4 Stars I`LL GET MY KICKS – ON ROUTER £66 Review with images 30/11/2004
    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Ultra simple to set up, Compact slim design

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pitiful length of Ethernet cable supplied

Or rather not quite £66, more like £61.99 – but then I wouldn’t have been able to pun on the famous Rolling Stones track in the title and that would have been an opportunity missed! So what is a router? And why am I writing a review about one? Well, a router is used when you want to share an internet connection between two or more computers, and I find myself writing about the Netgear ADSL Firewall Router DG834 thanks to my Sister asking me to set up a network on her two computers so that her AOL broadband connection could be shared. Of course therein lay the first issue, AOL is not like other ... more

    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Inexpensive, easy setup, fast and reliable

Disadvantages Disadvantages More wires, no mobility (but upgradable)

With 1 computer, a single user ADSL modem is all you need to get connected to broadband. Hell, nearly all ISP's give 'em away! But if you want more than one computer to share that connection you will likely have to approach a shop and open your wallet. One product you can swap your cash for is the well regarded multi feature, wired-solution DG834 from Netgear. This little white box (like many of their of their little boxes) packs in it's case an ADSL modem (so go and put your existing one up on eBay!), a router, a switch, and firewall (for business strength style protection from hackers). This ... more

Advantages Advantages Very high spec for the price

Disadvantages Disadvantages Instruction manual very poor

I read the other review of this and thought it was excellent. I would like to add a couple of points. Firstly, I have bought mine quite recently and it is version 2. I don't know the exact dimensions of the earlier one but this is minute. It is about the same size as an average hand, i.e. 6" by 4". It's also very lightweight and you can stand it on end if you want with the supplied widget. It's also a white colour. I paid around £60 for this and could have got the DG834G (wireless) model for about £15 more. However the other computer in the house is quite a long way from this one and on a ... more

Advantages Advantages Very simple to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages 1 short Cat5 cable

I had a number of problems using my USB modem (A Voyager 105) and after about the billionth Blue Screen crash, decided to bite the bullet and change to a wired modem/router through an Ethernet connection. A friend of mine had one and gave nothing but praise for it so I went off and checked other reviews and it seemed to get glowing feedback. After looking through a number of sites for the best bargain I decided on Amazon. It cost me a total of £47 and a few pence, and I qualified for free delivery. This appeared to be the cheapest around by at least £2. When I opened the box I did the usual ... more

Advantages Advantages Possibly the perfect wired home router?

Disadvantages Disadvantages Potentially none, but check the review...

I decided to move from a USB DSL modem so that I would be able to use an old desktop as a web server from home. Having previously borrowed a wireless router and having had nothing but grief I decided to go the wired route. In an effort to keep down costs my mission was to find the cheapest available modem router. In the end convenience won over price and I bought from a supplier just down the road - £44.95, still, not bad... Another reason for buying a Netgear router is the ridiculously easy set up, the web interface is generally excellent. No problems running the unit with either Windows XP ... more

Advantages Advantages a reasonable price would normally cost hundreds of pounds - suitable for any users

Disadvantages Disadvantages You only get one splitter/microflter in the box - very minor

recommend this MOST highly to amateurs and experts alike! I read all about the Netgear DG 834 on several well known review sites before buying, and it was consistently the most highly rated by users and techies alike. Like most people, the biggest factor was price. To get the 3 separate pieces of hardware offered here in one box here (a modem a router and a firewall) would normally cost hundreds of pounds. The second thing that attracted me to it was the comments by people on how easy it was to set up. I can now confirm this (as described a few lines below). I was also very impressed by how it ... more

Advantages Advantages Multiple features, looks, simplicity

Disadvantages Disadvantages Needs rebooting occasionally (but what doesn't?)

Like others have said this is a good, all round router with inbuilt ADSL modem and firewall. If you want to connect multiple computers in your house or small office, this router is something you should definetly consider. It's sleek and slim, very attractive and sits neatly on your desk or out of the way, depending on where you'd like to put it. The lights on the front can be a bit irritating if you've got the router nearby but this isn't too bad and other routers are worse culprits. This is more the case if you happen to find yourself working in dim light, but otherwise I wouldn't put too ... more

Advantages Advantages Again, very high spec for the price. VERY reliable

Disadvantages Disadvantages Keeps you in the dark about some aspects of setting the device up

Netgear have built a very good reputation when it comes to networking hardware, and this is a very good example of their high quality products. I bought this item two years ago for 6 computers in a house I was renting. The router was used 24/7 and did not crash once, or even show any signs of any problems whatsoever. There is one improvement that Netgear could make however. This is in the manual. It is very useful for the initial setting up stages, but leaves you in the dark when it comes to having to alter settings for the router i.e. how to stop the router from blocking certain programs you ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Firewall Protection, Easy To set-up

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Having moved away from home (and the comfort of my home wireless network) Not wanting to go wireless due to problems in the past, I needed a ADSL Firewalled Router, so a quick check at Dabs reveiled this little beauty, not only is this a great looker, but it does its job fantastically. This product acts as a 4 port Switch as well as a ADSL Modem, it has a double Firewall, which i don't really understand but it seems to keep the nastys out. Great Product, would recommend for anyone that need to have a PC and Laptop Set up over one broadband connection but doesn't need the hassle of wireless ... more
