...challenge: a review of the Mustek 1200 UB. This won't mean much to many of you, but it is, in fact, a colour scanner.
I got the scanner when I bought my home PC several years ago. I do not use it that often, but it certainly comes in handy at times when I need a quick copy and it is inconvenient to go out and get a photocopy.
Let me tell you a little more about it.
The Mustek UB 1200 is a nice compact scanner measuring 21.6cm by 29.7 cm (8.5" ... ...My only criticisms of the Mustek 1200 UB are that it can be a little slow in scanning, due to the fact that it scans one third of the image at a time, and that scanning A4 pages can sometimes produce an image which, annoyingly, has an unwanted black border. This can occur if the original document has been positioned incorrectly in the scan window, but is normally resolved if you place the document in the top left-hand corner first.

...is the review of the Mustek 1200 UB Scanner that came as part of that same package, as I am not too much of a technical person, I will try and explain in plain English without the technical jargon that I feel sometimes goes over us non technical folks heads.
I don’t use it perhaps as frequently as some would require, maybe in the whole 6 years I’ve had the scanner probably scanned around 200 times or so, but I believe it’s a good ... ...for around £25, maybe even cheaper at a car boot sale or ebay, well worth checking out.
The scanner itself does not look of superior quality, it does look rather basic in a light grey plastic, the lid is rather lightweight with a black spongy inner for protection but the unfortunate thing is the lid cannot be removed, which is a bit of a pain if you need to scan something bulky, perhaps packaging of some sort, it is rather small compared to some ...

...with it I got the Mustek 1200 UB Plus scanner. Borrowed the PC repair man from the local IT shop who came round and set it all up for me and showed me how to use it all. (All went well and we married this year, I know it's off topic but sorry).
Anyhow, so I have this scanner. Great! Soon I was borrowing photo's from all my family to scan and have copies of them backed up onto floppy disc's. (Sigh... they were the days! Now using CD's and DVD's - ... ...download the drivers from the Mustek website. Their website is easy to use and any novice can find the drivers just as easily.
Below I have listed information from the Mustek website, as I don't have the manual anymore.

I found this Mustek for around £30 quid, does A4 paper and is USB...perfect.
When I first used it I got the PC to pick the drivers off the disc without actually loading it. No problems.
I had to reformat my computer and made the mistake of installing the disc. Everytime I tried to use the scanner I had a message saying I had overloaded the usb ports, and then the scanner wouldnt work.
I soon dumped all that and put it in the other way. ... ...are probably others on the market that are better, but if you dont have much to spend (or like me and too tight to spend it) this scanner will do very nicely thank you.

I've had this scanner for ages...so long that I can't remember when I actually got it! But this does show that it is built well, as it has been moved around my house to a number of different locations, and been bashed around a bit, and still works fine!
However, even though it is durable, it is slow, taking about 30 seconds on average to scan 1 page. This doesn't sound too bad, but compared to some it is very slow, but for the price you really can't ... ...is hopeless, to test it I printed off some text from Word (at about size 14), scanned it using the software and it had trouble picking that up, it came out with about 3 different sizes of text and about 3 different fonts!
The speed of scan and text recognition are about the only bad things I can think of about this scanner, considering the price. The colour sensitivity is very good and when it is on SuperFine resolution, the scan quality is excellent.

...cannot understand is, how do Mustek sell it so cheaply. Why cannot everyone else? $75 dollars is not going to blast you into massive debt is it? Get yourself down to the shop tomorrow and invest in one of these scanners. The way people put it down and critiscise it all of the time, it may be a good investment. It may be worth a lot of money in the future. Then again, forget that last sentence. You don't have to break the bank to obtain one of these. ...

I got my Mustek 12000UB during 2000 and found it to be a great investment. It cost me less than 40 pounds brand new and is surprisingly good at what it does. It came packaged with a very slick, albeit limited, software suite that includes all the functions necessary to Fax, Photocopy, Scan images and text and an entry level version of Xerox's Textbridge. All in all I do very little scanning at home but needed to have one there for the odd urgent ... ...very few problems. The OCR software sometimes produces erratic results when the original source is not clear - but then I've used top of the range OCR software that does the smae thing. The software does not deal with formatted text, such as columns and tables, but I've devised a few shortcuts to minimise the limitations. The image scans are clear, if a little slow compared to the expensive devices I can access at work. If you have a limited use ...

I originally bought a Mustek 600CP but had problems configuring it with my printer. I eventually upgraded to the 1200UB when I got a computer with USB capability. The scanner was well priced at approx. £60 but the photo editing software it comes with is a bit naff and quite difficult to use. The unit is quite compact at around 14" long, 10" wide and less than 2" deep but the scan cover feels a bit flimsy. The unit takes power from the USB port which ... ...a cover sensor which can get irritating if doing a lot of scanning. The quality of the scans is quite good with a maximum resolution of 19,200 dots per inch with software interpolation. Overall, this is a nice budget scanner but not something you'd use in a reprographics studio. ...

After searching for a couple of months for a replacement, low cost scanner, this is the one that found itself a new home. No puppy dog eyes required! It's light weight and compactness enables it to easily be moved or stored if only using for occasional scanning - great if you're short on desk space. Simple, one lead plug in to your computer gives instant access (no need to reboot). Very quick and easy to do the initial software installation and it ... ...OCR (optical character recognition) - great for cutting down on copy typing and the results are fully editable; plus additional features such as direct copy to print, scan and fax, or scan to e-mail. For the more enlightened user, it does have more advanced control and features when used from within your paint program (ie. I bought this scanner when it first came out at Sears, and it was like $89.99 for it. It was a great price back then (like 5 years ago), but now it's a lot slower than most scanners out now. It is good with scanning pictures, and also documents. Overall I give it a rating of 3.5 out of 5 because it gave me a hard time after a while, and there was no need for me to stress over the scanner. It does not have any features on it. You just plug it up to ... ...the main reason that I was confused when I first got it because it did not tell you that it was scanning - you just had to listen for it to scan.
