I`LL GET MY KICKS – ON ROUTER £66

Advantages: Ultra simple to set up, Compact slim design
Disadvantages: Pitiful length of Ethernet cable supplied

...find myself writing about the Netgear ADSL Firewall Router DG834 thanks to my Sister asking me to set up a network on her two computers so that her AOL broadband connection could be shared. Of course therein lay the first issue, AOL is not like other ISP`s in that it has up to now been impossible to sign on with more than one screen-name, but thanks to AOL finally embracing the whole Networking ethos and offering support to a handful of routers there ...
...for I settled on the Netgear DG834 because it seemed to offer the best features at a reasonable price. However, rather than buy it from the AOL recommended retailer for £89.99 I did a little price comparison work and chose Simply.co.uk who were offering the same product for £28 less – always worth shopping around then! ♦What’s in the box?♦ A couple of days later the router arrived and I could finally start to setup the network. Included ...

...of 8. Overall I found this Netgear product brilliant. I chose this based on the brand being well known and praise elsewhere. It's very easy to use, good looking and has caused me no problems in what I wanted to acheive: succesfully sharing 2Mb between two computers. Highly recommended! ...

Top quality product

Advantages: Very high spec for the price
Disadvantages: Instruction manual very poor

I read the other review of this and thought it was excellent. I would like to add a couple of points. Firstly, I have bought mine quite recently and it is version 2. I don't know the exact dimensions of the earlier one but this is minute. It is about the same size as an average hand, i.e. 6" by 4". It's also very lightweight and you can stand it on end if you want with the supplied widget. It's also a white colour. I paid around £60 for this and ...
...more. However the other computer in the house is quite a long way from this one and on a different floor with several walls in between. So I decided that wired was best if I decided to connect them up. You can't really tell if wireless will work untill you try. I bought this one from NickKnows.co.uk and I also ordered 4 extra budget filters at £2.94 each. They work fine and it's probably not worth spending £10 on the high grade ones. You get one ...

Suitable for anyone, a great router all round.

Advantages: Very simple to use
Disadvantages: 1 short Cat5 cable

...out what went where as Netgear rather cleverly colour coded everything on the router - the grey cable goes into the grey hole, and the yellow cable goes into (rather unsurprisingly) the yellow holes. I say holes, as another great feature is that you get 4, yes, 4 ports so you can easily set up a home network using this. Once I had everything assembled (which took me about 30 minutes - 20 of which were spent trying to sort out the spaghetti of wires ...
...the CD into the drive. Then I read the instructions. Fortunately I had indeed got everything right. Following the on-screen prompts I inputted my Broadband ID and Password, waited a few moments and VOILA! We were connected. Because you are networked through the router it serves as an effective firewall, meaning that your computer is never detected on the internet - the network stops at the router. So this is really a multi-talented bit of kit. ...

DG834: The Pros & My Significant Cons

Advantages: Possibly the perfect wired home router?
Disadvantages: Potentially none, but check the review...

...Another reason for buying a Netgear router is the ridiculously easy set up, the web interface is generally excellent. No problems running the unit with either Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux. Both operating systems are happy to share the internet connection simultaneously. Interestingly, web pages seem to download significantly faster than they did when using a USB modem. This may be because it connects to the PC via Ethernet instead of USB, but it is ...
...Overall I would rate this product very highly, but there is, for me, one very big blot on its record. Periodically the device will drop the internet connection and stubbornly refuse to reconnect unless it and/or the PC are rebooted. Having searched around on the internet this seems to be a notable fault; the device connection status alternately reports "LCP down" "LCP is allowed to come up", seemingly stuck in some endless loop. In many cases a replacement ...

Outstanding piece of kit

Advantages: a reasonable price would normally cost hundreds of pounds - suitable for any users
Disadvantages: You only get one splitter/microflter in the box - very minor

...I read all about the Netgear DG 834 on several well known review sites before buying, and it was consistently the most highly rated by users and techies alike. Like most people, the biggest factor was price. To get the 3 separate pieces of hardware offered here in one box here (a modem a router and a firewall) would normally cost hundreds of pounds. The second thing that attracted me to it was the comments by people on how easy it was to set up. ...
...below). I was also very impressed by how it seemed to do EVERYthing and all for what I think is quite a reasonable price. I got my broadband connection quite cheaply on the basis that I would set it up myself, and buy my own hardware. So this litte box has really saved me money. With this package, you get a modem, AND a firewall (very important if you have broadband so that people can't attack your PC and "leach" off of your connection). What is ...

The perfect router for your home or small office

Advantages: Multiple features, looks, simplicity
Disadvantages: Needs rebooting occasionally (but what doesn't?)

Like others have said this is a good, all round router with inbuilt ADSL modem and firewall. If you want to connect multiple computers in your house or small office, this router is something you should definetly consider. It's sleek and slim, very attractive and sits neatly on your desk or out of the way, depending on where you'd like to put it. The lights on the front can be a bit irritating if you've got the router nearby but this isn't too bad ...
...case if you happen to find yourself working in dim light, but otherwise I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the frontal lights. They're OK! The control panel from the router, which you can log in to via a local IP address is easy to use although I would have liked more security options and settings but you can't complain for the price. It does need rebooting occasionally (especially if you keep the router on at all times). If you get the chance ...

Simply the best router around

Advantages: Again, very high spec for the price. VERY reliable
Disadvantages: Keeps you in the dark about some aspects of setting the device up

Netgear have built a very good reputation when it comes to networking hardware, and this is a very good example of their high quality products. I bought this item two years ago for 6 computers in a house I was renting. The router was used 24/7 and did not crash once, or even show any signs of any problems whatsoever. There is one improvement that Netgear could make however. This is in the manual. It is very useful for the initial setting up stages, ...
...having to alter settings for the router i.e. how to stop the router from blocking certain programs you are running. As the price has gone down to around £60, I could not recommend this product enough. You simply will not find any better router out there. If you want a wireless router, get the wireless version of this router. I have used one of these as well, and is just a reliable. ...

Great for New Broadband Users

Advantages: Great Firewall Protection, Easy To set-up
Disadvantages: None

Having moved away from home (and the comfort of my home wireless network) Not wanting to go wireless due to problems in the past, I needed a ADSL Firewalled Router, so a quick check at Dabs reveiled this little beauty, not only is this a great looker, but it does its job fantastically. This product acts as a 4 port Switch as well as a ADSL Modem, it has a double Firewall, which i don't really understand but it seems to keep the nastys out. Great ...
