Advantages: I'm not going to die of a horrible smoking-related disease Disadvantages: Whatever happened to living dangerously?
OK, here I go , at it again, for the 2nd time, if you've been here long enough you'll know I promised to give up smoking in the New Year with Nicotine CQ, after 3 weeks of numb arms and vivid dreams I went back to the evil weed.
Then last week I though 'bugger it, I've got to give up some time, may as well be now', dragged the other half into Boots, pondered over the products available and decided on the Nicotinell patches. They also do the gum ... ...know I'll end up completely hooked on it and soon I'll be on 40-50 bits of gum a day! Of course Nicotinell was more appealing because Boots were doing a special offer on it. How do Boots make any profit, they seem to be giving things away all the time. This time is a 'buy one, get one half price' offer. Its usually about £15 each but this way its approx £23 for a fortnights worth.
One thing I've always noticed about smokers it that they always moan ...

Advantages: The theory is good Disadvantages: I never even got onto the weeker ones, the withdrawal symptoms were too bad
MY STORY:
I was a smoker from the age of 12 after I got into the wrong crowd at school. This was rather unfortunate as I ended up getting addicted whilst trying to be popular, only to realise that being popular wasnt all that great, and being addicted was even worse. I went from a ciggy at break with my mate to nearly 20 a day. I was still on 20 a day 5 years later when aged 17 I began to really feel the affects on my lungs. I began coughing up ... ...was finding it harder and harder to breathe when doing any form of excerise, and as a main player in the school football team this wasnt a good thing. I decided to try to end my suffering by attacking the cause. I wanted to quit smoking.
THE IDEA OF THE PATCH:
The nicotine patch is designed to help those who want to quit smoking by providing them with nicotine through another source. There are now many products available although many are more ...

Advantages: I've quit! Disadvantages: Slightly itchy, and whatever you do, don't fall asleep with one on!
I started smoking when I was 14, I started smoking "properly" when I was 15, and at 19, when smoking 20 a day, I decided it was high time that I quit. For good! I had tried many times before using will power alone, and obviously that hadn't worked. I also tried the gum, by another company, which was horrid and too much to think about, whilst giving me a sore throat. So I set a quit date of Sunday 19th February-I figured it would be too much pressure ... ...much planned for the following few weeks.
I got my patches on prescription from my doctor, which I would recommend. It works out a lot cheaper, as you pay a regular prescription price for every set of patches you receive, rather than £17.00 per pack of 7 patches. This is pricey, but a typical 20 a day smoker pays £35 a week on smokes, its just paying it all in one go that makes it seem like a shock!
The 15mg patches are huge, but just look like ...

...question, and showed me the Nicorette 16 hour patch. This gets around the disturbed sleep problem, as you don't wear it when you go to sleep. The programme has three stages, represented by the three levels of patch strengths: Step One - 15mg (full strength) is about breaking your smoking habit. ...stained I decided to give Nicorette patches a go.
Before I started the course I consulted my Doctor as I have a history of heart disease in my family and was assured that not only was it safe to do so but advisable. He was also able to give me the number for a support group which I'm sure are very helpful but I didn't need.
Armed with this knowledge i took a trip to my local chemist and purchased an 8 week course of 15mg not cheap at £17.00 a packet ... ...money we'll save on painting the woodwork back to white.
Having woke up with a sore throat the next morning, must of been the 20 fags I Binged on the previous night I opened the packet and stuck one on my upper arm under the misconseption that I would feel fit and healthy and not crave a cigarette.I can assure you this doesn't happen but after what they cost I was determined to give it a go.
The difference was they did actually take the edge of ...

Advantages: Take the edge out of the gasping Disadvantages: Very dear to buy
...against this and recommended the Nicorette Patches. So I gave them a go, thinking I would be smoking again in no time.
To my surprise, I found it very easy and I am now entering my sixth week as a non-smoker. These things really work, they totally take away the urge to smoke and I no longer find myself gasping for a ciggie. They really take the edge off giving up and that gasping feeling is non-existent, as before if I had even tried cutting down ... ...wanted to pack in.
Nicorette patches come in 3 strengths, and my doctor first put me on the strongest that is 15mg for 2 weeks, then the medium that is 10 mg for 2 weeks and now I am down to the mildest patch that is 5 mg and in a week or so, I will be taken off them for good.
They work by releasing pure Nicotene into your bloodstream, which in turn takes away your desire for ciggies, the only thing they don’t help you with, is having something ...

Advantages: more money, you smell better, Disadvantages: skin reaction on some people
I tried these patches back at the beginning of last year as I was determined to stop smoking. They were a complete waste of money.
I had it firmly in my head that if I bought a packet of patches at £14.95 I wouldn't be able to afford to buy cigarettes too, so I wouls have to stick by my committment to stop. Psychologically I felt quite adjusted to the idea.
However, on the first day I got little blisters round the edge of the patch and I had difficulty ... ...but the second day I really struggled. I felt so ill that I gave up and bought some cigarettes. So that was that, another failed attempt at stopping.
However, I did want to stop so I went to a 'stop smoking counsellor' who recommended Zyban tablets (only available on prescription from your GP) with patches as a back up since I was a very heavy smoker. (50 a day!) I had read a lot of adverse stuff about Zyban but there are a lot of adverse effects ...

so a few days ago i decided to have my last cigarette. it was a glorious day and i stepped outside, sat under a tree and smoked my last ever smoke. i was slightly dissapointed that my last smoke had to be a pall mall, but i enjoyed it all the same. i got a packet of seven full strength, 24hr patches thinking that after this week i would be fine and i wouldnt need them anymore. the price pissed me off at $32, i only spend half that on cigarettes a ... ...the first day i didnt use the patches because i wanted to wait untill the next day before i put one on.thinking i could go a day without a smoke easy. so i woke up early the next day after a troubled nights sleep of craving a smoke. had a shower and put one of those bad boys on. all was going fine for about ten minutes. untill it started to itch . . . . .. now this is no ordinary itch, this is the sort of itch that makes you want to smoke. Advantages: Helps many people overcome their smoking habits Disadvantages: Lost stickyness at times, uncomfortable to wear.
The problem with smoking is that it not only affects us physically, but also mentally. In my opinion it is the mental addiction that needs to be addressed more so than the physical aspects.
Nicotine. Does anyone actually know how addictive this drug is? Could it be that the mind is more addicted to having you holding a cigarette at the bus stop, or at those times when you feel fidgety, awkward or annoyed?
I have been smoking for about 4 years now ... ...several times. When trying the patches I did not notice any real difference in my smoking behaviour - I still needed a quick smoke on the way to work, etc.
I've basically come to the conclusion that although your body is addicted to the nicotine (and patches may help some people) - the mind should not be overlooked when hoping to quit this habit.
I found the patches uncomfortable and not very helpful for those people who run or do other excercise ...

Advantages: took the edge off the cravings Disadvantages: as expensive as cigarettes
After having smoked for about 12 years, I got to the age of 30 and decided enough was enough. I am not sure why I started smoking in the first place, I have never like the smell or particulary the image but always find myself craving another fag and making sure I have my next packet ready!
After a couple of attempts which only lasted at longest 3 weeks, I decided to try patches, having already tried gum, inhaler, tablets etc!
The patch was rather ... ...my upper arm, only to find once I was dresses it could be seen through my white shirt! so after repositioning it I was off. The patch initally gave a degree of iritation, an urge to scratch lasted for the first couple of weeks. The patches also left a rather unsightly sticky residue when they were removed which did prove rather difficult to remove at times. I tended to experience rather strange dreams as a result of the patches & could often be found ...

Quick review of Nicorette Nicotine Patches Full Strength
After smoking since I was 16 (more than 20 years) I was getting fed up ith numerous attempts at quitting.
As myself and my partner both smoke and have just bought a house, we decided that it would be a smoke free zone!!! The idea was great but I never thought about how I was going to do it.
I went to my local GP and she prescribed me Nicorette 15mg.
It's only been 4 days now since I've started wearing them but I haven't had a puff, only a few slight cravings which quickly passed.
I am experiencing headaches & dizziness but I guess it's all part of the process. It'll be worth it in the end!!!!
Wish me luck and good luck to you all. ...

Advantages: They do help reduce withdrawal Disadvantages: They are fiddly to apply, expensive
I'm wearing a Nicotinell patch now, as I'm currently trying to give up a 30 a day habit. Of course the patches are expensive: about £20 a pack, but cheaper in the long-run than smoking.
I put my first patch on the night before my first smokeless day, so that I would have nicotine already in my body for the first, worst morning. The patch really helped me get through the first morning, although it was not easy. Over the next few days it got worse, ... ...I'm pretty sure I couldn't have even got through the first morning without the patches. All the same, the annoying thing about them is that you have to press them down for 20 seconds to make them stick. This would be alright if it worked! I almost invariably find that the patch is peeling or slipping after a while, and I have now started sticking them to my body with masking tape!! It sounds silly but its the only way to keep them on. Apart from ...
