A Cracking Tale Review ofNeverwhere - Neil Gaimanby

Advantages: Witty, dark, enthralling, entertaining Disadvantages: None - it kept me entertained throughout
...were characters in the novel Neverwhere and living in London, the chances are they'd now be living in London Below, moving invisibly through the sewers, trading on the Floating Market, and opening doors that need to be opened for nefarious angels.
With penmanship that is akin to James Herbert and Tom Holt, Neil Gaiman's imagination introduces you to Richard Mayhew, a financial analyst who, by a chance encounter with a scruffy homeless girl who ...

Advantages: Terrific plot, impressive characters and brilliant description Disadvantages: That TV series - ewww.
Neil Gaiman is supposedly famous in the world of Sci-fi / Fantasy writing, but the first I heard of him was when my sister went out and bought this book. And I'm so glad she did. Although it was made into what was possibly the worst T.V. sci-fi series ever, the book is tremendous.
It's all about this bloke Richard Mayhew, who appears to have a perfect, if slightly boring life (rich, posh fiancée, decent job, nice flat in London). One day he's ...

Advantages: Gaimans prose at its best Disadvantages: I wanted pictures, and the ending begs for a sequel
...better than his novel Stardust.
In Neverwhere Gaiman creates a society underneath London. After helping a girl named Door, Richard Mayhew (from London above ie normal) finds himself travelling to London Below in order to regain his normal life. Unfortunatly for him Door is seeking her families killers and he gets drawn into the quest for the murderers. This quest involves an Angel called Islington, the Earl who holds court on a tube train and (by ...

This book was originally written as a television series years ago, is one of my favourite books. Although I do not credit it as being Gaiman's best work, I still love it and enjoy it every time.
Basically, the story is about the other London, known as London Below. The London we know is called London Above, and in London Above lives a man called Richard Mayhew. He's just a normal guy who lives alone in a flat because his girlfriend can't stand ...

Advantages: Offbeat plot, dark humour Disadvantages: If you know nothing of London, some referances may be lsot on you
I was attracted to this book because hte author Neil Gaiman did a very successful Comicbook series called Sandman and seemed the sort of bloke that could write a marvellous fantasy novel given half a chance. Well he was given half a chance, infact this started out as a television series on BBC2 (with help from Lenny Henry would you beleive?) that nobody seemed to watch. If the series was only a fraction as good as the book, this is a terrible shame.
Its ...

Advantages: A sweeping vision, totally reinventing London as you know it. Disadvantages: Perhaps the book could have been longer, to better exploit the setting...
Having just reviewed Christopher Fowler's 'Roofworld' elsewhere on this site, it's a little tricky to be entirely objective about 'Neverwhere'. Once again, we have a secret society living in London, on this occasion beneath the streets. On this occasion though, we have a realm rooted more deeply in fantasy than the plausible, where monsters roam, and characters are both unworldly and familiar. Take for example the Angel called Islington, the girl ...

Neil Gaiman writes again a very entertaining book about two worlds.... the London Above and Below.
The London Above is the London as we know it... I don't have to explain this bit.
The London Below was portrayed based on the London Underground map names and locations. Being a traveler on the Underground, it now makes me wonder what's really in those tunnels, through the doors and niches. And what really happens to the trains and carriages when ...

i truly felt i had to write a review on this book because i have never read a book better.
it may be my taste and i know people may not actually like this kind of story but for extreme fantasy fiction this book is the best.
it can be difficult to follow because the storyline is kind of extreme but when your into it there is no coming out!
its starts with a young business scots lad going to london to persue his career and getting given an umbrella ...
