Advantages: You don't get prosecuted for having none, peace of mind till you need help! Disadvantages: Expense, hassle, not there when you need help.
This is more a cautionary tale about an insurer than a recommendation I'm afraid but it might make people think before accepting an insurance policy.
I am so upset with my insurance company, who had better remain nameless in case they sue me on top of everything else. Perhaps naively I assumed they were there to help if the worst happened to my car, so I could replace it without much expense. I cruised along with this cosy view of the situation ... ...for me? Judge for yourselves.
I was teaching at my regular school (I do supply and have a regular day at this lovely school) and never thought to look outside to check my car. However after school my colleague asked where it was. I said "where it usually is" and she told me to look. Lo and behold, it was gone. My colleague called thge police who asked me if I had the keys. I went to check my handbag. It had gone too. So I had lost not only my car ...

Advantages: It's a legal requirement! Disadvantages: You have to really shop around for a good price
Company cars are great. You don't have to worry about anything. Somebody else services them and pays the bills, and if you crash them it's not your insurance that pays out.
So after seven years of driving company cars I was incredibly ignorant of the whole insurance industry. Purchasing my own car after such a long time was a daunting enough task, but once the deposit was paid on a 2000-model Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a four-litre engine ... ...In these wonderful days of the Internet insurance quotes can be obtained online, but only if your circumstances are straight forward. I didn't have an official no claims discount as I hadn't had my own insurance for so long, even though I'd driven for five years without any accidents. With all the caveats and legalities surrounding insurance I decided that the web was the wrong way to go about it, so I got hold of the Yellow Pages and set about phoning ...

Advantages: A MUST HAVE ITEM Disadvantages: PROOF OF THE PUDDING IS ONLY WHEN MAKING A CLAIM!
In the UK motor insurance is a legal requirement. It is against the law if you use (or permit to be used) a motor vehicle on the public highway without third party insurance - to quote the Road Traffic Act.
I have been in this business for some 15 years now and I realised a long time ago that if this law should ever change I'd be out of a job!
Motor insurers continually get bad press. Quite simply for every 100 satisfied customers there will always ... ...that you hear about because it's more interesting to the media.
In my opinion if you follow these few basic rules, you will not go far wrong!
A) ALWAYS tell the truth. You may save a few quid by telling fibs but you may as well not bother insuring your car at all if you've told porkies.
B) DO NOT make assumptions. Just because you have comprehensive cover this DOES NOT mean that you're covered to drive any car! In fact, you're just as likely to ...

...our (compulsory) insurance for our motor vehicles.
Before I get started, let me state that I’m NOT some raving left wing Socialist, who believes that anybody in life that makes a healthy profit should be put against the nearest wall and shot at dawn. We live in a Capitalist system here in the West, and I mostly go along with that system, for all its faults, as I think that the principle that the harder that someone works, or if they come up ... ...for an accident in a motor vehicle that was my fault. (I HAVE had a couple of claims AGAINST other drivers though!)
~ ~ My unfortunate experience with car insurance companies began when I first went to obtain insurance on my very first taxi, a ‘bog-standard’ standard Nissan Bluebird 1.6-litre. (I LOVE Bluebirds, by the way, and am now on my fourth!)
My first surprise was that it was impossible for me to ‘shop around’ for ...

Motor Insurance!
We are bombarded with adverts and offers about it from all sides - T.V., newspapers, magazines, e-mail and snail mail!
Do we need it? Of course! Apart from it being a legal requirement, often our cars are the biggest investments in our lives after a house. We need to protect the money we pour into them against that unfortunate day when we have an accident or even worse for some, when you come out of the shops laden with shopping ... ...internet, this type of extra motor insurance is not very well publicised, except when you are at the dealers and purchasing your new car.
A search on the internet will provide lots of companies willing to sell you this insurance cover. You may find out that it cost about £250-£400 for 3 years cover. I found that this was a small price to pay for the peace of mind that it gives me for knowing that the shortfall should a write-off happen again was ...

Advantages: None, I suppose they may pay out if you need to claim. Disadvantages: Too many to list, read on, can't pay by cheque for many companies, won't quote untill I'm 17, TOO EXPENSIVE, too many mistakes, stressfull and after 100 calls, I AM ANNOYED
I am currently 16 years old, so immediately you are probably saying, why does this person need car insurance? Well next week I will be 17 and I'm trying to get my car insured before my birthday, so that I have insurance cover so that I can drive on my birthday. I also need the insurance policy to tax the car. My car is a Fiat Cinquecento, M Reg, with no extra security and has not been modified, it has the tiniest engine you could imagine. An 899cc ... ...cheap to insure compared to a 1.1 litre car which are normally common for the first car.
It should be a group 2 car for insurance purposes, but I have heard that this can change from insurance company to insurance company, as they classify cars differently. I am not exaggerating when I say that I have rung nearly one hundred insurance companies!! Yes that's right, ONE HUNDRED! I started off with some of the big names such as the AA, Churchill and ...

Advantages: Absolutely none! Disadvantages: They lied, they were incompetent, they coudln't care less!
This is our story of the incompetence we suffered at the hands of Insurance Express of Hampstead, Birmingham. It is intended to act as a dire warning to anyone considering using this firm. Take my advice – don’t!
In May of 1999 we purchased our first car - a D reg Nissan Bluebird Turbo.
I shopped around for the best insurance deal knowing that the premiums would be high. I found Insurance Express brokers the best and they gave us one ... ...had been driving regularly for many years even though he had not had a car of his own.
When we came to renew in May 2000 - the price was higher than some of the other quotes I took, so I queried this. I was told that the free years no claims given the previous year was really just a ‘special offer’ to get us started on the insurance ladder as it were, and we only actually now had one year as at May 2000. I accepted the explanation and ...

Advantages: We have to have some kind of insurance system for our motoring. It is a legal and necessary requirement Disadvantages: The way the industry generally works at the moment, the customer is caught between a rock & a hard place
Having read some of the other opinions here and feeling strongly about this subject/industry myself, I thought I’d share some observations of my own.
To express these I could use a number of illustrations, all of which I’ve shared and discussed with a friend who is fairly high up in the industry. Needless to say, he has defended himself and his professional compatriots from my comments with the greatest vigour. In the end though, I just look at ... ...can’t really defend many of the industry’s wide-spread practices which to the normal ‘man in the street’ are plain daft and in general terms, often dishonest and perhaps unethical!
I will use just one illustration to convey a concept: You go shopping at the supermarket and look on the shelves at the various brands of canned tomatoes. Depending on what they are going to be used for in your cooking you make your selection. You may have some very specific ...

I am 17 and am on a provisonal licence. I will drive a 1.0 litre Nissan Micra with out a stereo and with a security device. I tried 12 of the online quotes for insurance. The prices ranged from a staggering £1,500 Third party Fire and theft to £2,500 fully comprehensive. I eventually got the price down to a very reasonable £1000 from the AA this had my Dad as the first named driver. I then hear that premiums are said to rise by another 25%. How they ...

Do not settle for less than what is legally yours!
We did not give in, but it has taken 3 months.
I got a new engine at christmas to go into my car. It had never been in a car or run and was at the local mechanics garage waiting to be fitted when it was vandalised (paint and hammerite in the head, oil ways and water ways).
We should have not given in at the start, but they said it would be ok cleaned.
Short story is it was not and the insurance ... ...more. They even said they had looked at the case and closed it.
After more letters and a threat to go to the insurance ombudsman, they finally have given in and are giving us what we are entitled to, a new engine.

Motor Insurance in General (SHOP AROUND)
Let's face it, none of us like the fact that if we want to drive a car on the road we are legally bound to purchase insurance.
Like any other supplier they have to have a pricing policy to enable them to accurately calculate the costs involved and the subsequent premium for the customer. Insurers have to price their policies according to the risk involved in providing the policy.
Prices vary between insurers ... ...Insurers also use a variety of rating features and will obviously have a different claims experience; therefore premiums offered will vary between them. Rating features used by some insurers are:
Colour of your car.
Age of your car
Age and driving history of the policyholder
Accidents claims and losses (it is important that these are disclosed even if no claim was made, as it may invalidate your insurance in the event of a claim)
Make and model ...

Im 18 and a student, so have very little money in the first place. Ive just paid for all my lessons and managed to pass my test...so what comes next, buying a car. EMERGENCY STOP! 'Wrong!!!' before you buy a car you now have to look at home much your going to get stung on the insurance.
I can understand the premiums being higher, after all, im an 18 year old male with no NCB's and apparently thats the worst thing to be, but havent things got a little ... ...Rover Metro, only going to cost me £200 and went for quotes, the first one was £2400!!! no wonder so many people are driving around with no insurance.

Im assuming all these 'No win, no fee' companies that advertise on the TV with people telling us about their horrific storys "I fell down the stairs and was hit by a car at the bottom, ...

Is All-Insurance a company? Well, this op is about car insurance in general, ok?
Buying a car. OK, lets check costs. First, the car itself. Upwards of £100, not bad. Second, petrol. Depends on how much you drive. Third, road tax. Not too bad, once a year and its done. Hmm, that doesnt sound too bad. Yes, but that is without insurance.
For first time owners, insurance is a total nightmare. It is a massive burden, not only on your wallet, but on ... ...car = slightly smaller costs. my sister pays £800 per year for a 1.1 litre Saxo. In a few years, she will have paid more in insurance than the cost of the car itself. Road tax is almost irrelevant compared to this. And then there's the rising costs of petrol on top.
The thing that really makes insurance bite is that if some idiot drives into you and refuses to admit it's his fault, you can either claim and lose your bonus and raise costs, or pay ...

Advantages: Covered my car when no other insurer would Disadvantages: Relatively expensive as such a limited market
When I returned to the UK from a 2 year work contract in France I brought home with me a Renault Clio 1.2 RT (left hand drive) which I'd bought and insured in France. I had not anticipated how difficult it would be to insure and register the car in the UK. So I started ringing round all the usual suspects for quotes-only ... ...until it was registered in the UK. Hours of giving the same details over and over again only to be told at the last knockings they couldn't insure my car. Hang on-can't register it without insurance-can't insure it until it's registered ??? Aaarrrgghh!! I found my way to the British Insurance Brokers Association, who recommended me to a broker called A J Insurance Service 0870 444 3511. Straight away they understood what I needed and set me up a ...
