Advantages: Superb value for money and great quality and close range Disadvantages: Long range quality can be slightly poor
I bought my Nikon Coolpix 775 in January of 2003 just after my daughter was born, so I could take plenty of pictures of her as she grows up. Back in those days the camera had a high street price of nearly £300 but by the power of the internet I got it for just under £200. I believe you can now get the same model for even less, around £170 making this one of the cheaper models, especially when you take into account that Nikon is a fairly respected ... ...to go and comprehensive instructions.
Memory card – It’s an 8MB card which is just about sufficient to start with, you can get 8 pictures in high res mode, 16 in medium and 32 in low res mode. That’s according to the manual but I find in medium res mode I get 20 photos on one card. Medium res mode looks fine to me for everyday use, low res is slightly too poor if you want to print the pictures out.
Battery – The rechargeable battery which comes ...

Advantages: Compact, light, good picture quality Disadvantages: Easy to switch on by mistake, have to carry separate charger
The Nikon Coolpix 775 is my third digital camera to date, and the best of the bunch. Previously I had a Largan Chameleon (very basic VGA capability), and a Minolta Dimage 2300 (reasonable picture quality, but heavy and no optical zoom). I upgraded to the Nikon when I needed something compact, with good picture quality, and an optical zoom. The Nikon hasn't let me down in any respect. It has a 2mp CCD, which is slightly less pixels for your money ... ...not paying extra for the Nikon bag, choose your camera pouch carefully. A neck strap would also have been more useful than the wrist strap.
Overall, a great purchase, and a very versatile camera for the money. It's widely available from photography specialists, electrical retailers, and online, with prices ranging from £270 to £315. Update December 2003: You will still find this camera available new in a few stores, but the price has fallen to around ...

...present he really wanted. The Nikon Coolpix 775 is getting on a bit now, being over a year since it was first 'released'. So while it cost about £300 back then, dad was able to pick this up at 'almost' new from a well-respected local photography/lens shop for £120.
That might seem to be a lot of money to spend on what was effectively a second hand camera, but it was completely unblemished and came in the original packaging. The only thing that was ... ...presto. The battery is a Nikon EN-EL1 Lithium Ion Battery Pack 7.4v 680mAh.
-- Straps, case and leads --
The camera comes with a wrist strap, and a leather case. A USB lead is provided for connecting the camera to your PC, while another type (sorry dont know the name) for connecting it directly to your television - great for when the non-technical (grand)parents are round.
-- Memory card --
The camera usually comes with a 8mb card, which really ...

This is an excellent digital camera that i would really recomended if you are looking to get into digital photography. The great thing about a digital camera is after your intial outlay your overall cost of processing is drastically cut. No more wasted photos as you just delete the one you dislike. It's worth buying a second battery for your hols as it saves taking the charger and leaving you short. You can Buy disposeable batterys but they are £7 a throw and rechargable is a bout £20 or less.

...on the cute, compact, idiot-proof, Nikon 775. What a dream come true - it was relatively inexpensive for a digital, gave the same quality as a standard camera, and it reassuringly simple to use. However, if you are more technologically recondite than me, there are a number of modes, including landscape, dim lighting (good for the clubbing nights, and one especially for glittering beaches and snowscapes. Perfect. It runs on a rechargable battery, ... ...one, as they do take a while to charge up fully. It is also EXTREMELY robust, as I found out when I dropped it from the back of an elephant and although it bounced rather alarmingly, was completely unaffected. Any camera that can do that gets 10/10 in my book. It is also compact without the buttons being about the size of pinheads, and very lightweight. I'll never go back to accidentally exposing a film and ruining all the pictures, or finding out ...

Advantages: Small, Nice looking, good quality Disadvantages: Not great in concerts
I can't really complain about this camera because my mum gave it to me when she bought a new one. So i didn't even pay for it. But i have one complaint about this camera. I originally wanted a camera for listing my bits and bobs on ebay. Then i decided to go to one or two concerts last year. This is were i had the problems.
I came to use the camera at the first concert i went to and every picture i took was really dark and fuzzy. I tried the numerous ... ...would work and none did. The actual setting that is for concerts just made the picture blurd. the next concert i tried again and ended up with the same problem also i was further back this time and needed to use the zoom which i must say is excellent but it made the picture worse.
This has to be the only problem that i have with this camera. It is small and light. It has an amazing zoom range of 1:2.8 - 4.9. It has 7 different settings for differnet ...

The 775 is now no longer available new so if you want one it will be second hand. The Amazon web site has them for sale starting from £70, although this sounds a little on the steep side to me.
Ebay would probably be a better choice, where you might expect to pay £40-60 for one in the original packaging etc.

Advantages: Cheap and affordable introduction to digital photography Disadvantages: Too much to carry along, addtional flash memo expensive
...So in addition to my Nikon 35mm camera, I got a digital Nikon too.
The carrying case is real bulky, since you have to carry a seperate (and quite large) charger along. Also you need to carry along spare flash memo cards so you may take snapshots whenever the baby does something. For just an example, our baby girl is only 19 mo. old and we have some 1,600 pictures of her in digi media, some 300 in hardprint, not to mention her video coverage.
The ... ...usually offset, unlike my reflex Nikon 35mm which is essentially a WYSIWYG camera.
Batteries are durable and very quick to recharge. I hardly ever use my spare battery and I can now see that I actually paid an unnecessary amount for that.
Flash memoes are expensive. I bought an EOM 128MB for almost the price of the cam itself. The standard (stock) 8MB is too low. They could have included a 16MB instead regarding the price you pay to buy it.
At ...

well what a great cam.
it has a zoom function which is good but great, just when you want to go that little bit closer it will stop, i suppose it isnt a problem but would be ideal if it could go that little bit further.

...or a card reader with Nikon View 4 which comes on a cd. It's also possible to earmark the photos you want to transfer on the camera, and it's done automatically when you connect it to the computer. Included on the disc is FotoStation Easy which is a useful image database program.
Thus far I've taken photos at the medium (normal) setting and the prints compare favourably with ones from any "normal" camera. I even printed one out to A4 size by mistake ... ...shot.
The Nikon uses Compact Flash memory cards ... they feel a lot more robust than the Smart Media used by the Ricoh. It comes with only an 8Mb memory card which is maybe a little stingy when they are so cheap now. However, it's enough to get you started, and get you hooked on the fun of digital photography.
I use 64 Mb cards and at the medium setting I can take about 150 pictures per card.

Advantages: this camera can easily be used by anyone Disadvantages: a bit quick to switch itself off to save battery life
I bought my Nikon Coolpix 775 second-hand from Ebay, just to take pictures of things to sell, and did not realise how easily I would take to it. I have had it two years now and its very difficult to find fault with it.
The case is smooth and small enough to fit in my small hands easily, it has a sensible manual that comes with it, along with a leather case to prevent damage. I can change the battery, and memory card with little effort. I am useless ... ...tuition, and got up and running with it very quickly. It may have many fine features, but i will never get round to finding out what they are, as I just do the basics. I have let the grandchildren get their hands on it, and its survived.
The only snag is that it switches itself off a bit quick for my liking, ...

...on to my children. The Nikon is so light in weight, even though it looks plastic, it definitely is not. The battery lasts a long time, unlike other 2 Mega pixel cameras. The supplied compact flash card is tiny (8Mb), but replacement cards from Sandisk, FUJI and others are now relatively cheap. I would recommend a 128Mb card to get 132 pics at high resolution. Also there is the added advantage of silent movie capture as well.

...When I bought my Nikon Coolpix 775 last year (Jan '03), I didn't expect too much off it. I just wanted 'a little' something to take pictures and that was simply it. But what I discovered once I started using my camera was that how easy it was to use (for a novice like moi) & how quick it was to transfer my pics to my PC. I was well & truly impressed. The quality of the pictures were great too. The fact that it was quite lightweight & stylish was ... ...as well. The only disadvantage I have found is that the movie clips does not come out well indoors ( at nighttime even with the lights on) and the fact that it has no sound. I have experimented with the different modes & got obsessed with taking pictures of my baby. I have millions of quality pictures stored away in CDs. My friends have often ...
