Advantages: mutual
Disadvantages: could become a greedy bank

...an op on mortgage lender Nationwide instead, because who cares if everyone else has written about them. And hey, mortgages are the new rock 'n roll (okay, they're not but it's all I've got lined up). A mortgage is the biggest investment most of us will make in our lifetimes. It's a loan, usually over 25 years, to buy a home. There are many types but the big two are investment-backed and repayment mortgages. The former uses an investment product ...
...off interest each month. Nationwide offers both types of mortgage and, drum roll, is a mutual. This means it can return excess profits to members because it doesn't have shareholders to please with dividends. It does this by having a low standard APR (the rate of interest you pay after any special deals end). You might get a better deal from another mortgage lender for a few years but over the longer term Natiownide's mortgage should work out cheaper ...

Existing customer remortgaging made easy!!

Advantages: Mutual so best interest of customers(members)
Disadvantages: Not fully flexible

...with no direct contact with Nationwide but I did set up to access our mortgage a/c online which is straightforward, you register and they send you relevant details. Interest is calculated daily and you can make overpayments of upto £500 per calender month without incurring any charges for early repayment. Any overpayments can be drawn back out when you wish which is a good way of saving as interest is calculated daily. Tie ins last as long as ...
...up the phone and called Nationwide to see if they could match or better the Halifax offer. And they did! Saving me money on legal fees because the lender would not be changing, valuation fees as the house had already been valued and as an existing customer, they knocked £200 off the product reservation fee. I also was able to request extra money for home improvements and this was dealt with in a manner where I knew they were looking at our circumstances ...

A Very frustrating time

Advantages: see text
Disadvantages: see text

...been a customer of the Nationwide for over ten years, I have not missed or even been late with a single mortgage payment in that time nor have I ever gone overdrawn. So when it became time to move to a larger house we naturally turned to the Nationwide for our mortgage (mistake one). I assumed that because the Nationwide was a building society as opposed to a bank they would be in the best position to serve my needs and offer me solutions to any ...
...this one, mortgage through the Nationwide and in between get a job transfer to be nearer to the house. Sounds simple, it should have been. Everything was going smoothly, got the job, got the mortgage, sold our house, bid accepted for our new home. Wow we were going to be in our new home by Christmas, Yippee!!!!!! Not so……. Due to unforeseen circumstances the purchasers of our house had unexpected problems which delayed the process. ...

Carpet Baggers beware

Advantages: Large range of products, helpful patient advice, award winner
Disadvantages: Interest rates can go UP as well as down.

...about my mortgage from the Nationwide is slightly buoyed by the low interest rate making it a good time to have a mortgage and the increase in house prices is helping too. Before I even started looking at houses I looked for a mortgage as this is one of the options – and possibly the easiest one to do at the time, so I had a chat with my Bank – HSBC and Nationwide, and what really swayed me was that my parents had their mortgage with ...
...The people at the Nationwide were very helpful in going through the different types of mortgage with me and spent time giving me various quotes (much as HSBC had done) for different products and different loan amounts. They asked questions like “How much do you feel you need to know that your repayments will not change / go up” etc to try to match products to me. In the end I chose a First time buyer mortgage because it gave a nice easy ...

Where the customer really does know best

Advantages: some good products, low SVR,
Disadvantages: Customer service is terrible

...I have had accounts with Nationwide for a number of years and up until now, have dealt with my local branch. I have always been pleased with the service provided, that was until I decided to take advantage of their internet/telephone service, Nationwide Direct. Below is part of a letter of complaint that I recently sent to the Nationwide Direct Customer Service Manager, expressing my discontent with the service I received (I apologise for the length ...
...my recent dealings with the Nationwide Building Society and in particular Nationwide Direct. Having decided to redeem my existing fixed rate mortgage in favour of a base rate tracker and pay a hefty redemption penalty, I contacted Nationwide by telephone to make the appropriate arrangements. I choose to arrange this by telephone, rather than in the branch due to the fact that I have a small daughter and find it difficult to attend appointments. The ...

nat building society

Advantages: none

I've always had a repayment mortgage. I was lucky enough not to be talked into an endowment mortgage, as I always thought that because as there was no guarantee of the endowment paying off what I owed, it was a bit risky. "Oh no sir, no chance of that". Better still, I took my repayment mortgage out with the Nationwide. Better because they have remained mutual, and so have had lower interest rates than most of the others, and better still because ...

Excellent for First Time Buyers and Shared Ownership mortgages

Advantages: no fees, low rates and friendly, helpful service
Disadvantages: interest is annual rest - daily interest saves hundreds!

...lending us some money. The Nationwide surpassed all other offers by far. Firstly, the Nationwide offers no arrangement fee to First Time Buyers (this was £195 with the other lenders). There is no Mortgage Indemnity Guarantee Scheme (MIGS)or Scheme for Maximum Advance for high percentage lending when you are a first time buyer. This has saved us approximately £400. They also payed for the valuation (approximately £175) and offered us cashback at ...
...the rates - fixed at below 6% for the first year and discounted for the second, with no redemption penalties for switching lenders or paying early. It is the level of service and overall competitiveness in a limited market that really impressed us into choosing their product. After all, when you are a first time buyer you all the help you can get. ...

not so flexible mortgage

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: do not like self employed, too slow, didint return calls prompt

...I had banked with the nationwide for over 20 years i said i wanted to re-mortgage with them . Elaine set the wheels in motion even though she didn't think nationwide would let us go through with our mortgage. she said she had a few customers that found them more than useless and wasted their time. Nevertheless, i wanted to try and ignored her good words at my peril. The nationwide branch in uxbridge wanted to know everything except my husbands inside ...
...to completion. As for Nationwide and the take away mortgage, well if they think we are still hanging on for them to say yes in two months time, they can forget it. The take away mortgage should be renamed. It is not a flexible as they advertise and they do not like IT contractors either. I thought Nationwide was for its members, especially as its a mutual. Wrong! Thanks Abbey, you have been brilliant. ...

A cut above the rest

Advantages: excellent interest rates, flexible mortgage
Disadvantages: always that threat of de-mutualisation

...been mortgage customers of the Nationwide Building Society now for nearly 3 years and we have nothing but praise for them. Firstly, and the main point when you have a mortgage, their interest rate is much lower than the other high street names, curently being 0.5% less than the relatively recently converted Halifax. Now, I'm good at maths, but not that good and I've no idea what that works out over a 25 year period of a standard mortgage but I'm ...
...why I intend to vote Nationwide to remain a building society for as long as I have a vote. The customer service is always excellent, the interest rates for savings as well as mortgages are highlky competitive and their mortgage is also very flexible, allowing you to make overpayemtns, underpayments and to take pre-arranged payment holidays if necessary. I'm glad we took our Nationwide mortgage, long may they remain mutual!!! ...

Excellant and Fair deals

Advantages: Cheapest deal
Disadvantages: Why the reservation fee?

...though I wasn't a previous Nationwide borrower they were still able to beat Halifax's best offer. So good-bye Halifax, hello Nationwide! I had to pay for the valuation of the house I wanted to purchase and a fee to reserve the mortgage. The cost of both of these were returned to me on completion. I think it fair that I pay for the valuation. But to reserve the mortgage? I don't think this is fair, nor do I see the point of it. Buying the house ...
...But the Nationwide was great throughout. They kept me upto-date on the progress and were ready to pay out the money when we needed them to. I also took advantage of the insurance policies they offered, as these were competitive. The cost of the insurance policy is included with the mortgage which makes it that little bit easier to read my bank statement. Or is it to hide the cost of the insurance so it's harder for me to compare prices with the ...

A great lender

Advantages: Affordable and wonderfully flexible
Disadvantages: They make money from you, they all do.

...up by the banks, the Nationwide remains a very proud mutual. In order to avoid carpet-bagging if you take a mortagage with them you now have to sign a form to say that if it is bought by a bank then you will hand your windfall over to charity. This is in the hope that people would vote against a takeover. So, ethically, they have some good ideas. Mortgage-wise they have won the Which? Best Mortgage award several times over. They are currently in ...

Very slow service

Disadvantages: Slow service, poor communication, poor customer service, staff dont talk to each other.

...applied for a mortgage via Nationwide and I believe I got a good rate. However it was 15 weeks from application to approval. Here are the issues: 1) I have found the service very slow and kept receiving calls from the branch asking me how the mortgage was progressing, even though progress was waiting on their own head office! Can Nationwide staff not call their own head office to find out? Apparently not. 2) My Nationwide branch advisor went on holiday ...

I am now 3 weeks away from my existing rental contract expiry and am relying on the solicitors making their searches etc ASAP so I dont end up homeless ...

Nationwide Direct but so frustrating

Advantages: Convenient
Disadvantages: Site didn't work, still have to talk to someone constantly

Nationwide Direct Mortgage I recently moved house, needed a mortgage and decided to give the 'net a try. I was an existing Nationwide mortgage holder, and have found then very competitive, so they were chosen again. You have to register to be able to use the site. You then have your own space from which you can then choose from the usual building society products, and send and receive secure email. Initially things went well. The mortgage on-line ...
...ambiguous questions. I filled it out and sent it back. The first problem then appeared. A message on screen stated that I had messages, but I was unable to read them. I emailed them to the unsecured address and they mailed me back; to the same place where I couldn't read them. So it took a phone call to discover that there was a fault. Although the customer number I entered as it was issued to me, the first letter had to be a capital letter. After ...

...advice that I received from Nationwide was second to none. I am new to the mortgage game and found that they were helpful and infromative when comared to other compnaies that I have quizzed of late concerning mortgage lending. The other bonus was the amount that they were willing to lend. On a disposable income of £1600 a month and a £20,000 deposit we can borrow up to £210,000.
