Advantages: Detailed Photos Disadvantages: Small Screen
The Nikon Coolpix 4300 is the first ever digital camera I bought. At the time I bought the camera I wanted it to be able to take decent photos in all sorts of different light conditions and different situations.
I was very impressed with this camera when I first bought it as I found that inside the box there wasn't just a camera, there was various different photo programs that came with the camera as well as a few different leads such as a USB cable ... ...a memory card. Unfortunately the Nikon Coolpix 4300 does not come with a memory card but that is alright nowadays as you can get large memory cards for as little as £10 if you shop around.
One of the discs in the box is Nikon's own software, this is very useful and one of it's best features is that every time you put images on the computer they are put in separate files so the images don't get muddled up with another set of images. Another piece ...

...a good piece of glass, Nikon are a lens company above all else, so they can be trusted to produce excellent lenses. The lens contributes as much, if not more, to image quality than the MP number (above a threshold). The Coolpix 4300 exposes images well and actually takes surprisingly good quality images. To illustrate this, please take a look at the totally unedited pictures I have uploaded that were taken on my holiday to Thailand. I have included ... ...=== Design ===
The Nikon weighs 200g, which is light enough for any bag. The camera looks small enough from the front view, but it is actually quite a lot larger than any of the other compacts in Tesco direct, as it is 2 or 3 times as thick. I actually like this chunky quality makes it a bit more like a SLR to hold, but annoyingly it makes it too wide to fit into my coat pocket. The screen on the back is very tiny compared to current standards (only ...

I have to be honest - when I was looking for a digitial camera I was primarily after something that had a good macro facility, but this camera proved to be much more than that!
The camera itself

It is a nice light, compact and easy camera to handle. The battery and Compact Flash slots are easy to access. You will find the camera a nice size to shoot photos with, unless you have large hands or thick fingers. The majority ... ...-----------
As I mentioned above - I was primarily after a Digital Camera that had a good macro facility. This one did not dissappoint - as I will go onto below. What I like about this camera though are the 10 or so settings built in that enable quick and efficient change to Night photo, landscape view, macro, portrait etc... Lots of the type of settings that all general camera users would find useful. All are set using the view on the LCD panel. ...

...to wide-angle lenses. But the Nikon 4300 was, and it happened to be on a special sale from the factory - so I bought it directly from Nikon. There was a shortage of the wide-angle lenses, so it took a few weeks to track one down, but I did find one. I bought this camera as my old and trusty Kodak died on me shortly after my daughters wedding and just before I was due to go on holiday to Greece.
I looked around as I always do and had originally settled for a Pentax but when I tried it in the shop it was so small I felt I would drop it too easily so turned to a larger camera. I am delighted with the grip on this camera as it feels really secure and is easy to hold steady.
I really wish I'd bought ... ...my old Kodak look very sad compared to the quality I am getting with this one.
I found it at a good price from Pixmania as this was over a year ago and paid £280 for it though it is cheaper now.
I do think the instructions could have been clearer as I took some time to work out the functions even with the handbook.
Once mastered though this camera takes some beating in the 4 MP range as it has the ability to use other lenses which is not common ...

...shops we decided on the Nikon as a)it seemed to offer everything we were looking for and b) it had £50 off (we paid £250 back in December 03 I think you could probably pick it up cheaper now).
As a point and shoot camera I am delighted, the photographs are crisp and clear and it seems to cope well in all different lighting situations. I also use this camera in a school setting and it copes admirably with the bashing and not so gentle handling it gets at the hands of my class of four and five year olds

The Nikon Coolpix was my first digital camera. Having only used expensive and heavy SLR cameras for photography in the past, I was surprised at the picture quality achieved by this compact digital.
