Proxam gets some NOOKIE

Advantages: Readily available, easy-drinking
Disadvantages: Not very complex

...a lot of hype surrounding NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE. Why, even back in the dark ages of my youth, when drinking beer was an exciting, illegal thrill, 'Nookie Broon' held a certain mystique. Maybe it was because all the bikers and the bad boys were partial to the stuff. Maybe it was the claims that it would get you rat-arsed quicker than any other beer (I wasn't too smart in those distant days of youth). Be that as it may, for as long as I can remember, ...
...and nondescript, keg beer. Newcastle brown Ale was a beer that seemed to have a bit more character and style (never mind the fact that it was brewed by one of the worst offenders of keg purgatory). Which just goes to show how starved we were of quality beer back then - not to mention how naive. NEWCASTLE BROWN ALE has been brewed in the Tyne-side city of that name since 1927. Within a year of making its appearance, it had won Gold Medals at the International ...

The great English Tradition

Advantages: Full of flavour, well priced, Premium Beer
Disadvantages: None unless you drink too much of course

...than my favorite English Beer, Newcastle Brown Ale. WOW! I could not believe it; in fact I am sure Ellen thought I was going to wet myself with excitement over this clear glass bottle filled with a golden brown liquid. Not only was this my favourite beer, but also upon close inspection of the label I saw that it was brewed in Newcastle and Imported out here, not brewed under license as some beers are. So I was getting the real thing. Newcastle ...
...beers was first born. Newcastle Brown Ale is without doubt a very fine beer. It is full flavoured, rich, dark and with a sweet scent and mildly sweet taste. It is certainly no bitter. Having been weaned on this as a youth my taste for it has never diminished. Sure it can give you a thick head in the morning, but so can any alcoholic drinks if taken is large quantities. At around 6% proof per bottle, this is not the strongest of beers, but it is ...

Advantages: erm I'm thinking of some!
Disadvantages: er loads!

...that great foe of mine Newcastle Brown Ale or fondly know by it's millions of fans ( not me I add)as Newkie Broon! Rumour had it in Tooyoo circles that I had a particular fondness for this beverage - you know who you are so I won't name and shame! But to be honest when it comes to beer I'm a girlie lager drinker! Give me a nice gin n tonic and I've very happy thanks all the same! Now the terms of the dare was that I had to not only write an op on ...
...to sample it! Newcastle Brown ale is brewed by the Scottish and Newcastle Breweries. It was first produced in 1927, winning medals in the 1928 at the international brewing fair of that year. If you look closely on the label - not that I'd recommend you get over familiar with this evil drink you'll see a copy of the medal on the label! Sales boomed of the evil brown ale in the pre and post war era. Newcastle Brown was synonymous with the hard working ...

Advantages: Real Beer at a canny price.
Disadvantages: None unless you are a Shandy Drinker

...life sampling vast qualities of Newcastle Brown so I, Mr Baz can give you all an insight in to this drink. What I do in the name of research and for Ciao! I have drunk Brown Ale for most of my life. I don’t drink it regularly, but I cannot put a reason as to why this is?. I do find it refreshing and love the taste so why do I favour lager over it? I honestly cannot tell you even when I am sick to my back teeth of drinking lager that is off, week ...

I am sure that many people will know the expression “Beer Goggles”, but not many will understand the latter two. Beer Coats is when you are protected from the Cold, so you can go down the Town wearing only a short sleeved “Jacky Wilson” shirt even when its minus –10 outside ...

Like an Old Friend.

Advantages: Clean Smooth Taste.
Disadvantages: None

...of time in and around Newcastle upon Tyne. At that time the most logical beer to drink was of course Newcastle Brown. When you go into a pub you do not know, you are never quite sure what the quality of the draught beer is likely to be as this so often depends on the way the landlord looks after the pipes etc. I therefore got into the habit of drinking Newcastle Brown, which comes in its very familiar one pint bottles. Of course at that time nobody ...
...you that to fully enjoy Newcastle Brown then this is how it should be served. A later addition to the label is the temperature sensitive blue star. Newcastle Brown is definitely better drank cold so at twelve degrees C the star starts to turn blue. For a while I stopped drinking Newcastle Brown and even now when I go out I drink Fosters Lager (See my opinion), but for drinking at home it is now nearly always Newcastle Brown. Although you can taste ...

Just walking the Dog

Advantages: Smooth nutty flavour
Disadvantages: Goes down too well

...crack aboot the broon. Newcastle Brown Ale, in the Sixties this was known as Barmy Broth because of its effect after over indulgence, later on in the early Seventies it was locally known as Jurneyinterspayus or * Journey into space* for those who don’t speak the language. Now it is known as the old brown dog, this came about by gentlemen proclaiming to their wives that they were taking the dog for a walk, the canines in question lay obediently ...
...went sour and Scottish & Newcastle Breweries (S & N) were stumped, perhaps old stock was being sold or it had been kept too warm. This then brought about the date stamp on the label, every batch had its own code and every brew was dated, this had no effect and it was the master brewer (retired) who sorted out their problems. This was not the last problem, an aggressive take-over bid by an Australian brewery threatened the future of S & N, the Brown ...

...is a twenty-year-old bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale. When I catch sight of it I often wonder if this stuff goes bad. Will the bottle eventually explode all over my clothes perhaps? Will I awake one morning to an awful mess in there? Michael snorts and says not. It's a special edition bottle too, given to all British soldiers who went to the Falklands to fight for Mrs Thatcher those twenty years ago. Before he joined the ranks of the peaceniks and ...

Fancy A Pint o' Broon

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...of the best! Brewed in Newcastle since 1927, Newkie Brown(as it gets called here anyway) is one of the UK's finest beers and also one of its most popular. You can purchase NBA in two different formats from your local supermarket - either in cans or in bottles, either way the price is around the same - the cans do however often come in cheaper because you are usually buying four at once. As a student te reason I pumped for Newkie in th efirst place ...

Money doesn't grow on trees you know and for a student quantity comes first where beer is concerned. ;o) It just so happens that Newkie doesn't actuallyhave a bad taste - just a rather 'weak' one...rather non-descript and probably best described as 'thin' rather than 'weak'. Its light ...

Nectar for the Geordies

Advantages: Aromatic. Strong. Full Flavour
Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste

...associated with that city is Newcastle Brown Ale. This famous beer has been brewed in the city since 1927 and its fame has spread far beyond its home city. In my view it is a very good tipple - aromatic, full bodied and a nice deep rich dark brown colour. It has a good rather nutty type flavour and from my experience dosen't have much of an after taste. Frankly, I must confess I am not a regular drinker of NBA but have savoured it sporadically over ...

Wy ay, dya fancy a Snickers bar like

Advantages: Apparently you buy one of these and you are instantly one of the men - amazing
Disadvantages: It tastes like a Snickers bar, and you have to shave your head for the authentic look

...is all this fuss over Newcastle Brown Ale? Tell me. Go on. Let's face it. It's a run of the mill beer that just happens to be associated with Newcastle and a reasonable football team? But honestly, the beer itself is so bland that you might as well drink tapwater (or Budweiser, which is about the same thing). Newcastle Brown is clever marketing, because young folk these days like to go into a pub and order a bottle of beer instead of a proper hand-pulled ...

This bottle is, as a result of some mind-manipulation, the most popular bottled ale in the whole land, though 90% of that is probably students who should be attending lectures studying hard instead of in the student bar buying these things. beautiful brown

Advantages: Smooth and refreshing
Disadvantages: Too much you go BLEARGGH

Newcastle brown ale. I think that sums up the product in all its glory, its from Newcastle it's brown and it's ale!! I first started drinking brun (as those cheery fellows from the North East call it) shortly after the classic "cider phase" (often incorporating blackcurrant) that all adolescents go through when first stepping into the drinking world. Having had enough of vomiting up my stomach lining and being terrified I'd ruptuterd by myself internally ...
...switch, enter the Brun!!!! Newcastle brown ale had all the qualities I was looking for at the time:- it wasn't cider, it was highly alcoholic, it tasted lovely, it came in a bottle (always handy when young and threatened in a bar room brawl type situation due to it's heavy base making it an effective club when wielded by the neck, although this did generally lead to spillage!!) and it had a strong affliation to the world of HEAVY METAL!!!!!!! Yeah! ...

not a premium ale

Advantages: you can get it in bottles - preferable to cans if you ask me.
Disadvantages: not much life in the flavour.

I used to drink Newcastle Brown back in my teens - before I got into my gothic "snakebite and black, or vodka" phase, and before I actually discovered real ale. When you're perhaps not the oldest of drinkers, and haven't had time to try much, it can seem appealing - nice glass bottle, lable to put off while you're talking, that sort of thing. At the time, I loved it dearly and wouldn't drink anything else. For some reason, the pubs in my area stopped ...
...to my old friend the Newcastle Brown. It would ebf air to say that I was dissapointed. Newcastle Brown, in comparisson with real ale, tastes distincly chemicaly, its a bit gassy as well. It does depend a lot on what you like - I have developed something of a taste for hoppy ales (hops are one of the key ingredients in beer, - you don't get them in lager, which is one of the main diffrences there.) Hops have a rich, bitter sweet sort of flavour, and ...

You too can be a Geordie in Wonderland

Advantages: Rather delicious
Disadvantages: Something of an acquired taste

Newcastle Brown Ale. "Newkkie Brown". "Nuclear Brown". "Broon". These are just some of the myriad names afforded to Scottish & Newcastle's famous brew. And it is famous, not least because of the packaging. Look at a bottle of Brown Ale. The distinctive shape. The familiar, classic label with its striking yellow and blue colouring. The recent addition of a little star on the back label that turns blue when it's chilled. It looks so damn sexy it's ...
...I'd recommend Newcastle Brown any day of the week, It stands proudly alone as my preferred 'at home' tipple, and is only narrowly edged out in the pub by Guinness on tap. And also the fact that have the ruddy bars here in Belfast don't stock it...grumble, grumble... ...

"NEWKIE" A British tradition

Advantages: A classic British beer
Disadvantages: In cans

I first tasted Newcastle in The Golden Lion in Soho in 1979 when I was very young and on my way to join the army. I liked the taste and have been drinking it on and off since then. It has a nice nutty taste and is very easy to drink, you could quite easily drink a few bottles without realising how much you had gone through. Newcastle is a beer available on tap in pubs and in cans, however it is far better in bottles. It is a dark beer which although ...
...people. The cans although not as good as the bottles do a good service and are one of the few that have transfered well, there is no acidic taste you get with cans sometimes. This is however one of those beers that do need to be chilled in the fridge, but it is well worth it. A good advert for us older drinkers is The likely Lads they are often seen drinking a bottle of "Newkie" and the taste is as good then as now. ...

Advantages: Puts you to sleep if you got a strange body clock
Disadvantages: you have to pay for it

This stuff is the business! The same price as a pint, but you get a bit more. Normally available in bottles but you can now buy in cans. Cans are available from duty free shops so stock up for the holiday. I enjoy drinking this on my first night off nightshift. It helps me get to sleep before 5am. I'm rarely ill the next day from drinking it. The taste is more defined than any lager. Better cold like every other drink. Best drank by pouring some ...
