Super-G Don't thrill me

Advantages: 108Mbps
Disadvantages: No Wall mount

...thrill me I received my Netgear DG834GT 108Mbps wireless ADSL router free with my Sky Broadband unlimited download package; when I learnt I would be receiving a free wireless router I was quite excited as I already had a router I had purchased for my previous network with another ISP before I moved. However I decided to go with Sky in my new home and awaited my free Router. What you get When it arrived I unpacked it; it is an attractive looking ...

I bought the Netgear DG834GT after having been a happy customer of the non-wireless DG834 for many years. I needed to upgrade to wireless after buying a Nintendo DS and a Sony PSP. I was hoping that my previous good experiences with the DG834 would carry on with the DG834GT and I was not disappointed. The web interface is simple to use and very similar to the one I was used to on the older model. Setting up was just a few simple clicks. I chose ...
...So whether you've used previous Netgear routers like I had or are new to them, I think the Netgear DG834GT is very good product at a reasonable price. And if you're a fan of playing videogames like I am you might like to know that the router works fine with the Nintendo DS, the Sony PSP and the Microsoft XBox 360 all of which I had up and running within half an hour of unpacking the router. The only downside is that it might not be the cheapest ...

...in the form of this Netgear WGR 614 Wireless Router. When I first took the router out of the box I was impressed to see the number of ADSL splitters I got with it, (three in total) but for now I only needed the one. Setup was what I would call 'normal' - Plug in the mains power and plug in the supplied RJ11 phone cable to the splitter. Then either hook up a computer via an Ethernet cable or hook up through a wireless connection. Another few mins ...
...then don't be afraid as Netgear set all the defaults to recommended settings and you'll never really have a need to get deeply involved. If you're looking to set up a wireless network for your home or small business I can strongly recommend this piece of kit. It has a small footprint, is silent in operation and doesn't get too hot. Easy to configure, quick to get going from being switched off and so far it's never lost its connection or dropped ...

...at the time chose the Netgear DG834G (please see my review on this model for full information). Having bought around 100 of these models we have now had 5 fail for various reasons. At this point I thought it would be prudent to have another look at some of the other models available. As well as this Netgear model I have also been looking at the Linksys WAG54G (again a separate review). What I was hoping to achieve from this review was something ...

On checking the Netgear support web site it mentions that you can only achieve this speed by using channel 6 on the router (there are 11 channels available). This is not mentioned anywhere else. For me it still didn't work anyway. I am certainly not claiming here that you cannot get this to work - only I could couldn't with equipment that should ...

The final nail in the coffin for this product is that fact that you cannot easily achieve the 108MB transfer that this router promises. As my wife's laptop is only rated to the 802.11g standard is it only capable of transfer speeds of up to 54MBs. My desktop PC uses the supplied adapter so should be capable of transfer speeds of 108MBs. The router allows you to set ...

Advantages: Very Relaible
Disadvantages: Drops out if your ADSL has a low SNR ratio

For the record i am a technical person so for me some of what i needed to do wasnt all that much of a chore but i hope this all helps you with your purchase. I have BT Broadband and i live close enough to my local exchange to get a the 1mbit service. Netgear, being a fairly major company when it comes to wireless networks have certain standards expected of the concerning their products. Therefore, after aquiring my DG834GT super wireless router with built in modem (large title...), i felt somewhat dissapointed with its overall performance, especially considering I forked out £80 for it (althogh it came with a wireless usb adapter too). Easy to set up router

Advantages: Small and neat and easy to set up
Disadvantages: Had to be hard reset

I bought this router to replace my old wired one through Virgin media for £40. It arrived within 2 days of ordering over the internet. It came in a small box and was neatly and safetly packaged. This is one of the easiest pieces of equipment I have ever bought. All I had to do was put the CD into my laptop drive and it popped up with the instructions step by step. It went right from the basics of where to plug each cable in. It powered up fine and ...

I then had to go through the whole installation process again but immeditaely it then connected wirelessly. It did seem from the help I received on the phone that they ...

...sky on the front where netgear would be. The excellent thing about this router, is it's ability to hold on to low noise margin connections. Where I live, we get a terrible noise margin on our lines. Usually this would lead to the cutting out of internet. The web interface is easily accessible through a web browser, like all of the other netgear ...

By using a dynamic dns provider, suchas dyndns.org, you are able to make a easy to remember hostname that you can type in wherever to go straight to the IP of your router. As soon as the IP address on your router changes, a signal is sent off to dyndns to update the ...

Netgear DG834GT, top wireless router

Advantages: fast, easy to set up, good signal strength
Disadvantages: slightly more expensive

This was my first wireless router and i have to say i found it all a bit confusing with all the different types of router out there ones with modems ones without, adsl, cable etc etc. This router is for people who get their internet access through their phoneline and not from telewest or ntl. I use the usb wireless adaptor that came with the router on my desktop pc as it didn't have a wireless card. That was equally as simple i just plugged it into a free ...

Only one problem. Otherwise Amazing

Advantages: Fast. Easy to steup. Small. Amazing wireless and wired connection reliability.
Disadvantages: No power switch. Out of Box Firmware has a bug that can obstruct connection

While this router is an absolutly amazing piece of equipment, it has one flaw that it comes with right out of the box. It is easy and fast to setup and needs little, if any, manual tweaking. It comes with a full built-in firewall and wireless protection, and is easy to setup ports/DHCP/NAT etc. But this bug, which isn't a huge thing, can cause a lot of problems. Unfortunately to fix it you would already need an internet connection or to know someone ...
...1.01.00 of the firmware. If you have an ISP which doesn't require a password, then it is possible that authentication could fail with "CHAP". It is possible to setup the router correctly and connect to it, but the router will not connect to the internet at all if your ISP requires this CHAP authentication and you haven't input a password. This is fixed in the 1.01.12 version of the firmware, and although it is a beta firware is works flawlessly. ...

Even though the DG834GT was only run for a few hours in the evening and at weekends I found it got rather hot. It also dropped its internet connection which became more frequent and more annoying.
