer user. Of course, if your business is using Windows 2000 Server on the back end, you will also benefit from easier installation and configuring of software, since these tasks can now be automated by remote administrators. In all,Windows 2000is a great-looking operating system, with a slick visual style, a responsive user interface, and plenty of power beneath the hood. For desktop and mobile users, it's a state-of-the-art choice for running today's Windows applications and for getting to the Internet. --Richard Dragan
