...suggest a visit to the Nikon website. My review is a personal one - from a camera users point of view.
I am writing this particular review in response to the rather lacklustre offerings that I have read about this particular camera. I really was hoping that my favourite review sites would point me in the correct direction over the choice of my first D-SLR - Digital Single Lens Reflex camera, but sadly, no, that did not turn out to be the case.
... ...not actually even handled a Nikon D50!
I am no expert photographer, I can take as good a shot as the next person, having read quite a lot about the subject, maybe my framing techniques are better than average though. As with many other things in life I am a highly critical judge when it comes to a photograph, I know what makes a good shot and what does not. Nine times out of ten, the cost and make of the camera and lens have little importance on ...

...necessarily include a lens. Nikon package this in two options, either bundled with an 18-55mm lens (approximately 3x zoom), or just as a body, in which case you'll need to find a lens. This last option is likely to be popular with owners of Nikon film SLRs, as the lenses are interchangeable.
Also in the box, you'll find a battery and charger, cables for connecting to your computer or TV, various bits of software and a neck strap. A notable omission ... ...it's not turned on. Nikon claim that from flicking this switch to being ready to shoot takes 1/5 of a second; I've not timed it, but I'm not about to argue with them. There's certainly no waiting around as with many compact digitals.
Something which is very different about the D50 compared to a compact camera is that you cannot set up your shot using the screen on the back. This is due to the fundamental design of SLR cameras, you will have to use ...

Advantages: Easy to use, excellent picture quality, built to last, long battery life. Disadvantages: No memory card supplied.
Before I bought my Nikon D50 I was using a point-and-shoot Olympus compact digital camera. I knew my photography was good, but I felt held back by the sluggishness of the point-and-shoot, and the fact that I had almost no control over the photographs that I was taking. My son was eighteen months old by this point and wouldn't sit still long enough for the camera to start, focus and take the photograph, with a horrible slow shutter speed which left ... ...shooting with a D100 and later a D200, and had nothing but praise for Nikon's DSLR range of cameras and top-quality glass. While I was researching DSLR cameras prior to my upgrade, he suggested I try one of Nikon's entry-level DSLR cameras. I chose the D50 because it was reasonably priced and came with the 18-55mm kit lens, which is an excellent piece of kit for the price.

Advantages: Great Optics, Light, Easy to Use, Long Battery life Disadvantages: Only 6.1 mega pixels instead of 8+
I bought my Nikon D50 a year ago and have had time to get to know it. Previously I had used a standard 35mm Nikon SLR which I have owned for 20 years so I was not a willing convert to 'digital', now I am! I chose the Nikon as the lenses I already possessed were interchangeble (remember focal length must be multiplied by 1.4 to give the digital equivalent). The first thing I noticed was how light it was compared to my old SLR. As a result I've tended ... ...the package over my older heavier lenses. The camera is simple to use and it is tempting to leave it on auto (4 auto settings - fully auto, programmed, aperture priority and shutter priority). I am only now beginning to explore the manual possibilities. The battery life is excellent and I can get through a 2 week holiday with some 150 photos without a recharge (like most from the old 35mm regime I tend to be frugal with my shots!) - the charger gets ...

...owned an 'old school' traditional Nikon SLR (E Series), and had very much enjoyed using it, however found it costly having films developed (especially since I like to play with black and white photography). The camera arrived well packaged, with a range of extra bits - plug adapters, a charger, USB cable, tv cable, camera strap etc, and a decent sized manual which I tend to carry around in my camera bag (just in case!). To assemble the lense onto ... ...Also note that the lense comes with a lense cap (phew!). I haven't quite made my way through the manual, or through working out what each option in the menu, or on the interface/control system of the camera actually does. In this respect, it is a camera for professionals. Regardless, without this knowledge, it is still terribly easy to take very professional shots which encourage you to learn more about the camera. Thus, highly recommended for beginners. ...

...colleague recommended me to the Nikon - I had also considered the Canon 350 - and when I tried the two back to back in Jessops, the Nikon just felt right. If you have small hands, the Canon might be for you. Having used it for a few weeks, it certainly meets and exceed what I hoped to achieve with it.

The Sigma is a bonus ... ...a very good image throughout the zoom range and, with the aid of a tripod, will hopefully give me some excellent aircraft shots at Farnborugh this year. For those really long shots, a tripod is an essential and I have laso bought the infra red remote to minimise shake to the minimum/

What a fantastic camera. Does not matter if you are a novice or a professional this camera will give you stunning pictures times afer time and rivals cameras that cost a huge amount more. Easy to use and not too heavy you can not fail to get that stunning picture that you thought only a professional could get. As good as the D70 if not better in my opinion. ...into the other modes the Nikon had available. To make any senses I had to delve into the manual. But the read was worth it. I even purchased "DSLR for Dummies!" Very helpful and now I'm on the way to becoming an ok amateur photographer! Check out www.waynehackman.com for some of my shots!

Good things:
-Battery life amazing! (Even better if you switch the screen off)
-Very fast at taking a shot! No waiting for the camera to think about what it's shooting! -Takes SD cards
- Camera has a fully automatic mode that is better then most compact digitals.

Advantages: Can be used as an SLR and a basic point and shoot Camera Disadvantages: Need photoshop software to change the colour of the photo
I brought the Nikon D50 because I wanted to learn how to use an SLR camera, while also being able to just point and shoot when I didn't have the time to concentrate on setting up the shot. This camera is excellent at both. It produces high quality photographs in both situations - I regualrly use pictures I have taken with this camera as backgrounds on my 19 inch computer screen and the picture quality remains excellent - no fuzzy dots!

Advantages: Incredibly easy to use. Disadvantages: On some modes the camera chooses some strange settings.
The Nikon D50 is a fantastic camera! I strarted doing photography a year ago now, I started out with a manual SLR but had persistent problems. The Nikon D50 is a beautifully looking piece of kit (especially in sliver, which I paid an extra £5 for) which feels perfectly weight in the hand (As do most SLR's). If you are a past user of Nikon camera's you will be at home with the size and shape of the D50.
