Speed Kills !! ~ ~ So say the advertising posters for the “Safer Driving” campaigns, and, off course, they are absolutely correct. Speed does in fact kill, but there again, so do many other things. ~ ~ The question that is at issue here is not if speed kills. We all know that you have much more chance of walking away from a shunt at 30mph than you have at 80mph. That’s only common sense. What is being asked is if the present speed limit of 70mph at present in force on our motorways (yes, it applies in Ireland too) is a realistic one, and if it saves lives by preventing ... more

    Advantages Advantages Encourages sensiable speeds

Disadvantages Disadvantages Speed is not the only problem

As a relatively new driver (two years experience), I feel that I should defend those who you criticise as not having the experience to drive on the motorway. I have driven hundreds of miles on motorways, (normally with my dad as a passenger ) mostly towing and feel that people hogging a lane has more serious repercussions than people travelling at speeds that are safe for the conditions. I am not condoning speeding, (travelling above state speed limits) and realise that excessive speed can be a contributory factor in accidents but it is not the only factor. When travelling on an empty motorway ... more

Advantages Advantages Ideally, helps in maintaining safe driving conditions

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Realistically, often ignored

~ For my 100th review, I wanted to write about something I have very strong views on. An emotive subject, one of which has had a succession of extremely high quality, yet varied opinions previously submitted to it, Motorway Speed Limits ~ A friend of mine never speeds! This may seem an unusually rash statement for an opening line, but it’s true. Owner of a pretty modern fourwheel drive vehicle, I can assure you he never speeds. All the time he has been in possession of this vehicle, he has never exceded any speed limit, infact he never comes close.....more rash statements? But, I can ... more

Advantages Advantages A reasonable limit for all

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unfair to the genuinely good driver

Everybody keeps on telling me that speed kills, but it doesn’t. People off on holiday to the great blue yonder travel at over five hundred miles per hour in the big jets and it doesn’t kill them. Fighter pilots chase each other all over the skies at mach 2 and it doesn’t kill them. If you jumped off the tallest building in the world you would hurtle downwards and reach speeds of over one hundred miles per hour but the being killed bit wouldn’t happen until you reached the road below and stopped travelling. I’m not being pedantic or even facetious; I’m just ... more

Advantages Advantages Speed limits are for your own safety more than anything else

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too many people feel that they are above the law

We have had it for years, its been broken millions of times, its there for a reason, so why do we have people with other ideas about it?? I am reffering to our 70 mph speed limit on the UK motoryway's. Its been there for donkeys years now, and to be honest how many of us even think about it when using the motorway? Most of us just sit there at whatever speed fels natural to us, even if it is at 85 mph! So why do we have speed limits on Motorways? After all they are long, straight roads without the normal hazards of driving in a town. The answer I think lies within road safety. How many of us ... more

Advantages Advantages Cars are safer but human design hasn't changed

Disadvantages Disadvantages Go to a speed track

kfingleton wrote a brilliant article on motorway speeds. Although I don’t agree with getting rid of the upper speed limit on motorways (I do think they should enforce the lower one), his article is considered and well-written. I couldn’t resist the temptation to add my own opinion, though. Thank God for Ciao! I agree that cars are designed to go faster than used to, and braking systems are better and more efficient. Technology has made tremendous advances and cars are a great deal safer than they used to be. However, when a car needs a service or needs a part, do we dash off to the dealership ... more

Advantages Advantages You might shave ten minutes off your journey time, if you're lucky.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You might kill yourself or someone else. Personally I'd rather get my fifteen minutes of fame from other sources.

Have you often wondered why, on a three-lane straight road, the speed limit is only 70mph? How is it possible to have an accident on a straight road? Doesn't a 70mph restriction seem ridiculous when the average family car is capable of travelling at almost double that speed? The majority of motorway accidents are not caused by the actual speed. They're caused by mechanical or human error. Drivers who 'tailgate' other motorists are the primary cause of multi-car pile-ups. The recommended safe distance between two cars travelling at ANY speed, is two seconds. As the speed increases, so does the ... more

Advantages Advantages You'll get there faster...

Disadvantages Disadvantages ...to your grave that is!

Great, time for me to get on my soap box again. And if some of you have read the comments I have placed against your opinoins you will know what I am going to say, for the rest of you SPEED KILLS! There are no ifs and buts about this, the issue is not in dispute. If you have a crash at 20mph you are likely to survive, but crash at 80mph and believe me, you will be very, very lucky to survive. I have read the arguments that motorways are the safest place to dirve, and this is true due to a combination of no traffic lights, pedestrians, crossroads, sharp bends etc. Statistically you are less ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I have read a number of opinions on Ciao around this subject, and many people have some very valid points to make. I do believe there is a broader issue at play here. In the UK (and most other developed countries) we have developed a society whereby people expect to have a car each. There is no control over the number of cars coming onto the roads, nor are there sufficient controls over the quality of vehicles and drivers alike. Similarly we have been brainwashed into blaming all road accidents and deaths on speed. Statistically, I am sure you could make anything sound plausible, by applying ... more

Advantages Advantages Keeps iditos from driving too fast

Disadvantages Disadvantages Modern cars can handle well over 70 mph easily

When the first Motorways were opened in England in the 1950s, the lack of a speed limit led to countless accidents that could have been easily avoided if there had have been proper speed limits. They eventually and rightly enforced the 70 mph speed limit we see on the motorways today. But is this limit right for today? Not in my opinion, that is for sure. In the 1950s the motor industry was very different from what it is today. The technical advances made in auto technology would have made even the most forward thinking engineer of the 1950s wonder in amazement. In that age 70 mph was a very ... more
