Advantages: Quality Pictures, Easy to use, Compact Disadvantages: Price but still worth it for a decent camera
** Nikon D40x Digital SLR **
This is my first digital SLR camera I really like taking pictures of mainly our families dogs and cars my main hobbies, my other half had previously had been using a digital SLR that belonged to his dad, so we both went a long to Jessops that is well know for selling really good photography stuff.
We had a look at various models of camera including the Canon Eos 400d which is one of this cameras biggest rival models, ... ...we started looking at the Nikon D40x my other half knew someone who had the previous model to this the Nikon D40 which had been really good, the other half had used it previously and found it a really good quality camera. So after a lot of really useful and helpful advice from the shop assistant in Jessops we chose the Nikon D40x it had everything we wanted including a sport mode which was the main feature I wanted, as border collies don't keep still ...

...though the Canon 400d and Nikon D40x did seem to be the market leaders. I then found that the K100d had been superceded by the K100d Super and the price had gone up closer to the canon and Nikon.
I spotted an offer at Currys of a Nikon D40x with 18-55mm lense for £405 plus a 55-300mm nikon lense for an extra £30 and on top of that buy now (with no deposit) pay next september. I couldn't resist. I am glad the offer came around because in the end ... ...System
I have had the Nikon now for a couple of weeks and I am very pleased with what I have got. Some reviews say that the D40X relies to heavily on Menus. I know this is my first DSLR, but I have not found that to be a problem. One press of an info key and all the relevant settings are displayed on the LCD, another press and it is then possible to change the settings. It is also possible to see graphically on the info screen the size of the aperture. ...

Advantages: Compact for an SLR, easy to use, excellent picture quality. Disadvantages: Battery life only allows 1000ish photos to be taken
My review is about the Nikon D40x Digital Single Lense Reflex camera.
For the last 3 years i've been taking photographs using my dad Konika Minolta Dynax 5D, but as of a few months ago i've moved in with my other half and no longer have access to my dads camera, so before christmas it was decided that we needed our own digital SLR.
I'd got a couple of models in mind, the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40, they both did what I wanted of them and ... ...thats when I spotted the Nikon D40x, it hadn't come up in my searches on the internet and turned out that it was a better version of the D40 and had a 10mp CCD instead of just 6mp.
I had a play with the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40x and decided that the D40x was a far nicer camera to hold and use and wasn't much more expensive (only about £20).
Whilst I was in the store I decided it worthwhile (being as they would also work out cheapers) to ...

Advantages: Excellent image quality and build Disadvantages: Average value for money, limited choice of lenses
...motor, the camera only takes Nikon AF-S lenses, which have a motor built in. The standard lens is an excellent starting point, but if you want to expand your collection a sensible choice would be the Nikon AF-S 55-200 VR lens, which will allow you to zoom in more on your subject.
The 10MP sensor coupled with a high quality lens ensures great photo quality. The camera offers 10 modes. A beginner should start with the Auto mode, where the camera decides ... ...are several creative modes, which largely change how the image is processed. Then come the manual modes, which offer enthusiasts more control.
The D40x is an excellent option for first time DSLR buyers who want a camera that will grow as they grow as photographers. I would highly reccomend it, but if you cannot afford it would also reccomend the D40, a similar camera. ...

I bought the Nikon "kit" which comprised the body, an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens all for less than £500 which I reckon was a good deal. There are still plently retailers that will only let you have the body and one lens for this much.
My only complaint is the lack of choice as far as lenses are concerned.
Basically to get full functionality with this camera you have to use the Nikon DX range which at present is fairly limited / ...

...down to 2 choices, the nikon d40x and the canon 400d. these are both brilliant cameras for their price but the nikon performs slightly better in my opinion and is about £30 cheaper. if you are comparing this to the earlier d40 i would highly recommend paying the extra money for this as the extra 4 mega pixels will be vital if you are planning on enlarging your photos to anything bigger than a3. the optical quality of the 18-55mm kit lens is outstanding ... ...which produces slightly soft images when enlarged to bigger than a4. Advantages: Incredible quality, infininate features, decent price Disadvantages: not as easy to transport as a compact.
The Nikon D40x is a must have for all budding photographers! My favourite hobby is photography and I am also a digital media student, and therefore the photography equipment I buy is very important to me.
I have owned this product now for ten months and I never leave home without it! Nikky, as she is know to me (sad I know!), goes everywhere with me, shooting many different scenes.

The Nikon D40x comes with a rechargeable battery, which simply slots into the supplied charger and charges by the main. They also come with a neck strap, to avoid the fear of dropping. The main disadvantage that some people may find with this product is the size and weight. It certainly isn't as easy to transport as a compact digital camera, which can fit into a handbag or even a back pocket. This may put some ...

...Old Lens for his Film Nikon SLR and they fit also (but don’t automatic focus). What a great way of using old camera lens’s that you may have.
The battery life is excellent, it only takes about 90 minutes to fully charge the battery. I haven’t tested and noted how many photo’s it will take on the battery but have in the past taken 200 ++ photos some with flash and viewed the photo’s on the screen with the battery life still looking ok. Advantages: Helpful menu system Disadvantages: No Preview
...once I began using this Nikon D40X. Even my father wants to use it now, and he's got a few camera's himself.
For those who may have expected it, don't think you will be able to see the picture you want to take through the LCD screen BEFORE you take it. It doesn't display the image until you have taken it... there's me thinking I'm missing a control, or used to using phone camera's... if it's a quirk, then that's about the only one it has.
I bought ... ...well. The manual is not great, but the camera has some great help menu's to gently push you along. Do read up on the camera, it won't take those quality shots without you understanding what each setting is for. It will take those shots though, and is doing so very well for me. For a direction, try looking into the Magic Lantern guide books, they have one specifically for this camera, and I would recommend it.
The camera is slightly heavier than ...

Advantages: Good quality photo, wider view finder, best display Disadvantages: No interface CF, lens look so conventional
Nikon must be continued to compete SLR competition especially with Canon in SLR camera. In this case, Nikon can win in price aspect. SLR D40x is more cheaper than another SLR from Canon or Pentax. Advantages: Light, easy to handle, awesome quality, fast, perfect for new SLR buyers Disadvantages: No AF-engine built in, to simple if you are used to SLRs
This is the first step to become a friend with a digital SLR camera! D40x is very easy to contol and the quality is awesome! You wont notice the difference between a D200 and this one. Especially not if you are a beginnner. It takes 3pics/sec and it is 20% faster than the D40. From OFF to a ready shot the gap is only 0,18sec!
