Outlook: Brighter, with sunny periods Diamond review

AdvantagesAbout £5.00 a month. Increased "range" between refits.

DisadvantagesIt's not subtle you will see exactly what comes out in all it's glory.

"...stop using tampons. The Mooncup Menstrual Cup, safer, greener, cheaper." It said. Then there was a web address www.mooncup.co.uk and a Brighton phone number. I suppose the Brighton phone number made me look twice, it being the general area of Sweary origin but what really persuaded me to write down that web address was what somebody had scrawled across it, in blue biro. "I'm not a hippy but this thing changed my life." While the sensible part ..." Read review

That time of the month again.... ---UPDATED--- Diamond review Review with images

AdvantagesEnvironmentally friendlier, healthier, cheaper

DisadvantagesMessy

"...warn you. I had heard of Mooncup a couple of times over the past few years - I'd seen references to it at Glastonbury festival and on the odd website, but I'd not taken much notice. Then one day I read a review from a new member (Amber-apple, who appeared to write her superb review then disappeared as quickly. I don't know if she even knows that she got a diamond for her first ever review, let alone how impressive that is.) I was intrigued. A few ..." Read review

*Warning* not for the squeamish Review with images

Advantagesenvironmentally friendly, healthy, cheap

Disadvantagesjust not comfortable for me

"...Mooncup?*** What they say - "The Mooncup is a bell shaped menstrual cup around two inches long and made from soft silicone rubber. It is worn internally and forms a seal with your vaginal walls allowing your menstrual fluid to pass into the Mooncup without leakage or odour." What I say - "The Mooncup is a plastic cup the size of a small elephant, that looks like it might be more at home in the garden somewhere collecting rainwater. You wear ..." Read review

Happier Periods (possible TMI warning)

AdvantagesEconomical, environmentally-friendly, convenient

DisadvantagesNone unless you are ultra squeamish

"...of these questions then the mooncup could be for you. So, what is this mooncup of which you speak? It's a medical grade silicone cup with a stem on it (more on the stem later) which is inserted into the vagina and sits comfortably just above your "lady muscles" to catch all the blood and gunk from periods. It is reusable and with proper care can last 10 years. The cup holds about 30ml, which is an awful lot more than tampons, and can cope ..." Read review

Delighted ? I'm over the moon!

Advantageseco-friendly, low cost long term, easy t use

Disadvantagesmessy and at times awkward

"...eye and forget about the mooncup almost immediately. Then, a couple of months ago, I was shopping in the town when I felt an all too familiar wet, sticky sensation in my knickers. No, I hadn't wet myself, but I had started my period, five days early and utterly unequipped for the event. Rushing into the nearest chemists (which happened to be a larger branch of boots), performing desperate pelvic floor exercises all the way in the vain hope of keeping ..." Read review

Me and my Mooncup

AdvantagesSafer, more comfortable, greener and cheeper

DisadvantagesTakes a few goes to get the hang of it

"...about reusable products like the Mooncup or God forbid for those products to become mainstream? It just isn't good business sense. For this reason women who use and know about reusable products like the Mooncup are mainly women who have found the information out for themselves like I did or who are lucky enough to have a friend who told them about it not who were provided with the information by the media in the usual way we are about products. I ..." Read review

I wanted to love my Mooncup - I really did!

AdvantagesCheaper than conventional methods!

DisadvantagesFiddly, painful, inconvenient, difficult to get clean.

"The Mooncup first came to my attention after I saw a sign promoting it on the back of a toilet door at Glastonbury. Once I returned to civilisation, I searched for 'Mooncup' on google and instantly fell in love with the idea. Safe, clean, easy, environmentally sound - it seemed too good to be true. I was fed up with the expense and waste of tampons - I was ready to try something different. I ordered my Mooncup straight away - eager to try it! I wanted ..." Read review

Mooncup got stuck!

AdvantagesEnvironmentally friendly. Cheaper. Lowers risk of TSS.

DisadvantagesUncomfortable to wear. Difficult to remove. Messy.

"...women, I'd heard about the Mooncup and basically turned away squeamishly at the idea of using a menstrual cup - dismissing it as hippy-happy-clappy nonsense! The idea just has never been appealing to me....the idea of blood collecting in a little cup which you then pour away.....ugh! But my sister tried the Mooncup as she has allergies to the synthetic materials used in most brands of tampons and she convinced me to try it out. I thought it may be ..." Read review

Eco help when 'the decorators are in'! Diamond review

AdvantagesEnvironmentally friendly, very long potential usage life

DisadvantagesInitial cost, Yuck factor

"...what the bejebus is a Mooncup when it's at home?**** A Mooncup is a device that's worn inside the female body at 'that time of the month' to collect the shed uterine lining. Basically, it's what is known as a menstrual cup. It looks a bit like a little translucent sink plunger with tiny holes around the rim. ****Eugh! That sounds horrible!**** That was my first reaction too, mixed with curiosity, but if you sit and think about it for a bit it's ..." Read review

GIRLFRIENDS TAKE HEED!!!

Advantages GREENER, HEALTHIER, CHEAPER AND NO LEAKS!

Disadvantages TAKES A LITTLE GETTING USED TO!

"MoonCup I remember very clearly the first time I got my period. I was 12 and totally unprepared. I'm 32 now, and have spent 22 years dealing with incredibly heavy periods with a combination of tampons and sanitary towels. Leakage has always been a huge problem and until as little while ago, I was simply resigned to the mess and the distress of my heavy, heavy periods. And then I discovered The Mooncup. Well, to be fair, my sister discovered ..." Read review

The Ick Factor Diamond review

AdvantagesCheaper, greener, safer than alternative means of sanitary protection

DisadvantagesPotential for a bit of mess and more hassle, the "hippy" association

"...factor. INTRODUCTION I first read about the Mooncup on a consumer review site not unlike this one ;-) Every review I read seemed to be very positive about the product, and I was interested to try it, so I took the plunge and ordered one from the company's website. I have now used it for two periods*, and feel I have to add my voice to the growing chorus of how great this thing is. WHAT IS IT My Mooncup arrived via the Royal Mail in a ..." Read review

My cup doesn't runneth over. Diamond review

AdvantagesBetter for the environment, Cheaper in the long run, Does not 'dry' up normal fluid

DisadvantagesSome might find it 'iccky', Expensive to buy (£17.99), Takes a few tries to get used to it

"...few days after that, the mooncup did. I boiled the thing on the hob for 5 mins to sterilise. I retired to the bathroom that evening with a latex glove, some lube and my Mooncup. After I'd stopped laughing about the fact it looked like a sink plunger, I tried to give it a go. Getting the thing in was very tricky. Then I asked some of the 'loony birds' on this other website for tips, and they were very helpful. ~~~Inserting Your Mooncup~~~ First ..." Read review

Period? What period?

AdvantagesCheap in the long run, enviromentally friendly, 'easier' periods

DisadvantagesCan take some practice, sqeamish ladies may have trouble

"...first found out about the Mooncup on this website, funnily enough. I had never heard of it before, and to be honest I'm not surprised. Not enough women know about this wonderful invention, even though it has been around for decades, in one form or another. ***So what is it?*** A Mooncup is a menstrual cup. Basically it catches the blood released during your period, inside your vagina, allowing you to carry on as normal, and empty it periodically ..." Read review

Forget the hassle of monthly bleeding

AdvantagesSaves money, long-lasting, comfortable, hygienic, convenient, better period sex

DisadvantagesSteep learning curve, but only for the first few tries

"I've had a Mooncup for four or five years now, and it's the most useful thing I've bought in a long time. Women often get evangelical about menstrual cups, and no wonder. If your first reaction is "yuck!", read on anyway. A menstrual cup is a small, bell-shaped object that is worn inside the vagina to collect menstrual flow. They come in two sizes, one for women who've been pregnant and one for women who haven't. It has a few tiny holes around ..." Read review

Perserverance isn't my strong point

AdvantagesEnvironmentally-friendly, cheaper than disposable products, healthier

DisadvantagesVery "hands-on", not easy to master

"...life! I first heard of the Mooncup on a women's forum on the internet, and after reading all the information on the Mooncup website, I decided to buy one. The Mooncup is a fantastic idea: it is basically a re-usable cup (with a stem at the bottom) made from silicone rubber that you can use instead of tampons or sanitary towels. Because you re-use the Mooncup each month, there are several benefits: - firstly, no need to keep buying disposable ..." Read review
