Disadvantages: Slower than "true" broadband, downloads not lightning fast, connection can drop sometimes for no reason.

...I don't think so. With NTL you have to take their cable telephone package at less than a tenner and then add on the cost of the internet. You can also rent the modem as opposed to buying it (£5 a month or £150) which means less of an initial outlay. My total cost for both phone, broadband and modem rental is just over £30 per month.
