Advantages Advantages Excellent Internet Banking and customer service

Disadvantages Disadvantages Upgrading a current account, please read review!

The Nationwide Building Society is one of the best building societies available and there must be a branch in every high street in the country with a range of services that are always expanding and the existing facilities getting better! I've had an account with Nationwide for the whole of my life and I have opened another five different ones in the last seven years. They are competitive and I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. I have highlighted my experiences in this review including the accounts I have owned, Nationwide services, the award winning Internet Banking service, customer service ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheapest way to have foreign cash and make purchases

Disadvantages Disadvantages Without a backup source of money or payment system, if it fails for whatever reason, then you could have a problem. But that applies to whatever method chosen. The foreign bank that owns the ATM could charge a handling fee, but that applies to all cards.

If you travel abroad and want to make the most of you holiday make sure you have a Nationwide FlexAccount. If you don’t already have one, OPEN ONE! It only takes a £1 Why? I hear you ask. Well it is the most cost efficient method of obtaining foreign currency abroad. It is also the cheapest method of paying for goods and services where a debit card can be used. The reason it that the Nationwide does not levy any additional fees or charges for using the card abroad. They treat it exactly the same as using it within the UK. I have used my card several times when on holiday in foreign lands ... more

Advantages Advantages No foreign exchange charges on FlexAccount debit card use

Disadvantages Disadvantages e-savings account complicated to operate

This was 2 articles until I realised that you can only have one opinion per category. Luckily I kept a copy of the old e-Savings opinion, which follows this review on using a Nationwide FlexAccount abroad. FlexAccount Foreign Exchange savings ------------------------------------ I opened a NationWide FlexAccount in conjunction with an e-Savings account. Whilst I'm not particularly impressed with the e-Savings account (see my original 'e-Savings exasperation' article below). I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how inexpensive it is to withdraw cash with the Debit card abroad. I don't ... more

Advantages Advantages Run for the customers - See op

    Disadvantages Disadvantages See op

I've held accounts with Nationwide all my life. I've always been impressed with their levels of service, and the accounts/mortgages they offer. However, recently- as they are one of the only remaining building societies, some people have stated that they'd like them to become a bank. Surely I can complain, I'd get loads of free shares, or at least some sort of financial reward. However, that's looking at it in the short term- because as a bank they would be run for profit- and therefore you can be sure that your money is making some fat cat fatter. I know some banks do offer good service and a ... more

Advantages Advantages Flexible accounts, easy to understand, good site layout, great customer service, online accounts updated regularly.

Disadvantages Disadvantages maybe a little on the slow side when it comes to getting an account off the ground when applied for online.

Since September 2001 I’ve been the proud owner of a Nationwide ‘Flex Account’. I’d been on the lookout for a current account that gave you the option of NOT having a compulsory chequebook and overdraft, but still gave bill payment facilities such as Direct Debits, Standing Orders, an ATM card, and the money transfer capabilities that most of us associate with a current account. Nationwide do just that. They weren’t my first port of call online, but having tried several other banks / building societies, they soon become the best option. They seem to have a more flexible approach when it comes ... more

Advantages Advantages Ease of Use, no charge foreign withdrawals, lots of options

Disadvantages Disadvantages can be a bit fiddly to set up.

I am currently travelling a lot abroad and what I needed was an account that would not charge me for foreign withdrawls from my bank account and be good when I was at home. I found that the Nationwide Flex account fitted the bill perfectly. An added bonus was that I could monitor and make transactions on line - like set-up / amend / cancel Standing Orders/Direct Debits/Bill Payments, check mini statement or see a more detailed statement or order a full statement in the post. The Flex account card is a multipurpose one. It is a ATM Link cashcard, a Visa Debit Card and it is a Delta card ( you ... more

Advantages Advantages Competitive interest rates, handily located branches, online and telephone banking available

Disadvantages Disadvantages Strict, no moveable criteria and rules in some cases

In my home town there aren’t all that many building societies, or rather there aren’t all that many of those things that used to be called building societies. When the day came, after having savings in TSB for about 15 years, to move my money elsewhere, I naturally wanted somewhere I could get to easily, and so after checking that they were relatively suitable and that they’d offer me a good interest rate, I switched to Nationwide. At the time I was young enough to have an under 18s Smart account (which I got to keep until I was 19, yay) and although I’ve had to move on ... more

Advantages Advantages Only if you are a perfect customer

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Long queues, mistakes...

I have been with the Nationwide Building Society for many years and they are like all money lenders brilliant when there is a lot of money in the account but shoddy when there is not. However I used my credit card for a large amount of money a few years ago and have been paying this back by direct debit. This arrangement worked out well for me in the early stages as it fitted in with the monthly allowance I wanted to pay them. Then my income changed and I decided I wanted to pay more on my credit card so with the direct debit in place I also paid EXTRA money one month which is something the ... more

Carpetbagger(n) An astute investor, often of modest means, who spots brilliant investment opportunities. In recent years, the best opportunities have come from mutual building societies and insurers; opening membership accounts for as little as £100 to qualify for windfalls from the inevitable process of conversion and takeover. (With the greatest thanks to the Carpetbagger site - http://www.mywebcommunities.com/carpetbagger/ ) Carpetbagging was a big thing a while back, the practice of spying out a likely mutual building society which was likely to convert at the drop of a hat, thus making ... more

Advantages Advantages Ease of use, High interest, friendly staff offering advice

Disadvantages Disadvantages You need internet access, but if you don't already have internet, you're disadvantaged anyway!

After realising that I was saving quite a bit of money, I thought I'd better put it somewhere where it would earn good interest, but would only need a days notice for me to get at it. And then it happened! I opened a Nationwide Flex account after seeing an advert in the papers. With one days notice, any money I have in the Flex account can be transferred into my E-Savings account and earning 7% interest (that rate has changed since to about 6.75, but let's not get technical!). The website is easy to use, and transferring money between accounts is a doddle. If you have a monthly income, or ... more
