NME Is The One For Me

AdvantagesVariety of contents, good price

DisadvantagesIt is what it is, cannot 'dis it'

"...into music, so I thought NME would be a good choice. I believe that NME is the main music magazine since the departure of Melody Maker, along with of course, Kerrang! By the way, NME is ‘New Musical Express’. There is usually one main feature in the magazine such as the Miami Dance Conference of last week, and Missy Elliot the week before as she has a new album out soon. The main feature is really just there to attract the buyer ..." Read review

FIFTY YEARS OF SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK 'N' ROLL

AdvantagesIs Cheap As chips;)

DisadvantagesSee Op

"...weekend! I eventually settled upon NME Magazine. Being a follower of the more alternative music scene such as Limp Bizkit, New Found glory, Puddle of Mudd, Drowning Pool and the sort I set out to the newsagents to get a magazine focusing on this type of music. My first thoughts were immediately focused on ‘Kerrang’ as this is the music channel I most frequently watch. BUT....having read my friends collection of the past 4 weeks or so I saw that ..." Essential Music News

AdvantagesWeekly. Authorative music news and reviews

DisadvantagesNone to speak of

"...Maker and also Select, the NME is really only the serious choice of publication for quality music news. Melody Maker and NME were always published in the same building at IPC, therefore I suppose a merger was on the cards. I cannot comment on Select as I had not read it for over year. Anyway I digress. The NME as you may or may not know is published every Wednesday, but Lucky Londoners get the latest Music news every Tuesday. This is a ..." Read review

Simply a great mag

Advantagescheap, interesting, reviews, gig guide

Disadvantagesadvertising

"...of the better ones. The NME which originally started out as a printed newspaper many decades ago has developed to become one of the most popular glossy music magazines available. Partly due to its choice a few years ago to follow mainly \"indie\" music which has paid off due to its recent flourish of popularity. A typical NME is 70 to 80 pages long and packed with reviews of CD\'s, DVD\'s and concerts as well as interviews with bands and solo artists. ..." Read review

Gobbledygook for the Masses

Advantagesgig listings, decent news section

Disadvantagesprice, content, style

"...sarcasm, and exaggeration became the NME writing style, and still is today. This manages to set it apart from the crowd. Edging ever closer to the teen-pop weekly format the mag is now fully coloured and glossy print. It's highly advertised and pretty steeply priced as well to be honest, at £2.10. Nonetheless sales continue to increase with the rise of indie/alternative music in the mainstream. Personally I believe this factor is threatening to ruin ..." Read review

No Musical Education

AdvantagesCrossword, some god writers

DisadvantagesIncreasingly tabloid

"Somehow NME has survived as the other weekly music papers have slowly disappeared into the ether. I have never historically been a great fan of NME, preferring Melody Maker and Sounds in the glory days of the late 80’s. However as Sounds disappeared and MM went into terminal decline I began to read NME on a more regular basis. Not really because I wanted too, but because the competition was not there and I needed my weekly music news fix. So ..." Read review

Well Worth A Read

AdvantagesFull of information on gigs and reviews, cheap price

Disadvantagesreviews sometimes seem biased

"...is playing where and when, NME is the place to look.. The magazine also offers exclusive interviews with amongst the top artists in the world, rivalled only in the UK by the likes of Q.. In addition to this, the music news is highly up to date and covers everything from gossip to who is releasin an album when.. NME also prints charts, both from the UK top 40, but also the Independent label top 40 which makes extremely interesting reading. However.. ..." Read review

It aint your Enemy...

AdvantagesLot's of features and enjoyable to read

DisadvantagesCan be a little biased on most occasions...

"I have been reading NME (New Musical Express) for roughly 2 1/2 years now and I have to say I have enjoyed reading it. The magazine itself is aimed at a certain audience; music lovers of the genre 'Indie' and mainly students. In the past 3 years bands such as The Libertines, Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, The Strokes and now the Arctic Monkeys have all been regulars throughout the magazine. NME also looks at British hiphop on a few occasions such as British ..." Read review

NME, friend or enemy

AdvantagesLots of indie/rock. Very up to date news.

DisadvantagesOpinionated and biased.

"...an avid reader of the NME for a year or so now, I've decided it's high time I put my opinion on the music rag out to air. With the demise of Melody Maker, NME is the last remaining music weekly to cover all genres of music. However, it's began to concentrate mainly on Indie and Rock with the occasional R n B/dance feature (which suits me fine!) What you're presented with is a nice, friendly glossy front cover with various headline screaming ..." Read review

NME A poor guide to Reading

AdvantagesCheap and weekly

DisadvantagesBiased, poor reviewing quality

"...of Reading so I thought NME might have something better too offer. My god what a load of rubbish. The review of Reading and Leeds was best described as dreadful. The reviewer obviously had no idea about half the bands he was reviewing, and had enter the festival with an indie biased opinion. He skipped through many of the alt rock bands describing them as cr*p etc etc without explaining why or how he came too this conclusion. It was one review though ..." Read review

the best music mag

Advantages

Disadvantages

"This has to be the best music magazine around. Every week it is packed with the latest news - which it can keep up with since it come out every week on Wednesday - and great interviews with all the top bands. It also does reviews of new albums and singles and has a great gig guide and gives you an opportunity to express you're opinion in Angst. The reviewers are also clearly not scared to express their opinion and tell it exactly how it is which is ..." Read review

Now Musical Enemy

Advantagessee text

Disadvantagessee text

"...Kerrang and Metal Hammer. NME was the lighter alternative option. Now it is like a lucky dip - whether or not you get interviews on pop groups or metal bands. It is quite expensive - £1.30 - especially as it is just a paper! I really only buy this paper if I have been informed previously that there is going to be a feature on one of my faves in it. Then again, most alternative bands now get a slating from then and the journalism is poor, so is ..." Read review

NME Magazine - A good read as ever!

AdvantagesGreat reviews and interviews, also very funny.

DisadvantagesCan have the odd bad week.

"The NME is a magazine often hated by the people they rave about: the 'scenesters' who regard it to be too popular to fit in with an ever growing underground music scene in the UK. Of course, it is very popular, and it is hard to keep up at times, but the NME is still the best music magazine in this country. And the reason is it's attention to detail, it's weekly format making it on the ball of where to be and who to be with that particular week, and ..." Read review

The almighty NME...?

AdvantagesIt is good for music news and it's weekly, so thats good, but...

DisadvantagesIt's too biased

"... However, here my applause for NME turns into boos and hisses because friends, I feel I must criticise NME for becoming a bit too big for its boots. I hate the way it endorses drug taking (call me a prude, I don't care!) and the way it ever-so-humorously (not) assumes all band members have the same surname as their band (Pete Libertine, Marcie Von Bondie, and Ritchie Manic being notable examples). However the thing I hate most about NME is the way ..." Read review

For those with musical tastes other than pop

AdvantagesGives an alternative to pop

DisadvantagesIs the only alternative

"...not in the charts. The NME (New Musical Express) has been going for many decades, and is one of the foremost music magazines in the UK. The NME is really the only choice for those who despise pop and like a taste of the chart-risqué. Sadly, since the Melody Maker was enveloped by the NME, it is the only alternative for music consumers and so now commands a monopoly position as to recommendations. I've always read the NME, it's a fairly good ..." Read review
