Advantages: Covers a modern and important issue fully, great characters

...to expect when I bought My Sister's Keeper: I'd read reviews saying how great it is, but the cover seems designed to appeal to women who like the kind of sentimental 'chick lit' that I can't stand. Or maybe I dislike it just because I'm not a great fan of children. ...for a long time on my favourite's list… I don't know much about the author so I'll have to go and do a little bit of research about her before I continue writing this, nevertheless I do know that I am going to read all her books. "My Sister's Keeper", written by Jodi Picoult could, at first glance from its cover, easily be mistaken for another title in the vein of many of the shocking true life accounts of child cruelty that are currently sweeping the bookshelves of both the UK and USA. The reality is that this book is the 11th title by the author Picoult, and is an (excellent) work of modern day fiction, but yet one which ultimately forces the reader to think about the consequences ... Disadvantages: May not suit the squeamish reader.

...I shall be keeping in my library, and the second book of this author that I have read, although more are on order. I particularly liked the interview with the author at the back of the book, where you get a little of an idea about who she is, and how she sees her stories development. There is also a question section for discussion as in the previous book I read by this author, and I believe that this really does help a reader question the morality ... Read review

Advantages: A tightly-drawn and well plotted story about an ethical dilemma.
Disadvantages: The ending is a little disappointing.

...and it's made me rethink my attitudes in a couple of areas. Not many novels do that. It made me think too about the ethics of using a child as a donor. The child is not in a position to make an informed decision about what's happening as they're unlikely to be able to understand the long-term implications. If you have not read this amazing book by Jodi Picoult then I thoroughly recommend it. But be prepared, it is not always easy reading, and will take you on a roller coaster of emotions by the time you reach the end! 'My Sister's Keeper' centres on a 13 year old girl called Anna. ...many different perspectives is, in my opinion, vital to the book. I feel if the story had been told solely from Anna's point of view I would have spent the entire book on her side. The brilliant thing about the book is it puts you right there in the situation because you don't know who to believe, and more importantly what is the right thing to do. Just to start off, Jodi Picoult did a wonderful job of pulling together science and morality and life and death in this heart wrenching book. Anna Fitzgerald was conceived in order to save her sister, Kate's, life. Kate suffers from a rare form of leukemia and constantly goes in and out of remission throughout the years. Advantages: A compelling, well researched story of medical and family moral dilemmas.
Disadvantages: The American English that it is written in took me a little while to get used to.
