***WHAT CAN THE NEC E313 DO? ***
The NEC E313 is not like any other phone on the market. This one is sort of like a portable laptop in one phone. Please note that it doesn’t look like a laptop, it has most of the features of a laptop.
This big boy can do more than what the Nokia handsets can do. See my list and reasons below to see what it can do:
VIDEO CALLING: If you are the sort of person that prefers to see the person instead of just ... ...the 3 Service and the NEC E313:
SERVICE: At the moment the service is pretty well established. They offer good quality customer service and are very polite at the same time. They will give you the truth all the time. I have experienced this about my bill I got last month for £145.01. I wanted the break down. They said that my bill has been sent out and that I would receive it within 2 hours. It happened. I tried them several times on this and they ...

Like most other users, I got this phone when I joined the 3 network on the 3Pay tariff. i had an old Nokia phone on O2 PAYG which was nearing the end of it's life so I decided to trade it in and get a camera phone. I won't be including a review of 3Pay as thats a seperate op in itself, but I will be concentrating on the phone.
So, first impressions? It's big. It's not the biggest phone I've seen, but it is still quite large in the height and width ... ...not too deep so it can sit in a suit pocket without making too much of an impression. Personally I like bigger phones as you're more 'aware' of them and you can feel them in your pocket so they're unlikely to fall out and you wouldn't realise. On the flip side, you can't put this in your jeans pocket and drive. The length of it means it digs in to your thigh and you'll end up having to take it out your pocket. The only colour seems to be silver as ...

Advantages: Gagets Galore for a cheap price. Disadvantages: Huge size phone, Expensive to top up.
'My God...Its the size of a brick'. That was the very first thought that entered my mind when I first clapped eyes on the new NECE313 videophone.
This was quickly followed by, 'but it’s so cheap!'
Like most Techy's, I love gadgets. So when the first adverts appeared for videophones I was very excited. This was to be very short lived when I discovered how expensive they were.
When Three first introduced their 'state of the art' mobiles about two ... ...under two hundred pounds and that was just for the hand set. You then had to take out a contract, which cost an arm and a leg.
On top of this the whole project was had been rushed and not very well thought out. I have a friend who is fairly well off who went out and bought one of the first video phones only to discover it kept going off as there was very little coverage.
This in mind I gave up on the idea all together and decided I would have to ...

♦How I got this phone ♦
After having my Motorola t192 for about four or five months, I wanted a new phone, something that I could playa round with for ages and not get bored. I also wanted something that was not too expensive, and that actually worked on a day to day basis.
I found this phone while browsing ciao, it came up as an advert at the side, I thought it looked expensive, so I thought id have a look anyway, just too see what ... ...the page for the product its self.
The phone had all of the features that a modern phone should have a camera, video, video phone, photos, and java applications and of course a colour screen. Sounds like a phone that you’d pay a lot of money for, but no, actually, it was listed on amazon.co.uk for £40.00, and it came with free delivery, so I went straight ahead and brought it.
This phone is on the 3G network, so I could call people up with a 3G ...

Advantages: Incredibly high quality video. 3 is, in my opinion, a very good touch on Pay As You Go. Has excellant extras. Cheap as chips. Disadvantages: Very big, but light. Battery life is terrible. Occasionally restarts, or doesn't turn on.
This is the first phone I have ever owned with colour, and the first I have owned with a camera. Because of this, I was thrilled to try it out, and promptly took photos of everything and anything I could. I have also taken loads and loads of videos too.
Now, it is a very large phone, this is true. Yes, it is larger than your average handset. However, it is also the lightest phone I have held, excluding the teeny little ones which you can't talk ... ...down to the massive screen. Admittedly, it could be smaller, but the buttons are also far apart meaning you don't press the wrong key.
Other than it's size, it is an aesthetically pleasing phone. It has a sleek silver body, with a darkish blue line up each side. The screen is surrounded by a snazzy silver border, and there is a rotating camera mounted to the top. There are two LEDs on the body; one on the front, and one on the back. When you receive ...

Advantages: Cheap, light, good colour screen, camera and video calling Disadvantages: Large, poor screen in sunlight, not easy to use
...Which is where the NEC E313 comes into people's consciousness. I was tempted to buy one of these long, light, silver handsets a month ago when they were being advertised at £49, as long as you bought a £25 airtime voucher....so imagine how much more tempted I was when both Woolworths and The Link started selling this handset at £29.99, complete with PAYG SIM and a minimum £15 airtime purchase. Sold!
I've had this handset for a week now and it's ... ...of the technical specs because they're readily available in the adverts and in other reviews, but I will mention every single good, bad and ugly point.
Firstly, the good. The price, as already mentioned, is amazing - easily the cheapest PAYG handset on the market today. For less than £30, you get a well-built, six inch long handset that weighs just over 130g and that has a large colour screen, a digital camera and a video capability. How can they ...

Advantages: Has Camera and Video Disadvantages: Its a Brick
The NEC e313 is currently availiable for use on the 3 network but not mine. I've just swapped for my old Samsung flip phone because I liked the idea of carrying a camera about with me. Its a bit basic as cameras go but as a happy snap its fine.
I bought this last week second hand as I was considering changing to the 3 network but on reading the tariffs I was a bit suspicious of the way it was laid out. Smallest top up card is £15 and you get so ... ...It looked a bit messy and hard to understand. Also when not free you pay a whopping 10p a minute for phone calls. This was making me think twice. I've always known where I stood with vodaphone with its 5p a minute and the ability to top up a fiver when im skint, so I was'nt keen to move to this silly tariff rate. I use SMS ocasionally but do not have the need for video messaging. There are some great deals going on the phones which start from £40 ...

Advantages: Lots of goodies, takes Sony memory stick duo for added storage and putting MP3's on the phone Disadvantages: Not handbag sized
I bought this phone a few weeks ago as my motorola had died, and it was a bargain £35 with £15 worth of credit included plus loads of free goodies (20 mins free video call time and 20 free mini movies).
Ok I thought, its a bit long but very thin and light but does have the bonus of video and camera included.
I rushed home with it all excited and unpacked it,as he I did my hubby (who is not very subtle with his views I have to add) walked in and ... ...a brick!!! And I had not got the rest of it out yet the package contained the brick (as hubby called it) two batteries, charger and a manual the size of a bible. The manual is very good and if you could see it you can understand the size of it, it is very clear and you can understand everything as it takes you step by step through everything giving clear pictures and instructions,
The charger is a bit strange though - it comes in two parts a plug ...

Advantages: Great For Video/Music Disadvantages: A Bit Bulky
I have had my NEC e313 for quite some time, and although the tarrif is a little expensive, it does offer more than my old Nokia 7110e. For example, I've never been able to send multimedia messages, or even video messages before. I live in a remote area, and I can't get a signal in my house on any other network than G3. Although I can't get a full G3 signal, it does offer me the chance to speak to people not using video. Other networks will not work ... ...for something else. But this NEC e313 has so much to offer, that you will be amazed at what it can do.
The screen is large, and easy to see, unlike some other manufacturers, which does eat away at the battery. But if you have the settings to switch the screen off after, say 1 minute, the battery life lasts a lot longer. The maximum amount of time I've had out of a single battery is 16 hour's.
Give it a try. There's nothing to lose on this one. ...

...for multimedia content.
The NEC e313 is also a video and music player. Listen to MP3 or WMA (Windows Media Audio) tracks using the stereo headphones (included), no need to buy a separate MP3 player. You can increase the amount of memory by inserting a MemoryStick Duo storage card (about the size of a stamp) into the slot on the side - you can store over 50 high quality songs on a 256mb card.
Other features include: calculator, MMS, GPRS, Dual mode ... ...games, POP3 and IMAP4 email, audio/video streaming, polyphonic ring tones...
In terms of the phone's looks - many people have referred to it as a tv remote as its quite slim and long. It fits nicely into your pocket and the rotating top means that the camera lense is protected. The casing feels quite plasticy and not very durable, but the excellent quality screen takes your eye off the rest of it.
One of the phone's major shortcomings is the lack ...

Advantages: Lots of features. Video calling! Although it's big it does kind of look good in a unique way. Disadvantages: Stuck on 3 pay which is practically impossible to unlock. Also quite large, bulky and low battery life.
The question I want to answer in this review is 'Nec E313 good or bad?'. So is it worth spending your money on it?
Well, I'm not to sure its great value for money but there are some pros over a lot of cons. This is a phone that tries to be everything. It's packed with loads of features such as a camera (640 x 480), mp3 player, video recorder and video playback. It supports all current types of messaging which include SMS, EMS, MMS and E-mail. It ... ...quite a nice screen which is built up of loads of pixels (220 x 176). So far so good.
Unfortunately I must mention the bad points of this phone. These are it's got a not so fantastic battery life, expensive network (which I will go into later) and according to the many people, the mp3 player does not work all the time. Also there are no games but these can be purchased to play on for 3 days costing 50p. The battery life is meant to last for 110 ...

Advantages: Great Features Disadvantages: The Size
I bought this phone last week and find it quite a good 'big' phone.
You can video phone, take pictures with the built in camera, text, play mp3's (with a Duo Memory Stick), text, browse the net, download ringtones and various other things. Oh, and almost forgot - you can call people as well :-)
The size of this phone is the major drawback, but it IS lightweight wich sort of compensates a little. When you are outside, you cannot really see the screen ... ...on PAYG and it cost me £29.99. I also bought a £15 top up. I think this is great value as it allows me to make 100 cross network minutes anytime of the day or night, something my other mobile phone provider does not do. Because of the high colour screen, the battery does not last that long.
I have decided to use this as a second phone as I am still happy with Vodafone, but when the 3 network gets bigger, I may use it all the time. The only problem ...

Advantages: Very cheap, video player & recorder, mp3 player Disadvantages: Poor screen quality in daylight, very big, battery lasts less than 24 hours.
Although this mobile is a very cheap and technologically advanced choice, it has plenty of downsides to account for the low price. We'll start with the up-sides. Video, everyone loves to have video on their mobile, and for only £30, it's worth it just for the video recorder. It also captures fairly high quality still images. The phone doubles as an mp3 player, so can be used as a cheap alternative to an expensive mp3 player. Large amounts of memory ... ...about deleting old text messages. I now have over 500 texts on my phone, and Ihaven't had to delete one once. There are also features that are standard on most phones these days, such as the calculator, alarm clock, to-do list, etc.
Now the bad points. For a start there's the most obvious: it's enormous size. At first that can be a bit off-putting, but it grows on you. It can be a very complex little thing, it took me 2 days to work it out completely ...

NEC are not really leaders in the field of mobile phones. Sure, they make lovely electrical goods but they should have left mobility to the big boys; to those with the experience of designing phones that are ergonomic and simple to get the hang of.
From the button layout where the keys for dial, hangup (cancel) and back up are set immediately above 1,2 and 3 without any difference in feel or look to the clunky contacts ... ...Having used Nokias, Motorolas and Ericssons the NEC was completely disappointing.
