...to my satisfaction with our NTL Telephone and Digital TV Service, we decided to change our Broadband provider.
We had been unhappy with Supanet for some time (see previous review) and therefore NTL seemed the natural choice. However, I didn't enter into the decision lightly - the last thing I wanted was for us to be stuck with another under achieving Broadband supplier and so I looked into what NTL could offer me and took the time to understand ... ...looked into NTL Broadband via their website, ntl.co.uk. Before viewing the Broadband options available to you, you must enter your Postcode to ensure that Broadband is available in your area. Once you have done this, you are then able to view the Broadband packages that NTL currently offer.
There are currently 3 Broadband options available:
1mb Broadband Internet - £9.99 per month (Usually £17.99)
2mb Broadband Internet - £24.99 per month

While this op is about their broadband provision, I shall give you a brief outline of what finally swayed me.
For those who don’t know, NTL offer various Broadband options for residential customers, namely:

...I vowed never to use NTL again after being driven to distraction by the shortcomings of their phone-service.
Annoyed by constant telephone queues and the apparant inability of their staff to resolve simple queries without making more of a mess, I toddled off back to BT, never to see NTL again.
Having moved to a new house, and wanting to get broadband in one form or another, I contacted BT only to find that ADSL wasn't available here - despite being ... ...changes to this exchange because NTL have cabled up all the streets.
This I found quite incredible given that this would be a really good area for ADSL take-up (a heavily populated suburb outside Leeds) but in fairness to them it's good that they're concentrating on areas where there is no other broadband alternative, so that overall as many people can get hooked up to BB as possible.

...Our neighbour was already on ntl so I looked into the price and found them competitive. As he had no major problems I decided call ntl and agree the contract.
The offer at the time was free installation, which involved connecting to the underground cable under the pavement outside. (There is a little ntl metal grate set into the tarmac).
The cable runs along the side of the house attached to the brickwork, just above the foundation liner.
The ... ...house and plugged into the ntl supplied broadband modem. Then you could use either a USB or ethernet cable to connect the modem to the PC,
ntl also supplied the CD to install the necessary software, and again this was simple, just following the step by step instructions in a short manual and on screen.

...based on 100% experience with NTL from the dial-up age through the current broadband revolution and as a previous and current customer of their TV and telephone services.
I first used NTL for the completely free (and it was completely free) dial-up service they offered way back in 1999. Although this service led to their near bankruptcy, it was a good service. Then, in the year 2003 I switched to their broadband service. At the moment I have their ... ...bad, really. I briefly used NTL for my TV service provider as well but it got to expensive. After briefly using Freeview, I changed again for reasons told later on in the review. I'll go through my experiences with this new broadband thing now.

This review will be about NTL Broadband, NTL themselves; my technical failings of that there are many and the faffing about I’ve had with them trying to find information out. You need some background information on my lack of home PC use firstly to understand the lack of technical words mentioned; I like to keep things simple!

There are 2 main ways to connect to the internet with ntl:home broadband
1) thru a Set Top Box (the box that makes it possible to view digital cable channels)
2) via a cable modem (an external modem connected to the ntl network via an omnibox)(the omnibox is the small brown box situated on the outside of the house!)
The best thing in a set top box is the cable modem (which also makes it possible to browse the ... ...line)
With ntl broadband yu have 3 options for your connection speed:
150Kbps - for the average user, not too many downloads ata cost of £17.99 per month,
600Kbps - Ideal if you download a lot of MP3s, costing £24.99 per month,
1Mbps - until recently the fastest broadband conection available in th U.K., its ideal for on-line gamers and costs £34.99 per month.

However I like to leave my computer connected to the internet 24/7 and this of course tied up my phone line. As well as this, dial-up is slow and I wanted to use my computer as a DNAS server (this allows you to transmit internet radio amongst other things) and with dial-up this simply was not possible.
So I made a decision that broadband ... ...So I phoned up NTL and asked for the 128k service (don’t worry, my mum - the bill payer had to confirm it first). They said it would be £25 for the installation kit but i would get the first month free (so the installation kit worked out at only £10). Three days later the installation kit arrived (i did not mind the wait as i had dial-up). The installation pack contains the following:

Advantages: Always on, quicker than 56k, fairly constant speed, allows some streaming content. Disadvantages: Slower than "true" broadband, downloads not lightning fast, connection can drop sometimes for no reason.
...Having converted from BT to NTL the previous year, mainly for the £9.99 a month unlimited 56k access, the decision was made to stick with NTL, as we had not experienced any problems with their service, despite some of the horror stories that had surfaced regarding their customer service, or rather, the apparent lack of it.
Taking advantage of the promotional offer of the day, we phoned NTL and arranged a date for the installation of our new internet ... ...the product and service from NTL have been of a high quality, and for a very reasonable price (spending less now than when I was on Freeserve Pay As You Go in the period around 1999/2000). ...I received a letter from NTL just the other day containing some rather bad news. They are axing their 64k cable modem service. I have only had this service for one year and was really disappointed by the news as it offered excellent value for money. Well were else could you get an always on 64k connection for just £6 per month? They have left me with four choices; 1. Upgrade to their 128k cable modem service (£14.99 per month) 2. Switch to their ... ...does. This is because the NTL 128k cable modem service costs £1 less per month and is considerable faster than a 56k dial up connection. Other advantages are it does not tie up the phone line and there is an “always on connection”. I hope I have as happy surfing with the new 128k service as I did with the 64k and that NTL don’t cancel it after one year. If they do I will start looking around for other ISP’s and I assume so ...

NTL Broadband is provided by the cable company NTL and as such is only available in certain geographical areas.

* NTL provide one of several pieces of equipment (their discretion), which can be leased if you can't or don't want to afford the £150 up-front. They all support Ethernet and USB, so older equipment can be connected by buying a £10 network card if you don't already have one. Ethernet is the "correct" way to connect a networking device, and performs much better than USB. To add to that, it means that you could plug in any ... ...pay for dial-up!
***UPDATE*** NTL are now starting to roll-out Cable-Modem without the cable-modem, where the set-top-box is used as a cable modem; I assume this will be charged at the £20/mth rate.
***UPDATE*** My neighbour now has a cable-modem which we connected using USB. This does work quite well, but the combination of this and Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing is quite unreliable for anything except simple surfing. ...

For the low low price of £20.99 pcm, I get digital TV, 1 phone line, rental of a CM, and connection to NTL broadband starter pack. This gives you ISDN comparable speeds of 64K, and an always-on connection.

...I don't think so. With NTL you have to take their cable telephone package at less than a tenner and then add on the cost of the internet. You can also rent the modem as opposed to buying it (£5 a month or £150) which means less of an initial outlay. My total cost for both phone, broadband and modem rental is just over £30 per month. When you consider BT charge almost as much as this for line rental and BT anytime, you only pay a little more for a ... ...for 20 minutes' option. At the moment the goodwill of the customer is only maintained by the quality of the product.
It has to be concluded though that NTL broadband is a definate roadrunner. Just watch out for those ACME devices if you ever have to speak to them. ...
