Aye man.... It's champion
Review of Newcastle University by
robscott
Advantages: Cheap nights out, Very high standard of teaching and facilities, massive numbers of clubs/societies to join, huge student union, big library
Disadvantages: Fines, the weather
...listing the different things that Newcastle has which are important to me has taken me a long time – many of these things which I have enjoyed or even disliked did not enter my head when thinking about which university to go to. Therefore, I will first briefly detail the circumstances which lead to my studying at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne…
Why I Chose Newcastle
This is fairly simple really, as an A-level student I was not particularly ...

***The University***

Newcastle is an old red brick University and consequently it has some of those old beautiful red brick parts that they just don't build anymore (this is where you will find architecture and the buisness school). ...

Local lad, Local University
Review of Newcastle University by
L2LoveU
Advantages: Great campus, friendly staff & excellent night life.
Disadvantages: Hand in dates, uni work
Just before I started Newcastle Uni almost 5 years ago i was on a bit of a low. I'd applied to do mechanical engineering at leeds, aston, edinburgh and glasgow, and had been knocked back by all of them. It was shortly after this bitter disappointment that a family friend had suggested applying to Newcastle.
I therefore deferred my application for a year, got a job in the relevant sector and then re-applied the following year to Newcastle Uni, ...

Come on in, it's great...
Review of Newcastle University by
AndyConnolly
Advantages: Standard of teaching, city centre campus, on campus nightlife, off campus nightlife, cost of living, clubs and sports teams, sense of belonging
Disadvantages: They actually make you *work* sometimes..., and it can get cold!
...repeating my first year at Newcastle University following illness just before my exams, and I'm enjoying it as much as ever!
I'm doing a BA(Hons) in Accounting and Finance (UCAS code N400 if you're into that kind of thing) and so study in the Armstrong Building, a building steeped in tradition. You cannot help but feel like a scholar in this building, with its marble plaques and historic King's Hall.
I have a confession to make at this point, ...

Business Management course
Review of Newcastle University by
amber1
Advantages: Great night life, cheap drinks and low rent
Disadvantages: Very cold!!
I studied at Newcastle uni for 3 years and loved every minute of it. My flat was great, the night life is unbeatable and the atmosphere is the friendliest of any city i've ever been to. What I have realised since though, is that my course was very useful too! At the time my lectures were just something I did between drinking sessions but since I went out into the big wide world i've discovered that my Business Management course has set me in good ...

Pound for pound: excellent.
Review of Newcastle University by
Cyber_Dad
Advantages: Situated in a fascinating part of the world
Disadvantages: None I can think of.
...undergraduate and postgraduate student of Newcastle University, I say it is a good institution with some excellent staff and resources in a fantastic city.
Talking to other students from the same courses at other Universities I found that they were less informed and less organised. Many of them had tales of poor administration: applications ignored or lost or left to the last minute.
I, on the other hand, had top class tutors who knew exactly ...

Sociology degree - no way
Review of Newcastle University by
paulnorth
Advantages: Few unless u want a poor degree
Disadvantages: Bad course - staff don't care/can't teach
...about being a student at Newcastle U and doing sociology. Me too - finished my degree last this year and ok got a 2.1. But no thanks to the staff or courses. Wanted to do PG work but not able to get any grants. Been to some other Us for interviews and found that Newcastle is not rated. Was told that I would struggle to keep up with those who had been to a U that had a good foundation in theory as Newcastle was know to a rag bag of courses. I quote ...

Howay the lads!
Review of Newcastle University by
ashleyfrieze
Advantages: Great city, prestigious university
Disadvantages: Not everyone sees Newcastle in a good light
Newcastle University took me from Leeds and planted me in the heart of the North East of England for 3 years (Undergraduate Computing Course).
8 years later, I still live in Newcastle.
The city is excellent and the University is a good way to find that out.
The quality of the degree course was high and has prepared me very well for my career in that field. The staff and facilities are also pretty good, with IT facilities among the best in ...

Halls - the pick of the bunch
Review of Newcastle University by
keavy
Advantages: Location, ease (food), large number of students
Disadvantages: Breakfast is served early (7-10)
Castle Leazes is the place to be - you can apply to one of three halls within the one main building, although there's no real difference between them. Most freshers live here, mainly because it's the handiest for town and uni, and there's no need to worry about food (it's not wonderful, but I've had worse). Floors/corridors are single sex, but this didn't prove to cause any problems
Just for interest:
Next door (well through a cow field) is ...

RockinG!!!!
Review of Newcastle University by
Mohammed
Advantages:
Disadvantages: Geordies. (Just kidding)
This is an amazing city with just about everything in it. The university may be very old and have a traditional feel to it I can assure you that the the courses are very much upto date with some of the leading experts in their respected fields. The medical school is attached to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and medical student get to cut a real dead body in the FIRST WEEK! (Not for the faint hearted). It has close links to industry so there are ...

Good for dentistry and medical genetics
Review of Newcastle University by
Gemimathecat
Advantages: Near Scotland, good dentistry and meidical schools
Disadvantages: Very cold, often difficult to understand the accents
Newcastle university has a really good reputation for dentistry and other medically related subjects such as phyisiology and genetics.
It also has a leading research institute for medical genetics. The accomodation is good and many of my friends did actually managed to obtain residence in halls for there full 3 years, though they were a bit institionalised by the end of it. Most halls also offer food with accomodation for those to lazy to cook. Newcastle ...

looked great
Review of Newcastle University by
ey_up
Advantages: in the city center
Disadvantages: in the city center
i only been for a couple of open days and so far i think its great. its my first choice. i hope to go soon. the people are great and the city has a really friendly atmosphere. also st james' park is right on the doorstep - good for football. the downside i think is the lack of big sporting areas in the city. i been told most are on the edges so this would be a drag. its rates highly on the leagues aswell and esp the business school is well known. ...

Can you put up with Geordies
Review of Newcastle University by
whoareyou5
Advantages: Very popular
Disadvantages: Cold, and has Geordies
...had to go up to Newcastle for an interview for Medical School. It was the most hostile atmosphere I have ever been in, but thats just the interview panel (I think). Newcastle had been my first choice Uni for ages, and I had been up there about 6 or 7 times, to the city, Uni, and just all over the place. It is a very popular Uni, but obviously the courses vary, and Id on't know much about those, however it has an excellent reputation for Medicine, ...

Post grad Sociology Don't go there
Review of Newcastle University by
pgjane
Advantages: Cheap drink
Disadvantages: Bad teaching, rubish resources, staff not interested
...and was told there that Newcastle was in trouble and I was right to get out. Apparently sociology is not rated in the discipline and this matters if you are a post grad.
You can check this for yourself - ask who is actually active in sociology - this is very different from names on web pages - some of those people have left
Also ask yourself what is the profile of these people? Compare to other depts and it come out very shallow ...

Big f**king Geordies
Review of Newcastle University by
bim
Advantages: Booze, Booze, Booze!!!!!!
Disadvantages: Fat-ass Geordies
...finishing my first year at Newcastle University, I've learnt lots about my course, but more about how to get drunk quickly, and how not to get into a fight with the locals. The locals are great people, and always up for a laugh. The thing is that they often get off their faces, and if you head off to the wrong pub, you could get a beating. If I were you I'd try and steer clear of the Bigg Market on football days, as they tend to start their drinking ...
