Advantages: Faster than 95, More stable Disadvantages: Can become unstable at times.
Windows 98 is an easy to use and far better than before OS (operating system). If you are a user of Windows 95 and then upgrade to windows 98 you will soon see the great difference in speed and performance.
Windows 98 has many new features than its predecessors and is far quicker and better. I know that today there are many new versions of windows out so people may say that windows 98 is past its day. This could be said as true but if you are still ... ...OS for you.
What's new:
If you're hoping that Windows '98 will revolutionize the way your computer runs, you'll have to wait until the next Windows update. If you're looking for a completely new desktop and interface, again, you'll have to wait. But if what you're looking for is a more stable Windows '95 with better compatibility and a familiar interface, then Windows '98 is right up your alley. One of the biggest things I've noticed from running ...

It is simply Windows 95 in some new clothes.
If you dress a dog up in a dinner jacket and take it to a restaurant, feed it fine steak, give it champagne, its still a dog isnt it?

The main difference were supposed to be underneath. Keeping your system stable and running smoothly was its main goal.
How it failed.
To have it running successfully when it wsa first released was impossible. The machines available then were not powerful enough to take the new technology.
32Mb of RAM were minimum. ...

This program has performed an illegal operation in sector FF0F9283192:023859572717182 as part of WHY-THE-CRAP.DLL. Please throw this out of the Windows. Seen that enough? I'm sure I have!! The sanctity and validity of writing a review on an Operating System (OS) more than 4 years after its first release and during which time it has probably become the most used OS obviously does not make sense.
Windows 98 still remains the most commonly used Operating System (OS), pre-dominantly used by those who use PCs at home. Its no use comparing it with its later versions. I’ll therefore this review as though I’m doing it just after its release…you ... ...upgraded from Windows 95 to 98.

Setup & Installation
The Windows 98 setup is a major improvement over the its previous version. It is much more user friendly and requires less intervention from the user. A major advantage is that if the ...

...It was so crap that Microsoft had to release Windows 98 Second Edition, which fixed all of the bugs and security issues of the first release. That's a great start surely, but wait - it doesn't end there! I suspect I'll be on the recieving end of a few flames from anti-Micro$ofties for writing this. But in all honesty, my opinion is that Win98 is still the best option for the vast majority of home users. That judgement isn't baseless. I spend a large amount of time at both home and university using Windows' main competitor, Linux. Yet, despite all the trumpeting about this supposedly superior operating system (OS), I always find myself coming back ... ...end of the day, computing is more about applications than the underlying system. Does it really matter what system you're using - be it a Mac, a Windows PC or a BeOS PC - if you can type your report and print it out? If you want to play a game, do you go for the system that supports 99% of the market, or the one with the 1% share? It seems a pretty obvious choice. As do most people, I run Windows 98 on my PC. It's a powerful computer, Pentium2 450MHz, 128Mb RAM, so you would think that everything would run smoothly and quickly. Wrong! Infact, Windows 98 seems to plod along at what can only be described as a walking pace whenever you really start to use the system to any real extent. It seems to handle most things nicely, and has a lot of nice refinements over Win95 that make it a far superior operating system. It's the power users who will notice ...

...INTRO Microsoft designed Windows so everyone can use them: from a student to a businessman, for those that know English and for those who don't, for those who had never seen a computer before and for the most advanced users. Microsoft claims they are "User Friendly" and "A piece of cake" to operate. They are. But only the first week. After that, everyone will realize that, they are neither friendly nor easy to operate. And I won't blame Microsoft for that. Every OS is suppose to be hard to learn and operate. Problems will arise all the time. That is natural. The problem is that they go around telling that everyone can use them. That's ...

Advantages: 100% compatible with old DOS applications Disadvantages: VERY unstable, big, slow
Microsoft simply cannot improve a product that is based on ancient MS-DOS. That's the reason they are trying to abandon this system by migrating towards Windows 2000.
The Microsoft corp. divided its OS production in two. The first is for the "professional user" - Windows NT, the second is the well known Windows 9x line, designed initially to keep the compatibility with the ancient DOS and requiring less resources (memory, disk, CPU). The interface ... ...2000 is the best product Microsoft has ever sold (about 40 million lines of code!)
IMPORTANT ADVANTAGE:
Microsoft wants people to migrate to Windows 2000, so there is nothing to do against their will!
There are DISADVANTEGES though: 1. You cannot run programs designed for DOS witch directly access your hardware (E.g. - Most of old DOS based games) 2. You cannot run new GAMES witch use DirectX6, DirectX7 in NT4. This is not a problem under Windows ...

I originally bought windows98 because I needed USB support for my new scanner. I moved up from windows 95 and was initially happy with it's performance. I say initially coz now a year and a half down the line I am wondering if the USB support was worth it! So up to 128 we went and still the memory ... ...free.. I put the memory into an NT machine to see if it was the memory but that ran with no probs and plenty of mem to spare...
Windows 98 eats up memory! It is slow and apart from it's driver support is pretty much a burden... I would love to go back to Win95 but USB support is not available (well not fully reliable anyhow).
For a standard user Win98 may be OK and 'look' nice but I cane any system I get my hands on and it just can't take it...If ...

...I definitely think that Microsoft are the bench mark in computer software. Windows 98 is evident of that. Windows 98 is a good product, but I do not consider it to be great.
