Microsoft have gone into a lot of trouble to stop people from making illegal copies of this software by putting an activation policy into it, whereby you not only have to have a valid product key, but you also need to connect to Microsoft's server and register your copy directly. Installing XP
-------------
If you wish to upgrade your existing operating system to Windows XP, then you can simply insert the Windows XP CD and follow the onscreen instructions to begin the installation. This is the easy way out for less computer literate users!
I would recommend that XP be installed from a freshly formatted drive. The XP CD itself is 'bootable', which means you ...

If a problem occurs with a program etc, your PC will reboot ( no dreaded Blue Screen Of Death ) and send a report back to Microsoft about the cause of the problem and what occurred. ...fundamentally unstable with many bugs Microsoft never managed to iron out. For those of you technically minded, industry watchers accused Microsoft of cobbling together ME from earlier versions, such as Windows 98, by importing code rather than re-writing the system. Windows XP is a complete re-write and overhaul with a slightly modified interface compared to Windows 98 and ME. You have complete flexibility controlling the way your desktop looks, sounds, etc. Microsoft has done a good job revamping some of the Accessory ...

Whenever Microsoft launches a new piece of software it says “this has to be the biggest thing since err…Windows 95,” and yes they said it for the launch of Windows XP on October 25th. The question many people will be asking is whether or not to invest in the rather high price.
**THE COST**

And you'll need to ... ...your pocket at £259.99.
Microsoft is running a promotion, buy before 31st Jan 20002 and get £50 cash back. But the only thing is you have to purchase the standard professional version for £259.99 to be eligible.
**WHY GET IT?**
So do these extortionate prices justify what you will get? I’ve been lucky enough to have a play on my brothers ‘XP’ PC and from what I’ve seen it’s a definite NO! NO!

The only thing i noticed is that during the formatting the installer set aside 8Mb of harddrive space and refused to use it(I know 8Mb isn't a lot but i thought i should mention it just in case others have this and worry about it, it seems to be standard) Once install is complete ... ...supported now.

I waited until several of my workmates had bought and installed XP and asked for their opinion. Feedback was mixed (as the reviews in this section will indicate), but I remember when W95 came out - there was a lot of people who refused to upgrade from W3.1.1 and took many years to do so.
I decided to go for it as I ... ...was bundled with Windows ME - it was so unstable that I removed it and reverted to using Windows 98. Windows 98 is fairly stable but still has it's flakey moments, so I thought that Windows XP would solve this as it is based on the same technologies as Windows NT.
