I actually bought these straighteners for my flatmate as a Christmas present last year as she has very thick, naturally curly hair which she has been trying to blow dry straight for years. She noticed that steam straighteners weren't very effective on her hair as apart from not being gentle and ripping half her hair out, the steam also tended to make her hair frizz, countering the straightening effect. I have to admit that these are the best straightening irons i've ever purchased and believe me i've purchased quite a few over the years. The irons are light and easy to use, the ceramic plates glide through hair with ease, there is a heat setting button that ranges from 1 - 9 to suit all hair types including the really curly and an on/off switch with indicator light I set the straighteners on 4 and straightened my hair in around 15 minutes - it usually takes 45 and leaves kinks but my hair is the smoothest and shiniest i've seen it since leaving the hair dressing salon. I purchased these Nicky Clarke hair straighteners for my sister a couple of Christmases ago, as she asked for them and they were on offer (under £30) out of Boots. She said they were the best hair straighteners that she has - and she's always using hair straighteners on her hair. I decided then that it was time to start looking after my own hair and I bought myself a pair. They have been the best investment I have ever made.
