Many years ago, while wandering around a shop in the US, I happened upon the CD-ROM version of the ever-popular board game of Monopoly. Always wary of knock-offs, I was pleased to see that this was produced by the owners of the original Monopoly game, Hasbro, and decided to pick up this PC version of the game. Remember, this was many years ago, and I believe it cost me all of US $5 and it came with no box at all – just in a cellophane wrapper around the regular CD case. The Installation Stuff: Normally all you have to do these days is put the CD into the drive, close the door and the program ... more

Advantages Advantages Addictive, no board or pieces to lose, choice of game type, ability to customise

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some problems if playing a foreign board (see op)

I’m not a frequent player of computer games – in fact, I only possess three in total for my PC. It is the latest addition to this extensive collection that I wish to write about, Monopoly, which I acquired from streetsonline, where it is sold for only 17.99. In this op, rather than explaining the rules of monopoly, since there are some excellent ops on the board game which do this, I want to show the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing the computer version as opposed to the regular board version. For as long as I can remember, I have loved playing monopoly. When I was small ... more

A CD-ROM of the most popular board game ever hit my PC about a year ago, since then it also hit the playstation! Uncle Moneybags is the narrator, although he doesnt really narrate, and shows you around the famous streets of London, just like the boardgame. This game has been turned into a 3D animated, sound made version. The railway stations have life like noises of the hustle and bustle of the busy station of London. There are the 3D effects of the tokens such as the dog, the car, the iron, the boat, the thimble etc...They too make noises associted to them such as a woof, a horn parping for ... more

Advantages Advantages Intelligent, fun version of the classic boardgame

Disadvantages Disadvantages Irritating music, too many graphics, a couple of software glitches

If you've ever found yourself playing shorter versions of the boardgame version of Monopoly because it's just too complicated to work out all the mortgaging and so on, you'll welcome this version! It's exactly like the boardgame, and it even includes variations on the standard rules, so if you're used to playing a version in which landing on Free Parking gets you all the fine-money, you can do that too. The software includes AI players, and you can play with a mix of human and AI players. This game allows several human players, and there is also an option for playing across the Internet - and ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Monopoly, but on computer

Monopoly is arguably the world's best-known board game; basically it is a turn-based game in which you buy and sell property, build on the property, charge rent to any opponent who lands on said property and attempt to bankrupt all your opponents and be the only one left. Like all computerised versions of board games, if you're just playing against human opponents, you're better off with the board game itself. The computer version's advantages are mainly in the inclusion of computer controlled players and a computer controlled bank which prevents cheating and means you don't have to worry ... more

Wheel and deal with stacks of cash, with an excellent version of the world-popular board game. The playstation version is simple and easy to play. You can have between 2 and four players as a combination of your friends and computer opponents. The board is exactly the same as the original board game, with free parking as my favorite square. You can customize the rules to make individual games more interesting, such as landing on free parking means you collect all previously paid fines, etc. People often give this game the thumbs down, but if you like the board game you'll love this electro ... more

What's the point of a game that you can cheat in so easily? Surely there's no point - well that's what i thouhgt anyway! The first few tiomes I played Monopoly on my PC, i thought it was quite good. You can choose how many people you play against, their skill level, what they start with and most importantly, what playing piece you are! you can choose exatly how you want to play it. I thouhgt this was a good thing at first, but after a while I got greedy and gave myslef all the good things, leaving my oponents with no chance. That's when it got pointless. I was winning form the start and there ... more

If you don't know what monopoly is, then you really should be removed from society or something similar. For you rare few here is the basic outlines of the game ---The plot--- The plot of monopoly is to rule financially over your opponents by buying properties, earning money from rent and other ways and finally forcing them to declare bankruptcy. In the English version there are a selection of properties to buy from the London area including Mayfair and Bow Street. You can even buy railway stations and electricity and water companies.
