NVQ's. Are they worth it?

Advantages: Useful for practical jobs
Disadvantages: lots of questions to be answered

...the area of work the NVQ represents. What NVQs can I do? There are NVQs for almost all jobs. NVQs cover general, industrial and commercial sectors. They are divided into eleven groups: Tending animals, plants and land Extracting and providing natural resources Constructing Engineering Manufacturing Transporting Providing goods and services Providing health, social care and protective services Providing business services Communicating Developing ...
...career development. Getting an NVQ shows you can do a job to national standards and have the up-to-date skills employers are looking for. In terms of work, a qualification which proves you can do a job well is a valuable possession and which makes it worthwhile. With NVQs the practice is as important as the theory - they show what you can do as well as what you know. You don't have to sit through hours, days, weeks or even years of a course, and ...

NVQ do or NVQ don't?

Advantages: Something many people have to do, can be a useful stepping stone.
Disadvantages: Far too much complex paperwork for a vocational qualification, lack of support.

...the National Vocational Qualifications or NVQ are vast and wide-ranging. NVQ's are becoming a vital part of the workplace particularly in the manufacturing and service sectors were they are slowly becoming a prerequisite before starting work in such fields. In my field, the health profession 50% of care assistants/nursing auxiliaries etc were supposed to have their NVQ 2 in care by the end of 2005. There are several reasons why this became an impossibility ...
...reasons for this. The NVQ is described as a vocational qualification to be completed in the workplace. You are assigned an assessor who can either be shipped in from an external body such as a college or has been trained as an NVQ assessor by the workplace. The idea is that your assessor observes your work and documents how you behave, be it towards your clients/service users in the care sector, customers in the retail sector etc. They also observe ...

NVQ 2 and 3 In Care

Advantages: Got a pay rise!
Disadvantages: Got a head ache! but had fun

...my work by completing my NVQ 2 in care. As I passed level 2 I was asked to do level 3, this meant another pay rise so I started almost straight away. I have completed level 3 now and am waiting for my results, I think NVQ's are a great way to further your career or just gain more confidence in your work, I have gained so much from doing my NVQ's and could now get a job in any nursing home of community care projects and they would be a great start ...

Could you NVQ?

Advantages: Recognised by employers, relevant to work
Disadvantages: None that I can think of.

...I have recently passed my NVQ level 4 in Accounting with the AAT, so I thought that I would write and tell you all a little bit about NVQ’s (or SVQ’s (Scottish Vocational Qualification's) if you are in Scotland). NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification which, as the name suggests, means that the qualification received is suitable for the Vocation (work) you are doing, or wish to do. I decided to have a look for NVQ on the web and was directed ...
...is an NVQ? An NVQ is a qualification based on National Occupational Standards and often requiring “insider knowledge” to enable completion. NVQ’s are in 5 levels, starting at 1 and going to 5. GO FOR GOLD

Advantages: Good stepping stone into employment
Disadvantages: Doesn't pay well.

...awarding bodies. How an NVQ is made up. A typical level 2 qualification consists of 9 units of competence, usually 6 mandatory and 3 optional, although some of the older ones are 8 mandatory and 1 optional. These units are then broken down into elements, i.e. unit 1.1, 1.2 & 1.3, all these elements are needed to complete unit one. To achieve an element you must fulfil the Performance Criterion (PC’s), the Range and the Knowledge and Understanding ...
...what you need to do i.e. use correct software, the Range covers the type of tasks you must complete i.e. produce a letter. The K&U’s cover the knowledge required to do the job, i.e. Data Protection Act & etc. This then is the makeup of the qualification, is it worth the effort? There are two answers to this (guess what they are :o} )and there are two types of unemployed people who seek qualifications: The dodger who comes to keep the employment ...

When GCSE's aren't enough!

Advantages: Good Basic Training, relevant to course
Disadvantages: expensive lots of coursework

...good with figures and this NVQ would give me a good all round base to work from and I didnt need to provide evidence from a job. So, I enrolled to do two evenings a week. It was hard at first, but everything was so well laid out, with lots of information on how to complete the coursework, deadlines and timetable information that it was easy to follow. The tutor was excellent and understood that we really were amateurs, she went over everything twice ...
...to provide support. The NVQ itself was made up of units to be completed, I know that one of the units - Health & Safety is standard on all NVQ's and so if I decide to take another course I will not need to re-do this unit! I really do think that an NVQ is an excellent step to entering a job sector or gaining the best possible ground experience to help complete your knowledge. All the units are relevant, well set out and supported by coursework, ...

N.V.Q. = Best on the Job Training!

Advantages: Motivational.
Disadvantages: self discipline.

I was lucky enough to be enrolled on one of these by, my then employer as a gift! (The cost was £140). N.V.Q. or National Vocational Qualification in full, is a training method which allows the candidate to gain knowledge through use of observation, projects, oral and written questions, testimony of others, assessment of prior achievment and candidates own explanations at their place of employment. There are different courses for different vocations ...

The course was to last for nine months.During this time I was allocated a Verifier (a person who marks my written work ),an assessor (someone who supervises my practical work ), Paper work and a resource pack. If the Light Is On...

Advantages: better understanding
Disadvantages: can be hard in places

I have done both my NVQ level 2 and just finished my level 3, unlike others at my work place I got mine free as I was under 25 at the time, were as our employer has to pay. I wanted to have level 2 and 3 under my belt so I could move up the ladder and one day be the boss ( if only!! ) I work with clients that have acquired a brain injury through an accident or stoke so when I was choosing my units it was very hard as they were all to do with care ...
...interest me, I started the NVQ 2 on the understanding that I would know more about my job than when I started. But I have to say I didn't, yes it was good that I had this qualification behind me but it didn't push me in any way. Level 3 Now this was something I could really sink my teeth into, I was pushed to the point were the light wasn't on at first. Now I think every one goes through this when they first start the light is either on or off but ...

...what do you need an NVQ for? You're going backwards, it's a Masters you're after!" Actually, NO you're all wrong! So what if i've got a degree. ...an NVQ. NVQ is short for National Vocational Qualification. I have heard it called Not Very Qlever by people who regard it as being a qualification for drop-outs. The course which I took was focused at Adults, predominately with a family, as the course times coincided with those of local schools. Big bonus for me, having a son, even bigger bonus was the college payed most of my childcare costs. I was at college for 2.5 days per week, with a work ...

Advantages: Good stepping stone, can do at work, not full time course
Disadvantages: Long and drawn out process

I am currently doing an NVQ level 3 in customer service and thought i'd write a little about it as i have found it really worthwile. Firstly, i heard through a recruitment company that if you are 25yrs or under your employer has to let you do an NVQ if you wish to do one. Your assessor will visit you at work every 2-3 weeks. This is where all of your work will be done so you don't need to go to college. The sessions last for around an hour and a half. If you have to complete key skills tests as part of or as well as your chosen course, you may have to sit these ...

NVQ's - My advice to you

Advantages: payment as well as a known qualification
Disadvantages: can be hard work and stressful at times

...I have done my NVQ through the Chamber of Commerce in Worcester. But there are companies all round the UK that will provide the facilities for you. The tutors are nice people to work with and are there to help you every step of your qualification. You can have the job you want within a year. It has worked well for me, it can for you. By doing an apprenticeship you can study basically whatever subject you like. I.e. Engineering, Catering, Administration, ...
...an apprenticeship qualification level NVQ2 up to an NVQ5 depending on how much work you want to put in, all these are recognized qualifications. An NVQ2 is equivalent to 3 GCSE grades A-C. An NVQ3 is equivalent to an A level grade A. I hope this helps you. My Experience: My NVQ2 took approx a year to complete. I had help when ever I needed it either at the company premises, within my company or via the telephone. A tutor would visit me at work once ...

NVQ Is it for you

Advantages: Variety of subjects & levels
Disadvantages: There can be much away from the college work

NVQ obviuosly covers a huge range of skills, levels and subjects so I won't be generalising. I did an NVQ in administration level 3 after leaving school and before starting work. They said the course would take 1.5 - 2 yrs depending on my progress. It was done in 6 months - so if you have the motivation to get on with the study and homework you can get qualified very quickly in this field. I found the tasks very straight forward as I was already ...
...It really is worth having jobs you think are trivial (i.e. I can use a photocopier, fax machine, email, etc) down on paper in the form of an NVQ. I'm not sure how importantly they are viewed by potential employers but it shows them that you are willing to put work in to qualifying in you field. ...

N.V.Q. The way forward

Advantages: learn at your own pace, wide areas covered, recognised by employers, government funding available
Disadvantages: Lots of jargon,time consuming,

As an employer and an N.V.Q. assessor I think the introduction of these qualifications are an asset.I can employ staff who are qualified to do specific tasks, and their competence in these areas has been verified. As an assessor I find that most of my candidates work through the coursework quite quickly, again depending on how much time they are prepared to put into it.The main advantage is that it allows people who are not necessarily academic to ...
...Again,because you are learning about an area of interest progress seems to be faster. I work in the care industry and left school with few qualifications, but with N.V.Q.'s I have been able to achieve levels 2,3 and 4 as well as a level 4 in training which included a D32/33 award. In total I don't suppose I studied for more than 3 years and I have to say it wasn't difficult. If you are prepared to put the hard work in,time wise,I would say that they ...
