As a car owner it's inevitable that at some point you will need to service your car. As a new car owner you are restricted to the servicing being done by your dealer to retain cover under your warranty but once the 3 years are up you are free to go anywhere you like. But where do you go? Who do you trust to do the job well and without ripping you off? Well many years ago I couldn't afford brand new cars and got my car serviced and MOT'd by a mate but when he moved I was fortunate enough to come across a chain of garages called Lucas Autocentre. In those days Lucas was a manufacturer of ... more

I am just summarising my experience with Nationwide Autocenter. I bought a six year old laguna from a local garage in Leicester. I also took Auto Protect which covers me for the first one year against any mechanical/ electrical faults. It has been a smooth ride for 10 months after which I found the Brake Fluid leaking. I asked a local mechanic who quoted £225 as he needs to change the Master Cylinder and some other items which i cant remember now. Also he said he will service the car and do the MOT as well. But he cannot do it using my Auto Protect insurance. I was bit skeptical of leaving my ... more

*INTRO* I booked my Toyota Yaris into the Nationwide Autocentre, in Bridgend, for a full service (40,000 miles) and an MOT, for which I was quoted £188 inc VAT including a discount for having a Tesco clubcard. I booked online and waited for them to contact me nearer the time to confirm, however come Wednesday afternoon (service booked for Friday) hadn't had a call so I phoned myself, they'd never heard of me, and mumbled something about Easter causing a problem because head office are off but they are not off in the garage, anyway they booked me in for Friday anyway. This was BEFORE I read the ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Everything else

**November 2006 Update #1 - The branch I used was the Leeds York Road branch, Melbourne retail park, Leeds 14** I have had my car from new, and was tied to using the dealer for servicing in order to benefit from a "free" three year warranty. Anyway, the car had it's third birthday this year, so I thought I would start benefiting from the less expensive servicing options available out there. I had bought a third party warranty, whose recommended service agents were Nationwide Autocentres - great, I thought, there's one of them within two miles of home - so I got on the 'phone and booked an ... more

First off, I do NOT work for Nationwide and this review is only for the branch at Trafford, Manchester. As I only moved to Manchester recently, I do not know where to bring my car in for a major job. I do most of the servicing and minor jobs myself, so I do know quite a bit about cars. It will be hard for Nationwide, or anyone else for that matter, to try and rip me off. My first experience with Nationwide is for my MOT. Brought it in and it failed on 5 items. Well I'll start at the beginning. I checked out nationwide Autocentre's website - very impressive and I could get a £5 discount with my Tesco clubcard. So I booked my car in for the earliest date possible, Friday 6th October (the day my current MOT expired). I received an e-mail which said the manager would be in contact shortly to confirm my booking. That was on Monday. By Wednesday i was a little concerned that I had not received confirmation, so I gave them a call. They had no record of my booking, even when I gave them the reference number. Worse still he said they couldn't do it on Friday ... more

    Advantages Advantages Quick, polite, friendly

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Unrtustworthy. Rip-off merchants

I recently took me car in for its mot. Nationwide were offering half price mot's and as it was a franchise I suspected this would be a safe bet. I was wrong. I took my 10 year old Toyota to their garage in Aberdeen, and was told it had failed, requiring 4 new brake pipes. I accepted this, its an old car, that was fair enough. The mechanic even said that it had no other advisories so shouldnt only need pennies to get it through next year. Wonderful. Paid the £390 to get it through, and picked it up to be told that it will very shortly need front pads and discs (quoted at £280) and new fuel ... more

I have been using them since I have owned a car, and am really surprised at the comments on here - I can only assume that the service depends too much on which branch you are visiting. Harrogate I can definitely recommend. They are laways courteous, and explain fully what they intend to do, and always for bigger jobs they are happy for you to get second opinions. Their prices are cometitive, and they offer local price matches, which I've never been able to use, as they consistantly come in lowest. I have never been charged for bulbs when I've popped in to replace one, and they have done many ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Overcharging,

If the world had came to and end and my life depended on National Autocentre fixing my car, I would rather choose death than have them service my car again. I went into the Coventry Branch (36 Foleshill Road) for a service. They did the service and phoned me that the brake pads were "worn to metal" and the front OSF tyre was worn to the chords and then came the one I was waiting for my brake discs are stuffed and need to be replaced. Nationwide company policy is to do brake pads and to "encourage" (screw) punters that they need to replace the brake discs even if the discs are perfectly ... more

NATIONWIDE GLOUCESTER I booked my 2001 VW GOLF 1.6 in for a MOT and at 2.30pm he rang to tell me my car had passed the MOT and was ready for collection. I presented my AA card and got discount off the MOT - everything was so painless and friendly - even the bill of £119 was reasonable. This was such a welcome change for me as I am currenlty in dispute with KWIK FIT (Cheltenham). They fitted a complete exhaust for £348 a few months back and I've returned my car to them 9 TIMES!! They have replaced the Cat converter and the middle section (wrong one fitted first time) under warranty but the ... more
